never cured?

I went to see an ophthalmologist today to see if I could get contact lenses.
I've had to wear glasses since my eyesight deteriorated during my second tx
a couple of years ago. He said that contacts were not a good idea for me
because of my age (50) and because my correction is only slight. He also
said that having hep c is a reason not to have contacts. I know the eyes can
get a bit dry during tx but I always thought that that was just a side and
would not be a permanent problem. So, I asked him, what about if I'm cured
of hep C and what he said is the reason I'm writing today. He said that we
are never cured of hep C. What an arsehole. I said, but we can be
non-detectable for the virus long after treatment. Yes he said, but you
would still have antibodies and some hep C symptoms. Well, sh.t, I'm
probably full of antibodies (I didn't say this bit) like measles and mumps
and but no one ever says that these are incurable. The guy obviously doesn't
know what he's talking about. If there was any virus there at all (my
definition of having hep C) it would quickly grow back to measurable
quantities after tx I think. We see it do that often enough. I wish doctors
wouldn't say the first silly thing that comes into their heads. I'm not
going back to this guy. He clearly doesn't know his arse from his elbow.

By the way, anybody here wear contacts after hep C?

Well  Jack , I've had HCV and HBV antibodies for about 40 years ( that is I
tested positive for the antibodies ).  But , no live virus was detected.
The doctor said that , like many other incurable viruses ,  HIV can remain
hidden ( probably in nerve fibers ) for years undetectable.  To know for
sure that you were "cured" would take years without  antibody detection.  I
am not sure if that has ever happened.

You wandered around a bit there - was the "HIV" a typo? because it pretty much
renders that last sentence meaningless around ex-heppers - as does "antibody
detection" - again, we're looking for virions, not leftovers from an immune
system battle from years past.

There have been plenty of studies that show how durable an SVR can be, some
studies are well beyond 5 years running.

HCV can be cured.

I've HepC, and I wear contacts. Not sure if you meant after treatment
(which I haven't had yet).

How badly did your eyes suffer because of the treatment? Is it a
common side effect?

Hi fella (what's your real name?)  Eye trouble is fairly common on tx.
Mostly just annoying superficial infections like blepharitis and
conjunctivitis, but there is an uncommon side effect of tx called
Interferon Retinopathy that can be dangerous.  If you have vision
problems, expecially something like cloudy spots or "cotton wool spots"
get with your doctor  asap.  When my vision blurred 12 weeks into tx I had
to stop treatment and wait to see an opthamologist.  It turned out to be a
fatigue related wandering eye thing - no permanent damage - but I have to
wonder if the laspe in treatment was one of the factors that contributed
to my relapse :-(  If you have to see an opthamalogist, try to avoid a
lapse in treatment!

Also my eyes were VERY photosensitive during tx.  So I would say make sure
you have your regular eyeglasses on hand, an a good pair of sunglasses.
Thow flip-up thingies are very stylish...

Oh yeah I remember now I went to a Physician's Assistant for what I
thought was conjunctivitis (pink eye) and she prescibed something for
that, but my opthamologist determined that it was blepharitis and snubbed
the PA.  Can you get your eyes checked before tx, as a baseline?  I think
some tx doctors routinely order a pre-tx exam (?).  Good luck
Jack Black - 05 Apr 2007 10:24 GMT
About 12 weeks into the tx (peg-interferon and rebetol) my vision went
suddenly a bit blurred, especially in the right eye. I saw an ophthamologist
(the same one) who confirmed that it wasn't cotton-wool spots or any other
retinal problem. However, he thought it was the beginnings of a cataract. So
I stopped the tx at that point. Now he says it was not a cataract but just
normal age dependant stiffening of the lens. Most people get this at around
the age of 45 and I was 47 when doing the tx. Odd thing though was that my
vision became myopic. I could see things up close but not far way. Usually
at that age, it's the other way around with long-sightedness being the norm.

This is so common, the misinformation amongst the medical profession, about
hepatitis c.
Please, write a formal letter to his office, with copies to his governing
association and your local health agency, correcting his misinformation.
Include documentation and sources, be polite and don't bother including your
personal opinion.

This is a worthwhile use of a bit of your time and a couple of postage
stamps, and you may be surprised at the results. Some time ago I complained
about inaccuracy in a hep c pamphlet available at my g.p's office, and of
course I was told that the information was the result of medical studies
etc. etc. But, once I provided the correct information backed up by reliable
medical sources, the pamphlets (which said hep c was a sexually transmitted
disease) were removed.

If we would do more of this, people might pay attention and get their facts
straight before running off at the mouth.

Dear Jack,
Find yourself another opthamologist!  I wore contacts before, during
and after sucessful treatment without any poblems at all.  This is
just another case of Hep C discrimination and ignorance.  Don't
believe him!

Jeeb,
Unfortunately not.....yahoo cancelled my account at one point and I
lost John's home
address and phone number.  I plan to go to Hawaii in the Fall and
would love to see him....I know he hooked up with another woman who
posted on this site.  Perhaps she could contact me directly with any
info.
