Hey all,
This is not a message requesting monetary help.  :)  This is not a dire
emergency.  ???

Let me pare down the issue, according to my personal tale of woe.  I
relapsed from combo treatment on Geno 1b about ten months ago, I guess.
Treatment 'finished' (heh heh) about four months before that.

I am seeking advice on the best avenue to pursue.  My current pharma plan
will not pay for re-treatment.  Other carriers will not pick my file up
because of my pre-existing conditions.

I can afford to pay for something, either re-treatment (Ugh) for an extended
period beyond 48 weeks, or take advantage of new but unrecompensable, proven
treatment routine. If I re-mortage the homestead.  I don't like the idea,
but it won't kill me.  Or, I would like to participate in a phase 3 trial
with VX 950 or something like that, but I don't know how to connect.  Is
there a secret handshake or a christmas card protocol I have somehow missed?
I have registered with on-line resources like this:

http://www.centerwatch.com/contact.html

no news from them, so far.

Thanks in advance, compadres

Hi CJ. You won't like this advice.  If I were in your position, in Canada,
I would argue for a second biopsy AND an abdominal ultrasound (sonogram)
within the next year so you have a clear idea of the current status of
your liver and kidneys and upper abdominal organs.  Explain to your
hepatologist that you haven't had a biopsy for x number of years and you
have never had an ultrasound and that you need the information because you
are thinking about selling the farm to pay for re-treatment. If the
procedures are covered by Canadian health, he should order them, imo.
After you get the results seek opinions from a second hepatologist or GI
doctor, if possible.

Control your weight. Get you cholestrol and blook sugar checked.  Thump.

I see the AASLD meetings produced some new stats about the success of
combo re-treatment and consensus interferon.  I need look more closely at
those, and review them with my doc because I also have to decide when and
if to fight for conventional re-treatment.

Secret handshake at:

Thanks for the link, Anon.  I will keep the group advised as to if and when
I am successful.  The peg 2b study for the reduction of fibrosis seems
interesting but I would be excluded because I was not in Shiering Plough's
first study.  Even though what was the choice brand of poison for me.  Oh
well, keep on plugging the holes as best I can.  :-)

In addition to the great suggestions Kathy and Ted made, you might want
to contact directly the company that's making the drug that you want to
be in their Phase III trial.  They should be able to tell you what docs
are participating.  My guess is that it'd be the same docs that did
their earlier testing.  Once you find out who, where and when, you can
take it from there.  If you can't get into a trial, daily Infergen seems
the best way to go.  yipppeeee!  :-)

OK, Elmo, and if you repeat the Infergen and Amantadine mantras long enough,
I might catch the wave.  :)  Gimme fried liver and onions?  oooo bad joke.

All things considered, I think you'd get the best bang for your buck if
you go that route.  There's always at least one way to skin the cat
(dragon).  :-)

     www.clinicaltrials.gov and specifically
http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct/search?term=hcv
gives information on what trials are recruiting and who to contact,
which is often not someone at the company. Even when the company is
directly involved, the site still gives you the exact office to contact
so you don't go bouncing around the bureaucracy for awhile. You can
probably do it the other way, but going to the above would seem more
efficient.
