Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this group. I plan on starting treatment on July 4th. Are there
any other diabetics in here? Thanks in advance.

Hi Richard,
Please feel welcome within this group. Unfortunate for though, but I
guess you've become to the idea of treating Hep C, which I personally think
is a good idea, overall. There are some side effects that some people but
not recessarily all, suffer while on the Ribavirin - Interferon combination
treatment. One of them no doubt you know about is the anemia that gradually
wears you down. And to go with that of course, is that most have a lack of
appetite. It is pretty clear that unless you're used to support a larger
body and you feel you can lose weight as you go through treatment, then
perhaps that is worth considering. I lost weight, learned how to stimulate
my appetite and control the nausea. I but I still lost about 35 lbs over a
year and I was still heavier than I should be by the charts, (I don't think
so) but I felt anemic all the time. I felt like a fleet of garbage trucks
rolled over me at 3 mph. Eating is very important through out your
treatment so that you will have something left when the accumulated effects
of anemia and lack of have built up to the last quarter of your treatment.
appetite is worth remembering.

Do you know if you have diabetes or do you have insulin resistance?
Hep-c can cause insulin resistance and you may not really have
diabetes. A lot of people report a return to normal if they can clear
the virus.

I was told that I have diabetes. I have to take insulin injections twice a
day. My glucose appears to be in check now. It was through the roof before
I started the insulin. The doctor tried pills for only two days and I guess
I didn't respond fast enough. My glucose was scary high. That would be
pretty cool if it goes away though. Thanks Ron.

Hi Richard,
My name is Graham, and I'm a diabetic....

Are you currently in treatment, such as PegIntron / Ribavirun? I'm getting
ready to start that on 7/4 and wondering what kind of additional challenges
I may be faced with as a diabetic. Thanks for the reply.

Richard,
Yes, I am currently in treatment with PegIntron and Ribavirin. I
think the effects depend on the current health of individual and the
state of your diabetes. I am able to handle mine by taking small
doses of Glucotrol. I have heard people in this NG mention that there
may be a connection between HCV and Type 1. In some case, there are
reports that after successful treatment for the HCV, the diabetes went
away also. I'm not counting on it, but it's promising.

Richard, I'm a type II diabetic and have gone through tx twice so far.
What can I help you with.

Well, I was wondering if people with diabetes inject the interferon into
places other than where they inject the insulin. I was also wondering if
there were any different diet considerations other than what is recommended
by the literature. I guess I'm not sure what I'm looking for but not afraid
to ask. Thanks for your reply.

Richard, I did all of my injections in my stomach, my thighs don't
tolerate injections very well, I also did some of my insulin injections
in the back of my arms. I didn't worry about my diet too much while on
treatment, I just tried to eat anything I could, which wasn't much most
of the time. My BG levels weren't as good as they should have been
because I couldn't exercise and eating healthy wasn't always an option.
I did make it through treatment twice without missing much work, but tx
wasn't successful in my case. As far as asking questions, don't be
afraid to ask, I think we have discussed nearly every conceivable topic
related to hep-c and tx, as well as some that aren't related to anything.
