S1588. Liver Injury Related to Complementary and Alternative Medicine
(CAM): Compared with Conventional Medicine-related Liver Injury.
[...]
Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is generally considered
innocuous, which has been challenged by the increasing reports of
adverse drug reaction of CAM recently. Most cases with CAM-related liver
injury were reported sporadically. Systemic data in this category is
little. The aim of this study was to explore the characteristics of
CAM-related liver injury in Taiwan, compared with the conventional
medicine-related liver injury.
[...] A total of 619 cases were diagnosed to have DILI. Of them, 148
(24%) were CAM-related, and 471 (76%) were conventional
medicine-related. [...] Mortality of CAM group was 4.7% (7 cases), which
was comparable to that of conventional medicine group (4.5%, 21 cases).
The incriminated agents of CAM-related mortality cases were dry snake
gall bladder 3, clerodendruon calamitosum 1, compound herbs 3. The
leading offending drugs of conventional medicine group were
anti-tuberculosis drugs, antibiotics and non-steroid anti-inflammatory
drugs.

Conclusions:

One fourth of drug-induced liver injury in Taiwan is due to CAM. The
mortality and severity of CAM group is similar to those of conventional
medicine group. However, the patients with CAM-related liver injury had
older age, lower educational level and high serum bilirubin level than
those of conventional medicine-related liver injury. The herb or CAM is
not harmless as assumed. Strict pharmacovigilance to CAM as to
conventional medicine is urgently needed.

Hey thanks for the info Thomas.  Whew, it's a good thing IFN combo therapy
is so safe!  It's  reassuring to know that unlike the peddlers of evil
alternative medicine, the peddlers of Big Pharma aren't motivated by
money! Everybody in their right mind knows that old wisdom and
unquantifiable intuition are useless.

I'm not sure where that outburst comes from, but the message is pretty
clear: Despite the often repeated propaganda, CAM medications are NOT
automatically safe. Instead, they, just like conventional medicine, can
cause considerable harm, including liver damage, liver failure, and
death. You can jump up and down all you want, that doesn't change the
numbers.

Not that one, silly!!  The other one before that.  You know, the one
after the first one but before the last one.  Yeah, I'm doing ok...but
I've got too much weed on my hands.  Glad you're out of the can.  That
probably makes Prince Albert happy........
