High ALT/AST during tx

Jack Black - 29 Sep 2006 14:33 GMT I'm now in week 22 of tx. Before starting tx, my liver enzymes were in the high-normal range but since starting, they have increased somewhat and are now in the low-high range if that makes any sense.
Normal ALT 5-50 My ALT is about 60 Normal AST 10-45 My AST is about 55
When I did tx the first time a few years ago with non-peg interferon plus rebetol, my liver enzymes dropped almost immediately to low-normal and stayed there throughout tx. Why should this time be different? I hope this isn't a bad sign but why should the enzymes be high when the viral load is non-detectable. Has anyone had a similar experience and still had an SVR at the end? Do the enzymes eventually drop to normal levels ?

If you did at week 12, and it was undetectable, then you can suppose high enzymes levels are probably due to drug reaction rather than relate them to a bad sign. Anyhow, you should check viral load in a couple of weeks (week 24 is a main checkpoint) and then you'll know for sure.
Cheers, jeeb.

Jack /////////////// Yes, I had a very similar experience as you during my last round of tx. And like you, my LFT's had normalized during previous rounds. My NP told me not to worry about it and if I recall, she said it had something to do with my liver not enjoying the battle going on inside it between the tx drugs and the virus. My LFT's finally normalized in the last few months of tx and I got my SVR. Yeah, I thought it was wierd that the LFT's went up in spite of the fact that the virus became undetectable early on, in the 8th or 9th week. At any rate, Jack, don't worry about it. The important thing is that you don't have any detectable virus. Keep after it, your LFTs will normalize. It won't have any bearing on you getting your SVR! elmo

Di Di - 30 Sep 2006 16:48 GMT > Re: High ALT/AST during tx > [quoted text clipped - 40 lines] > > Hey Jack -Of course Elmo's right! But for what it's worth, my LFTs seem to fluctuate up and down too and my viral load is none detected. My doc said not to worry about it. I really think it's the liver doing it's work to fight the virus. Di

However, in the end tx was successful and last time I checked they were low normal.
