OT, question for Dylan fans

We've been listening to a lot of Dylan around here lately, and my
husband has noticed (I still don't notice much on my own yet)
that the name "Maggie" comes up in several of his songs.   Anyone
know if Maggie was someone in his life (and/or who)?

I think that was the name of his pet monkey.  But don't quote me on
that.  :-)

You know, I remember a (very serious in a cosmic way), discussion of that
topic in Rolling Stone or The Oracle or the Georgia Straight back in '68.
forgot the outcome.  I don't think there was one.

(not working on Maggie's Farm no more)
"The pumps don't work cause the vandals took the handles" (fave Dylan lines)
and "Johnny's in the basement, mixin up the medicine" for tx.  subterranean
homesick blues for sure when I was humping that stuff.

After a google, it seems that your question is on a lot of minds. Many
theories, none conclusive, all interesting. Ask hubby to consider how
similar "Maggie" and "McGee" sound.

There was a nice head shop in Takoma Park, MD, called Maggie's Farm, in
a house on a little hill. This was back in the late sixties when that
song first came out and "coincidently", the owner of the shop's name was
Maggie. It was the first song he sang when he came here last summer with
no comment, of course, as to who "Maggie" is.

I always thot that Maggie was Rod Stewart's gay trombone player.  You
don't suppose Dylan was blowing Rod's horn section, do you?

No, I don't think that Maggie May is a man, nor do I think that Dylan
was referring to her because Maggie's Farm came out way before Stewart's
Maggie May did. Of course, you know that and are just trying to start
some trouble again.

what the pending fuss is about...  (?gay trombone player?)
Bob Dylan saying he did not want to be catagorized, cartonized and sucked
into the industry in 1964, when it was just an octopus.  The industry is now
the whole damn seafloor.  43 years later we have splashdown...

Maggies Farm
Bob Dylan  circa 1964

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
Well, I wake in the morning,
Fold my hands and pray for rain.
I got a head full of ideas
That are drivin' me insane.
It's a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor.
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.
Well, he hands you a nickel,
He hands you a dime,
He asks you with a grin
If you're havin' a good time,
Then he fines you every time you slam the door.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.
Well, he puts his cigar
Out in your face just for kicks.
His bedroom window
It is made out of bricks.
The National Guard stands around his door.
Ah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
Well, she talks to all the servants
About man and God and law.
Everybody says
She's the brains behind pa.
She's sixty-eight, but she says she's twenty-four.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am,
But everybody wants you
To be just like them.
They sing while you slave and I just get bored.
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

No, Rod Stewart sang that song about Maggie Trudeau, who at the time, was a
recent cast off from the Rolling Stones green room tour if you believe the
pipparatsi.  Stop saying that Cody once played the sax, Elmo.
