Hello Everyone!!!!!

Boy am i stressing, I am a 43 year old male who finished treatment a
month ago.  I have type 2b and did the interferon/ribo treatment.  I
am having a huge issue with my hair.  Didn't really seem to loose much
on treatment, but now it seems like it is really thinning out.  I am
noticing some bald spots all of a sudden, also and the texture is also
changing.  My questions  to the group are this....

Why is my hair falling out now and how long can I expect this to
continue for after treatment????
And secondly, is their a good chance that it will grow back????

Please help

Ok, slow down, take a few deeeeep breaths - and don't forget to exhale ;-)

You are/were genotype 2, so you did 24 weeks of therapy, yes?
Well, son, 24 weeks is just about when the hair thinning really gets a goin'.

For a g1 or g4, 24 weeks is merely mid course, of course, and those of us who
were saddled with one of those types were conditioned to experience such
things while in the depths of treatment. And frankly, that's usually a trivial
problem in that context.

But for you lucky g2s and g3s, well, heck, you're *done* with treatment - and
so you can't understand why your hair is all f.cked up 'cuz you're not on
drugs anymore!

ahahahahahahahahahaha!

Trust me, in another six months or so it'll all go back to whatever it would
have looked like in late 2007 if you hadn't been on therapy at all.

Of course, that means if you were genetically fated to grow a bald spot by
early 2007, well, it's here ;-)

But the rest of it will go back to "normal".
Have faith :-)

Cheers

/greyhackles (been there, done that. yeah, it's weird stuff, but it goes away)

I am not posting this to scare you.  You are seeing a doctor and if
you do have any liver problems I am sure they would find them in the
tests you have done.  I am just kind of thinking out loud.

The only reason I mention it is that hair loss is one sign of advanced
cirrhosis.

At least 5 years before I found out I had cirrhosis, I experienced
alopecia.  I was also going to collage at the time.  I had been out of
high school over 15 years so my dermatologist said stress could have
been the cause of my hair loss.  I really wonder now if it could have
been an early warning sign that I had liver problems.

My hair came out in a very strange way.  It would start as a bald spot
in a small circle and the circle would get bigger.  The circles got so
big that the entire area was bald.  I went bald across the back of my
head and spots on the top of my head.  I also had small circles in my
beard.  I looked like I had the mange.  I had to ware a wig for over a
year.

The dermatologist told me I had alopicia.  That is a very fancy word
for "hair loss"  She said there was a chance that it would not grow
back or if it did grow back it could be gray.

Well all the hair did come back, and it was normal color.  I still
have more than my share of hair in the tub but my hair is full.

That is about it.  :)

But it's highly unlikely that it would occur without other, more serious
symptoms.
Besides, tx does not advance liver disease, it halts or reverses it.
Golfgirl, give yourself a couple of months for your hair to recover and
start growing back to normal.
You're fine.
Stop stressing... that can cause hair loss <grin>
dBo - 17 Mar 2007 14:57 GMT
I'd say Greyhackles' take on "timing" sounds about right. I completed
48 weeks in late November (four months post tx now) and my hair did
not start falling out right away, it took a while. I have very long
hair, and prior to treatment a rubber band only went around my
ponytail twice. Now it goes around the ponytail 6 times, so that gives
you an idea how much hair I started with and how much I lost.

In the months since tx ended, the hair loss did NOT stop right away,
but continued. Once the hair loss began in earnest, "It was normal"
for me to run a brush thru my hair, hold it up to look and there would
be something I'm guessing like 30 - 40 long hairs flying in the wind.
My hair came right out from the roots. No doubt there was breakage as
well, but mostly I noticed the long, full length hairs :(  Many people
seem to cut hair and go short for the duration of tx but I chose to
keep it long, because short is MORE work for me (curly hair - not a
pretty sight upon arising in the morning) Leaving it long allowed me
to keep it in ponytail, much less work and anything that was less
effort for me was A-OK.

The good news - just this past week, I was brushing my hair and upon
lifting my bangs, realized that new hair is growing in finally!
Yeah!  If I lift my bangs, I can see a thin fringe of new down along
the hairline, about half an inch long. But I don't think it fell out
in "patches" tho there were a few times when, trying to comb it out
after washing, that there were little "clumps" that pulled right out.

Texture change seems to be a common complaint - ie from thick and
curley to thin and wispy, but people seem to agree that when it grows
back, for most folks, it grows back normally. Now if only my bones and
muscles would quit aching constantly, I'd really be on my way ;)

You'll probably be fine.  I did use Rogaine and I think it helped.  You
might want to try it.  If you live in the States and have a Wal-Mart nearby,
the store brand is just as good.

If it continues past the next few months or becomes even worse, it *could*
be something called "alopecia areata."  It appears to be triggered by severe
stress.  That's unlikely in your case but something to keep in mind.

WOW!!!!!!  THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT RESPONSES, I REALLY DO APPRECATE
THE INFORMATION.  I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A PROBLEM
WITH MY HAIR.  I HAD A TRANSPLANT WHEN I WAS 31, NOW I AM 43 AND THAT
IS WHY I AM STRESSING SO MUCH.  IF I START LOOSING MY HAIR NOW, WILL
IT COME BACK SINCE I ALREADY HAVE A PROBLEM???  THIS IS TOTALLY
FREAKING ME OUT.  I AM OBSESSED WITH IT TO BE HONEST, I CAN SEE MY
HAIR THINNING BY THE DAY AND WONDER IF IT IS EVER GONNA STOP...has
anyone else experienced this also????

CALM DOWN!!!!
And unlock your CAPS key, it makes you sound even more hysterical.
You "forgot to mention" that you have always had a problem... well, there's
your answer now, isn't it?
You thanked us all for the responses and information, but you're still
panicking about your freakin' hair so you obviously either don't believe us
or you're happier in a state of high anxiety about your freakin' hair.
Ask your family doctor about it, ask your hairdresser or, better yet, see a
counsellor. Your hair isn't the problem, your obsession with it is. This
newsgroup is all about hep c. You completed treatment, congratulations, and
we're all interested in talking about that, but I don't think anyone give's
a rat's a.s about their own hair, never mind yours.

Thank you for reminding me that this news group is all about hepatitis
C, and just to let you know your insenitity to this issue is not
appreciated.  Hair loss is a side effect of the treatment and I am
just looking to see what others have to say.  Hair may not be
important to you, but it sure is to me and it may be to many others
here also.  So in the future it would be appreciated if you kept your
negative remarks to yourself and let the rest of us talk about issues
that we have!!!!

Elmo, I cared about mine until it all fell out and left me looking like
Telly Sevalis (sp) when I was only 43 at the end of my 1st round of tx.
Oh wait, I cut it off for the summer and then it grew back. Never mind.
:) Of course it got thin again during the second round of tx, but at the
age of 50, in my family, it isn't unusual to have thinning hair, or in a
more politically correct way, follicly challenged.

Shucks!  There's a chance your hair will keep thinning til it all falls

Turn off your caps lock.  I always hated to be yelled at.

Your hair will probably grow back but only your doctor can say if the
transplanted hair will grow back.  Meanwhile, do what I did when I developed
alopecia--shave your head.  It's awesome in the summer.

Did the doctors tell you that your alopecia was due to treatment,
cirrhosis, stress or what?
Thip - 21 Mar 2007 00:52 GMT

It happened a few years before I was dx'd with HCV.  I was going through a
period of extremely severe, prolonged, nonstop stress.  To give you an idea
just how severe, about in the middle of it my friend's husband (they were
both teachers) took the whole family on vacation to the beach.  I don't know
what-all transpired, but he ended up pulling out a gun and she realized he
intended to slaughter them all.  She got the 3 kids out before he killed her
and then himself.

It was not a good year at all.
