My serum ferritin level went from a pre-therapy border-line high of 341ng/ml
to 1190 ng/ml roughly 3 months into treatment. It tailed down from there,
reaching 660 at the end of therapy, then down to a wonderfully normal 198 five
months later. I haven't had another ferritin check since, but I just had my
annual checkup with a full set of blood tests and should soon know where it is
18 months post tx.
I too was concerned about the skyrocketing ferritin, so I had iron
saturation/iron load tests done a month or so after that peak and it was
dead-nuts normal.
I suspect your doctor is putting one and one together and ending up with two.
While high iron load would indeed be a strike against success, serum ferritin
is the wrong thing to look at. In my case, 'sploding RBCs from the Ribavirin
was unleashing vast quantities of ferritin, but my overall iron load was quite
normal, and treatment was successful...

My Ferritin level was 600 when I started TX. Tests at that time indicated I
had 2 of the inherited genes that cause Hemachromatosis, even though at 55
I've never been diagnosed with elevated Ferritin levels before. During TX I
suffered from severe anemia yet my Ferritin level spiked to a high of around
2500 NG/ML during treatment and I needed twice monthly plebotomys to control
it. I've had one plebotomy since completing treatment 18 months ago and
recent BW indicated my Ferritin level was 46 (normal = 20-380 NG-ML) and my
virus level is undetectable after 13 months. I'm no Doctor but at least in
my case a high Ferritin level was apparently NO indication of unsuccessful
treatment.

I have been told .. I cannot understand .. the posters on this
hepatitis newsgroup.
I suppose the posting above .. proves .. that .. fact ..
You say you iron levels / ferritin were HIGH "My Ferritin level was
600 " .. upon .. discovery of your hepatitis .. and they even had to
bloodlet you "twice monthly plebotomys " .. to lower these
**high** .. "Ferritin level spiked to a high of around
2500 NG/ML during treatment and I needed twice monthly plebotomys to
control
it." .. iron levels.
Then you say you are treatment .. "cured" .. "my
virus level is undetectable after 13 months." .. AND your iron levels
are .. NOW .. "low".. "Ferritin level was 46 (normal = 20-380 NG-ML)
"
Then you say .. iron .. "ISN'T .. involved" ..
Now .. admittingly .. I don't .. **understand** .. THAT ..
particular .. conclusion .. ?
You HAD .. high .. you NOW have low .. and "iron isn't involved" ..

Now what do you think .. "high ferritin level / iron was apparently NO
indication of unsuccessful treatment" .. means .. ?
It means he thinks iron isn't .. involved .. BECAUSE .. he considers
himself .. cured .. and then he says he has high iron .. **high** ..
iron .. ?
He has no iron ..
He got rid of the iron .. "My Ferritin level was 600 when I started
TX"
What part of .. "I got rid of the iron by phlebotomy" .. don't you
understand .. ?
"Ferritin level spiked to a high of around 2500 NG/ML during treatment

I needed twice monthly plebotomys to control it."
What .. part .. ?
>> Beware of charlatans that quote dialog that never actually occurred...<<
Seems .. when someone UNDERSTANDS .. **what** .. somebody .. SAYS ..
makes them a .. charlaton to .. you .. ?
Seeing your evident abilities to **understand** .. must leave alot of
charlatons .. around .. you ..
"My iron levels at my treatment .. goal / cure .. are .. low .. "
"Ferritin level was 46 (normal = 20-380 NG-ML)
"
"in my case a high Ferritin level was apparently NO indication of
unsuccessful

Do .. you .. understand .. the stupidity of that .. statement ..
Do .. ya .. ?
"My iron levels at my treatment .. goal / cure .. are .. low .. "
"Ferritin level was 46 (normal = 20-380 NG-ML) ."
"in my case a high Ferritin level was apparently NO indication of

Actually since there is .. no iron LEFT .. that statement .. is
WRONG .. because as a person WITH .. no iron .. 46 / MG-ML .. then
this "high iron" .. doesn't even .. exist .. and so his 'take' .. on
it .. is .. wrong .. because .. ?
He doesn't have any iron to make any judgement CALL .. on .. iron ..
Because he .. ain't .. GOT .. no .. iron ..
Got .. no .. iron ..
He has .. no .. iron ..
No .. iron .. IN .. him ..
You .. **understand** .. ?
Or is it STILL .. too hard for .. ya ..

You got a yes .. or .. no .. answer .. here ..
THAT .. shouldn't be THAT hard for even someone with YOUR ..
limited .. intelligence ..
The poster .. said .. "upon completion of my treatment .. upon my
cure .. my iron levels were NO LONGER .. high .. of .. 600 .. they are
NOW .. 48 .. "
"twice monthly plebotomys"
Yes .. or .. no ..
WERE .. high .. "My Ferritin level was 600 when I started
TX"
LOW .. now .. "recent BW indicated my Ferritin level was 46 (normal =
20-380 NG-ML)
and my
virus level is undetectable after 13 months"
Now which part of .. he has no iron LEFT .. don't you understand .. ?
This seems to be an important .. question .. AND .. it seems to ME ..
you .. are attempting to .. PURPOSELY .. **cloud** .. this ..
issue ..
The issue is .. hepatitis .. treatment / cure .. AND it seems the
poster .. specifically points out the .. FACT .. by lowering of the
iron levels .. or .. more PRECISELY / succinctly .. the INCLUSION ..
of .. lowering the iron levels by phlebotomy / bloodletting to a low
level leads to his .. cure ..
"twice monthly plebotomys"
Now .. there is the word .. cure .. again ..
Now according to the poster .. inclusion of iron reduction therapy IN
his therapy .. led him to .. cure .. **cure** .. c-u-r-e ..
"twice monthly plebotomys"
Now you should be able to figure out some way to .. twist .. THAT into
something .. different ..
That .. means .. unless you are .. REALLY .. stupid .. is ..
"inclusion of phlebotomy in my treatment program led to cure of my
hepatitis" / "I needed twice monthly plebotomys to control it."
I think I will repeat that .. because .. ? .. it said / he said ..
**cure** / "my
virus level is undetectable after 13 months"
C-u-r-e .. by .. inclusion of .. bloodletting .. / phlebotomy ..
"I needed twice monthly plebotomys to control it.""Ferritin level
spiked to a high of around 2500 NG/ML "
"my virus level is undetectable after 13 months" "Ferritin level was
46"
"twice monthly plebotomys"

I'm tempted to enter into this as I've looked at this in the archives (I
KF'ed IJ some time ago) and can see that what I posted has been "adjusted".
All I'm going to say is both myself and my Doctors are in agreement that the
SVR that I've achieved and hopefully can maintain is as a result of tx I
undertook in 2004-2005. I've had this dragon in me since 1973 and it didn't
budge till I took on 48 weeks of the interferon/snakeoil Hell ride. And I've
yet to use the word "cured".

Hi grayhackles and tom.Very encouraging news from both of you about
treatment success and normalized ferritin levels. Thanks john

Hi John
I can't seem to lay my hands on those report right now, but that was
my experience as well. Ferritin was really elevated upon diagnosis
back in Fall of 2005, and my dr ordered testing for hemachromatosis.
It did not stop me from having postive results from treatment either.
At 6 months post tx, I am still virus free. GOOD LUCK !! :)
