Hi,
I see that you have the archive in google groups set to one week for your
postings.  I was looking for the one you made concerning the test you are
going to have in France, that costs ?70.  If you read this, could you
explain a bit about what information the results of this test is supposed to
provide.  And the name.  I lost track of what you called the procedure.

Thanks in advance

Probably FibroSpec or FibroSure. Google them and you'll get hits on the
manufacturer, labs that utilize the test(s), and results of analysis of
predictive value for each test.

These "tests" are actually algorithms that utilize a number of discrete test
values to combine to a net result. From what I read last year the tests are
good at determining the ends of the liver fibrosis spectrum, not so good for
differentiating the middle range. In other words, they'll likely provide close
matches to biopsy results for those with little damage or a lot of damage, but
may be off by a stage for those in the middle...

Cheers

FYI clinicalcareoptions.com  has an article:

"Debate: Are Noninvasive Tests Ready to Replace Liver Biopsy?"

More. (I stole this from the Clinical Care Options webswite).

"Fibrotest
Several biochemical and imaging tests have been developed to evaluate
liver histology and identify patients with cirrhosis. Many of these tests
have been developed for use in patients with chronic HCV,[97] and their
utility in other chronic liver disorders currently remains speculative.
Although all of these tests appear to easily differentiate patients with
absent or mild fibrosis from patients with advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis,
none currently appears to accurately match liver biopsy for the ability to
determine the stage-for-stage status of a patient.

Serum Inflammation Markers: FibroTest
FibroTest was developed retrospectively by correlating liver fibrosis
scores in patients with chronic HCV to a vast array of serum biochemical
and hematologic markers. Five serum markers were chosen, which together
had strong correlation with the fibrosis score by multivariate analysis.
These 5 factors are alpha-2 macroglobulin, haptoglobin, gamma-glutamyl
transpeptidase, total bilirubin, and apolipoprotein A1.[91] It is
interesting to note that none of these 5 markers is a precursor to or a
breakdown product of collagen or a matrix protein of fibrosis. Rather,
most are markers of the inflammation associated with chronic HCV
infection.[58] ActiTest, another noninvasive measure of hepatic
inflammation, utilizes the same 5 factors plus serum alanine transaminase,
suggesting that FibroTest is more appropriate for measuring liver
inflammation than fibrosis.

For patients with chronic HCV, FibroTest appears to provide good
separation between patients above and below METAVIR stage II fibrosis
(Figure 4).[58,30] By contrast, there is significant overlap in FibroTest
values between absent and METAVIR stage I fibrosis, as well as between
stage II fibrosis, stage III fibrosis, and cirrhosis. As a result,
FibroTest is not a precise enough measure of liver histology for patients
with greater than stage II fibrosis; more than 60% of patients with
chronic HCV fall into this group. FibroTest has been evaluated exclusively
in patients with HCV, and its utility in accurately assessing liver
histology in patients with other liver diseases remains to be
determined."

my doctor said that if the results were in the middle, i'd still had to have
a biopsy.
but i had score 0.07 which matches fibro=0, so i was a happy camper
and didn't mind paying the 70 euro for it.

hey cactus jammies
it is called a fibro test. my blood was sent to a lab in france by my hepatologist.
here is some information about how it's done:

and here is the machine that does it

(i have no clue what language it is, that page, but pictures are nice and clear)

hope you can get one too, better a pinch in the arm than a punch up the liver, i say!
