I've had a biggish gallstone (14mm) for about seven years and I was
wondering if anyone here has tried that treatment where the stone is
dissolved. I don't want to have surgery and the doc says that if it isn't
causing trouble then leave it alone. Sounds ok, but today during the
ultrasound he said my liver was a bit swollen but that it was probably
nothing to worry about and may be due to aggravation by the gallstone. Well,
if the stone can cause swelling I'd like it out if it's just a matter of
taking drugs that dissolve it. Anyone tried this? Does it actually work?

I have a gallstone also. As a matter of fact, Hep C can be a cause of
gallstones forming. They told me the same thing that they dont want to
do anything if its not bothering me.

As far as I know, there are no drugs to dissolve stones. Surgery is
the only way. My BCLD also advised me to eat a low fat diet and that
will help.

I am taking milkthistle in part to try to encourage the production of bile
which can dislodge small stones, (I am hoping)  I was diagnosed with the
beginnings of gallstones by ultrasound when my liver was first scanned
pre-biopsy a few years ago.

I have no symptoms of gall stones.

I have multiple mobile gallstones as well. mine are symptomatic ie. -Pain. I
have been waiting until after my HCV treament before I can have the surgery
to remove it.
There is a pill (urso forte) that is basically bile acid that can over time
dissolve the gallstone(s). However, if the stones are "calcified" they are
useless. Also, there is an endoscopic procedure that can for some use sonic
waves to breakup the stones so they pass through the common bile duct and be
expelled from the body.
Depending on the type, size, and location of your stone(s) your Dr. has
these options as alternatine to a cholecystectomy.
