Well, I am preparing to leave Windows. I have been playing around with
Ubuntu, a free operating system based on Linux and it rocks! It
installed on an old HP computer, recognized the hard ware and downloaded
and installed 974 updates in less than 20 minutes. If you order the CD,
they will send it to you for free, even to Spain. No activation, no
product key numbers to punch in, no WGA, no WGA/N and no SPP. You can
install it on as many computers as you like and copy it and give to
friends. It comes with hundreds of programs that can be downloaded and
installed with the click of a mouse. The email program Evolution is very
similar to Outlook. Check out the screen shot here:

http://www.ubuntu.com/include/img/evolution.png

You can run the CD without installing it to see how you like it and even
set up email, surf the net, etc. without installing it.

Either download it or order the CD here:

Don't jump, Cody!  We can work this out.  That's a long-term solution to
a short-term problem.  Whatever you do, just don't jump.  I called the
fire dept in Valencia and told them they had a 'jumper' named Cody.
They should be arriving any minute and will take you somewhere to get
help.  Hang on, bro!

I checked out the site and like the look of the s/w but I just can't say
goodbye to Adobe and that needs Windoze :-(
I couldn't find any reference, but will any of their stuff work on XP or is
it strictly Linux?

On the upside, I followed a couple of links from the site and ended up
finding a resource for filenames that show up in Startup, along with how
useful, necessary, or not, they are. After spending about an hour with
Msconfig and the list, I've cut my boot time by about 25%. Whoo-hoo!

Here's the link for any of you that are interested in cleaning a lot of
unnecessary, time-consuming crap out of your startup sequence:

None of the programs that come with Ubuntu will work with Windows. You
can, however, set up your computer to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. All
you need to do is install from the Ubuntu CD and Ubuntu will push
Windows to one side and make some room for itself. That's what I plan to
do until I get comfortable with Ubuntu and check out all their programs.
With the DRM, SPP and "security" features of Vista, I want to know Linux
well before XP is no longer supported. Not to mention the high cost of
Vista and the fact that one of my computers isn't up to snuff for Vista.

Tomorrow I am finally having my hemorrhoids operation and the business
is slow in December so, while I'm recuperating, there is this Linux
activist guy in Canada who will be helping me with the ins and outs of
Ubuntu.

Yeah, Vista is making me nervous too. MS has always seemed determined to
replace a workable os with something user-nasty (remember the first 98? ME?)
and s/w manufacturers support this by not inlcuding older o/s options in new
releases, although I think Photoshop CS will run on 98. I may try the
dual-boot idea though, and use it when I can. Unfortunately, other than
internet & email stuff, mostly all of my puter work is heavy on the graphics
end, and everyone I deal with is on Mac or PC. We're a little slow up here,
must be the cold...

I'm happy to hear that you're finally getting your surgery.
Congratulations - you've suffered with 'roids for as long as I've known you
and I'm pretty sure that's not much fun. Wishing you good luck and a quick
recovery!

I agree entirely. Vista will be much stricter on upgrading hard ware and
anti piracy, not to mention the outrageous price for Vista Ultimate.

The guy who's helping me is a Canadian ;-) Ubuntu comes with some
imaging programs. I haven't used them so I don't know how good they are.
Nor do I know if Adobe makes PhotoShop for Linux. I need a good fax
program but I haven't figured out how to use it in Ubuntu yet. For that
matter, I tried to download and install Firefox 2 and I couldn't figure
out how to install it. Once I am back on my feet from the operation, I
will install XP Pro and Ubuntu on my test machine and get back in touch
with the Canadian and figure these things out. I'll ask him about
imaging programs for Ubuntu for you.

Thank you. It has gotten so bad that it's a hassle just to go two blocks
to the supermarket. I have spoken to a number of people who have had
this operation and it seems like it won't be too painful and the
recuperation period is about two weeks. Course, they will give me pain
medication so if you see some more than usual off the wall posts here,
you'll know it's me :-)

Poor Microsoft; they don't realize that they're forcing people to abandon
their product.

I think, after surgery, you might be more comfortable on your feet than
sitting down ;-)

I knew a couple of Linux gurus when I was in Vancouver but lost touch with
them over the years; the o/s is surprisingly popular here... maybe because
of  the little penguin that Red Hat used for its logo. You know... penguins,
Arctic, cold... we like that kind of thing <g>

Sorry, must be a time zone thing, but I thought you were having surgery
today. However, you'll be back home and on your feet before you know it! Too
late now I guess, but this would have been the perfect time to get a biopsy.
I had mine while I was unconscious (gallbladder removal) and highly
recommend it.

Good luck on it all, and my sympathy to your family-- I remember when my Dad
had the same surgery (many years ago, though, so presumably the procedure
has improved) and he was kinda cranky for a few days. Take care,

Cody.  I have known a couple of people have 'roids ops too and they
were both delighted with the results.  Was a pain in the arse though
at first.

Well, I don't feel too bad. Very susceptible to the cold and my butt
hurts a bit, although I am on continual pain medication through a chip
on my chest that leads to a bottle of medication. In addition, I have
some pills to take before going to bed to reduce the pain even more so I
can sleep.

I was very impressed with the kind way they treated me, very impressed.
The nurses seemed like they were my sisters and were very concerned for
my welfare, not just doing their job.

Anyway, most of my time the next few days will be spent in bed but I
will be able to come back here to the computer probably once or twice a
day. Damn, I wish I had a laptop with WiFi.

Now that my 'roids are gone, maybe I'll keep one of my new year's
resolutions and be nicer to people, even Sara and PaulG :-)

Always try to disable the boot up from the program, not MSCONFIG, unless
the program doesn't have that feature.

I should have mentioned this, as well as, in removing a program, start with
the Add/Remove Programs rather than Msconfig or deleting what you find in
Explore.

No newsreader in Evolution. You have download Thunderbird or some other
reader for that.

Seriously, I do intend to get into an alternative operating system
sometime.  Like you say though, it's handy to keep a foot in the MS
camp too as most people will still be using MS operating systems.
Personally I would prefer it if there was a mass migration away from
MS but it'sunlikely to happen because of the convenience.

Vista will be the best thing for Linux since WGA/N. A friend of mine
works here as a computer tech repair and we are transitioning all his
clients to Ubuntu and they love it. How to install Ubuntu if you already
have Windows installed: Boot to Windows and open your CDROM and slip
Ubuntu in it. Run the live CD. Click on the Install icon on the Ubuntu
desktop. Watch. Input your user name and password. Watch. Download and
install the updates that you'll be prompted to install. Watch. Done. No
product keys, no activation, no Windows Genuine Advantage and no
hassles. Want more programs than what comes with Ubuntu? Open Add/Remove
and tick what you want and then tick on Install. Done.

The French MPs just switched to Linux and many more will follow now that
Linux is much more user friendly than it was before. Try ordering the
Ubuntu CD and run it without installing it and you'll see what I mean.

Unless it's a complicated MS Office document, Open Office can handle
them just fine.

That said, I still intend to dual boot XP and Ubuntu until I get used to
Ubuntu.

Hey, Hal!  I have no idea what might be causing your confusion.  :-)
Maybe it's because Iberian surgeons use firecrackers to remove
hemmerhoids once the patient is asleep.  It's cheaper than conventional
surgery.
