It's good to see so many old faces still here. And good to see so many
NEW ones too.    I've got a question for the old timers here.

It's getting close to a couple of years now since finishing treatment,
(you believe that?)and a LONG time since seeing the BCLD. Now he told me
at the time, that a couple/few  years after treatment if I got my SVR
(which as you know I did) that we might do another Liver biopsy/tests to
see how the liver is doing etc..

My Question is, has anyone else had to do this?   I just got a Letter
from my BCLD's office, saying it was time for a followup appointment?

AAACK!
ANOTHER BIOPSY????

I guess it would be good information towards learning about hep c related
liver disease, effects of treatment and all that, but I sure wouldn't be
lining up to join that study group. I got my SVR in 2001 and no one's
suggested taking further biopsies.

If you're having problems with your liver and perhaps an ultrasound has
shown reason for a closer look, that's another matter entirely.

I'm not sure if thats what he wants to do. But, he DID say that to me.
Guess I'll find out. My appointment won't be until May 5th.

Hi Michael! It's feeling like Old Home Week here today :-)

I can't remember your specifics - what was the result of your pre-tx biopsy?

If you're feeling magnanimous, contributing to a study would be a fine thing
to do for humanity. Otherwise, it comes down to a risk-benefit thing for you.

If my original biopsy score was F1 or below, I'd say the risk and
inconvenience of a biopsy outweigh any possible benefit of knowledge gained.
Otoh, if I was an F2 or above, there *might* be enough interest *five years*
post-tx to see how well the liver has become. No point in doing anything
sooner than that in any case. You're cured, only good things can happen, but
they are going to take some time to be frank enough to show up in biopsy.

While you're waiting ;-) I would spend some time wading through the pertinent
studies that are showing SVR is associated with generally improved liver
histology, and that architecturally-correct regeneration happens (!)

Cheers - and good to hear from you again!

well, I guess I'll see what the BCLD has to say. I have a little while
to wait until my appointment (May).

I asked my dr if I needed another biopsy to see how my liver is
doing once I finish tx and (hopefully!) get my SVR.  He said
no... as long as I clear the virus and my enzymes look good they
don't like to do any more biopsies.

Hey, Michael.  Unless you were cirrhotic or close to it, I don't see any
practical reason for doing it.  That is, unless you like holes being
punched in you.  :-)  Or maybe your doc's Aruba vacation is in jeopordy
because he hasn't referred enough patients for biopsy and is missing his
quota.  :-)

What would the advantage or non-research purpose be of a biopsy for someone
cirrhotic or close compared to those with other stages of liver disease?

Mainly because those patients that have been diagnosed as cirrhotic
aren't necessarily 'out of the woods' even after obtaining SVR.  Their
liver status requires closer monitoring than those who had mimimal
damage.

So they would be looking for a marked decrease in liver function? Aren't
there easier tests for this?
Not disagreeing with you, Doc, just wondering.

Hi Michael,
I don't know if you remember me but I had a blast from the past today (elmo)
and decided to check in.
I just get a yearly hcv screen and never actually see the doc. It's been
negative each time!

Hey HC, it's really good to see you again. Have been wondering how you
have been. Hope you and your son are doing well. Keep in touch. Good to
see Hippiechik back and know that Heppiechik is a memory.

Hello again.  Nice to see you've dropped in.  Good to see that the
hEppiechick label has been dropped too :-)
Glad to hear that no HCV is traceable as well.
