anonymousone - 05 Sep 2006 17:31 GMT I was driving over a friends house yesterday and a man named Doctor Marshall came on a radio show and he was promoting reishi mushrooms.. I couldnt quite believe what I heard.
He said (paraphrase) that reishi mushrooms were effective against all forms of Hepatitis and that they were more effective than interferon which he said was only 7% sucessful.
I know the latter statement is untrue although I suppose he may have been referring to interferon only therapy and not combo therapy. And even if he is, I would call that misleading information since nobody uses interferon therapy only anyway.
Ive read a lot about hep C therapy and nowhere have I read that reishi can cure hep C. How on earth does he get away with making those kind of statements? I heard it with my own ears.
Lonesomedave - 05 Sep 2006 19:44 GMT A gentleman named Lloyd Wright has written a book called "Triumph Over Hepatitis C". The reishi mushrooms are just one of a number of things he recommends, along with milk thistle, dandelion root, licorice root and quite possibly "eye of newt". I read some of that while I was trying to find a way out of taking interferon. It might have carried more weight with me if the guy wasn't actually selling the stuff he was writing about. He may well have cleared the virus while taking those things. I've known several people clear the virus while taking nothing. It's very unusual but can happen. I don't know if it stayed away for keeps either.

Hey - My kids gave me some Reishi capsules when they heard about my hep C DX. They said it was supposed to boost my immune system. I don't really believe in it and didn't want to take anything that "might" interfere with the interferon/riba therapy. I heard milk thistle reduces fibrosis, too, but makes the interferon/riba less effective. I say, why mess with that? The chemo seems to be kicking a.s right now!

h00hbt - 05 Sep 2006 20:09 GMT Wonder will never cease.
There is allways someone who wants to make a quick buck on other People's misfortune, whether it is illnesses, religion, gambling or dope, shame on them! I don´t belive that medical companies would invest billions of $ every year in researching for nothing if the answer to cure hep-C was that easy. Stick to your doctors advice, he/she has an education and i hold that higher than the quack you mention.
By the way, does anybody know where he lives? i would like to chuck some rock´s at him :-)

Complete crap, naturally. Reishi mushrooms may indeed have some positive effect on non-viral forms of hepatitis, and may have a general supportive function in liver disease (similar to milk thistle), though that's far from proven. They do not, however, kill the HCV virus.
As for how people can get away with stuff like that on the radio... you can claim all kinds of nonsense on the air with impunity (as long as it isn't an obscenity), there's little the FCC, the FTC, or the FDA can do to go after folks like that. First amendment rights are pretty powerful (and that's a good thing).

But now that I know about mushrooms, I'm going to stop using interferon and start using mushrooms and prove they work much better. Then I can go into business. Here is rough copy for my new infomerical:
"Did you know that hepatitis C is now killing more Americans than both AIDS and breast cancer combined? Hi. My name is Dr. Gilman and I had hepatitis C but was found to have been cured of the deadly virus after eating my mushrooms for only six months. For a limited time only, I will send you -- risk free -- the very same mushrooms that saved my life for only $19.95..."

I found it much cheaper to go out and pick them myself, plenty of cow pastures out there. :) Come to think of it, they didn't cure Hep-c, of course hadn't ever heard of hep-c at that time.

kjoh - 06 Sep 2006 00:31 GMT Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) is a fungus that shows antifibrotic properties in lab rats and test tubes. It doesn't cure hep c. Biomed researches are trying to isolate the magic compounds.
Think penicillin.
kj congratulation Burke! Whew!
