trunkmaker@gmail.com - 23 May 2007 16:12 GMT Diagnosed with hep c about 2 months ago. Had a liver biopsy 5-21-07. Waiting on my results & have no idea what to expect. This waiting game is tough. My wife is being very supportive which helps alot. She has tested negative for which I am most greatful. I'm at the point where I'm not sure I want to live with this disease & become more of a drain on my family. I haven't touched alcohol since I was diagnosed & b4 that I drank alot. Thanks for listening.

Sorry you're one of the group, glad you found the group :-)
So, what prompted you to seek a diagnosis? And how long do you suspect you've been living with HCV?
To my knowledge, there hasn't been one person posting here who infected their spouse through sexual activities. I suspect it's actually quite difficult to transmit HCV in that manner, and that the statistics that report that means are overstated due to patients who are less than honest and doctors that just want to get on to the next patient.
Cheers, and good luck with the biopsy. Hopefully you'll score very low...

I was a heavy drinker too, quitting the whiskey and beer was a bitch but well worth it. I was diagnosed in 2000, didn't quit drinking cold turkey tapered off. I am guessing you may have fatigue and anxiety attacks like I did. I took the natural route after completely getting off the booze 5 years ago, ate healthy for my liver and managed to get my enzyme levels down. The anxiety attacks subsided and the milk thistle got my enzyme levels to almost normal. About 9 months ago the HEP C came back, it was slow, I felt like I had the flu sometimes and it would last a day or 2 and then subside. The flu-like symptoms started to become more frequent and last for longer periods of time. In February I started the TX, been almost 4 months now and DR says enzyme levels are normal. 2 months and the check the SVR to see if the response to the therapy is good. If you are/were a drinker I would recommend eating a liver healthy diet for 6 - 12 months before therapy for 2 reasons. 1. You don't want to start TX while kicking the booze, you can try but I decided it was too much for me to take on all at once. 2.If you abstain from booze and eat healthy your liver will actually thank you for it and I feel you will be better prepared for the TX.

Here's the good news: if you can rid yourself of the virus, there's a decent chance your diabetes may be eased as well.
I was also infected in the '70s, didn't get the Hep C label until the mid-80s, put off treatment until a couple of year ago, did the 48 week combo regimen and got the SVR.
Cheers

Yep, the waiting is tough after that initial shock of finding out you have a nasty disease. But most of us get over it and it doesn't have to mean that you will be a drain on your family. For me, it is mostly a thing of the past as my treatment was successful like many others here. Don't let it get you down too much. You've done the right thing in getting tested to see where you stand and from there you can make some decisions. Good luck with the tests.

2.If you abstain from booze and eat healthy your liver will actually thank you for it and I feel you will be better prepared for the TX.

dBo - 23 May 2007 22:40 GMT Jeez it seems like only yesterday I was you -actually it was Nov 05 - sitting wiaiting for the biopsy after the shock of "I've got WHAT?..." ;)
Welcome aboard The Mystery Ship. Sorry you have to be here as well. You must have tons of questions, I sure did. Start doing your research and getting your facts together while you await The Facts of your situaition. You may have to make some big decisions. Hoping the results of the biopsy comes back with good results.
Assuming you've had bloodwork etc and that is what prompted the biopsy, confirmation of the presence of Hep C - when you can share more information and details, folks will have a better idea of what information you might be interested in. Good place to be - lots of good advice, information and especially EXPERIENCE. I found way more information here than I got from my Doc, who was ok, but very much a just the Facts Ma'm kinda guy - A Very Busy Person as they say. He was prompt, no nonsense, ecouraging, optimistic, and always always always let mw know the results of any tests as soon as possible, as well as mailing me copies of everything, so I could have it in print once my mind left me on tx....!
Here you can hear from folks who decided not to treat, folks who decided to treat, what threatment was like etc. You can rant you can rave, you can find compassion and even an occasional kick in the a.s when its warranted... haha!
Do you know your genotype or have any idea how long The Dragon has Been hiding in their doing its thing? Now Take a deep breath............

There are though many others who would take those very words today and exchange them for a different behavior many months and years down the raod you are now on.
Good luck on the biopsy!

I drank a couple cases of beer, a gallon of whiskey, wine with dinner, & an occasional scotch weekly. And hepatitis has me scared straight. I would never allow myself to take a drink at this point. Yea I sure do miss liquor, but I also would like to spend a few more years with my family. It is pitiful that it took this to appreciate my wonderful family. But at least maybe now they will remember me as a loving father & husband instead of a funny drunk. I didn't know how much I love the people around me until I sobered up. Now I will spend what time I have left making up for all the hurt & disappointment I caused over the years. I am just thankful they loved me enough to still be in my life. I look back now & I can't understand how they put up with my actions. As far as ever going back to alcohol, I am not going to have time. All my time & energy is going to be spent on my wife & kids. It is not about me anymore it is only about them now.
I wish you good luck & hope all goes well for you.
