Sexual xmission

Patrick McDonald - 25 Oct 2006 03:15 GMT I recently had sex w/an informed partner. Shortly afterwards, she was in an infectious disease protocol class for prospective LPN's and heard some horror stories regarding HCV and how easily it's passed during intercourse. I know the stats and ways that it's passed most often as a result of sex. I have always been upfront, honest, and responsible about my disease. The info that I can't find is this. My genotype is Type I. If I have indeed passed this virus to her, will her infection also be Type I?
Thanks, Patrick in Gainesville, FL

Once again, the medical community shows just how flagrantly ignorant it is with respect to HCV. It's everywhere you look.
Pathetic.
The truth of the matter is, HCV is damned difficult to pass via "conventional" forms of sexual congress. Period. End of story. And tell your girlfriend to pass that along to the nitwits that were teaching that course.
Otherwise....
Regardless of how it is passed, the passee will have the same genotype and subtype as the passer.
Cheers

Oh my god... what idiot sold that bunch of bullshit? Sexual transmission of HCV is EXTREMELY RARE. As Grey said, the ignorance in the medical community is pathetic. But spreading this kind of disinformation in courses for LPNs should be reason to fire the instructor.
References? Try the CDC:
[...] a low prevalence of HCV infection has been reported by studies of long-term spouses of patients with chronic HCV infection who had no other risk factors for infection. Five of these studies have been conducted in the United States, involving 30-85 partners each, in which average prevalence of HCV infection was 1.5% (range: 0% to 4.4%) [...]
Among persons with evidence of high-risk sexual practices (e.g., patients attending STD clinics and female prostitutes) who denied a history of injecting-drug use, prevalence of anti-HCV has been found to average 6% (range: 1%-10%) [...]
Although considerable inconsistencies exist among studies, data indicate overall that sexual transmission of HCV appears to occur, but that the virus is inefficiently spread through this manner. More data are needed to determine the risk for, and factors related to, transmission of HCV between long-term steady partners as well as among persons with high-risk sexual practices, including whether other STDs promote transmission of HCV by influencing viral load or modifying mucosal barriers

Sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus.

We tested 50 heterosexual partners of hepatitis C viraemic (HCV) individuals, using second generation HCV antibody assays and a validated polymerase chain reaction assay. In none of them were HCV antibodies or HCV-RNA detected. The median duration of the sexual relationship was 13 years. This study, with the most sensitive techniques for detection of HCV, indicates that the risk of sexual transmission of HCV is absent or very low.

Low risk of sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus. Hallam NF, Fletcher ML, Read SJ, Majid AM, Kurtz JB, Rizza CR.
Virology Department, Public Health Laboratory, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England.
Sexual transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) was studied between 104 anti-HCV positive index cases (99 haemophilic men, five women) who have attended the Oxford Haemophilia Centre and 104 (98 female, 6 male) longstanding sexual partners. Ninety-one percent of the index cases were HCV RNA positive by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 56% were anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive. Three (2.9%) sexual partners (each a female partner of a different HCV RNA positive haemophilic man) were anti-HCV, and HCV RNA, positive. All had other risk factors for HCV infection. Of 59 partners who were tested for anti-HIV four (7%) were positive and only one of these was also anti-HCV positive. There was no association between HIV positivity in the index cases and HCV positivity in their partners. Our results confirm a low risk of sexual transmission of HCV. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=7 689092&dopt=Citation

Russian - 25 Oct 2006 06:39 GMT Like the others said, sexual transmission is so rare that in the cases where it was reported, the individuals involved may have forgotten to mention the part about sharing needles.
