High glucose levels

Hi,

I've been on prednisone for the last few weeks becuase of my thyroid. During
this past weekend I've developed blurry vision and found that predinisone
can cause this. Off a whim I bought a cheap glucose test and found that my
glucose level is up to 350. Which can also cause blurry vision. Would this
warrant an ER trip? I tried to call the ER but the nurse never picks up the
phone.

I don't think you need to go to the ER for this, it takes a while for
high glucose levels to start having any permanent affect on your body.
While on Pred my glucose levels are around 500, I'm diabetic. You can
talk to your doctor about it and if your on long term pred he might put
you on insulin or some form of diabetic medication for the duration, but
it is probably unlikely. High glucose levels are common when on steroids
and the levels usually drop back to normal as soon as you discontinue
using them. And yes blurry vision is a side effect of high glucose
levels. Of course this is all my opinion and it isn't uncommon for me to
be wrong, just ask my wife.

Thanks Dwight,

I just wanted to make sure that I'm not getting into a panic mode. I can
tell you that after a lifetime of 20/20 to go suddenly blurry can be quite
frightening. I suspect that I'm ok for now and I'll call my doc first thing
in the morning.

I should be off the pred in a few weeks. Thank God.

Im not a doctor but I would be very concerned about such high blood
sugars and blurred vision.

"If your blood sugar stays over 300 when you check it two times in a
row, call your doctor"

Dangers of ketoacidosis

   * Uncontrolled high blood sugar over a period of time can cause
Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
   * DKA happens when the body cannot use the glucose normally. The
sugar builds up. The body starts to break down fat for energy and
causes the blood becomes to become acidic. This can lead to many
complications, including death.
   * Blood sugars with DKA are usually between 600 and 1,000mg/dl

I've seen people go into ketoacidosis and its not pretty. It can end
your life. Dont panic but I would see a doctor as soon you can.

As long as he is on prednisone, his glucose levels will remain high on
average. If your glucose levels do increase substantially, you will
definitely start to feel bad. But, these effects are temporary and his
glucose levels should return to normal upon completion of the steroids.
I agree that he should call his doctor to relieve his concerns. If he
was a diabetic his doctor probably or least should have told him about
the increase in glucose levels. But face it, if your not a diabetic,
most people would recognize an increase in their glucose levels. If your
not diabetic it just isn't normal to check, I sure wouldn't if I didn't
have to. If your bg reaches 300 and your not on steroids, then it is
important to get in and get checked for diabetes. I've known I'm a
diabetic for 15 years and don't know how long I was before that. I've
been on prednisone off and on for over 6 years. I know the affect of
both very well, too well.

I'm not a big fan of prednisone for a variety of reasons.  You might
recall my 'EEEKS' post when you first mentioned you were prescribed it,
PT.  As long as you're only taking it VERY short-term, that's a good
thing.  Just ask Shawn what he thinks of prednisone when he gets back
from vacation.
How's the flight simulator trip going?  You launched yourself into outer
space yet, man?  I'm flying myself right now.......and I don't even need
a simulator!  It's 'Blue Sunday' and my friends get me high.  :-)

Speaking of 'distractions', I took my Les Paul geetar to the monthly
blues picnic and jam and cut her loose for a few minutes today.  First
time I've ever done that....I was scared shitless.  Hung in there on a
few pentatonic scales and tried to make it as soulful as I could.....had
the sustain turned up all the way.  :-)  Did the safe thing so's I
didn't hit any bad notes.  When I was finished, one of the best blues
players in the area said I had 'nice touch' and when I told him I wanted
to get alot better, he told me he'd be willing to work with me.  Funny
thing, PT, I had no serious interest in playing guitar until a good
hepper friend of mine named Bobby got me into it.  I got my first guitar
5 years ago when I was doing my first round of tx and needed something
to do.  I couldn't concentrate on anything for more than five minutes
and got really frustrated alot of times.  Forget about trying to learn
how to play a song....ahaahahahahaha  I couldn't remember my name, much
less how to play a tune.  It was therapeutic listening my guitar make
noises and hitting an occasional good note.
sh.t man, life IS GOOD!!
I've got a feeling you're going to turn your simulator into the real
McCoy someday.  Hang in there, Bud.

Yeah, Prednisone really sucks. I hate it. I can tolorate it ok for about a
week, but anything after that is bad news. I have about 8 days left. I've
started the tapering already.

I flew in the early morning from KSEA to CYVR. (Seattle to Vancouver) in a
DC3. Very relaxing and distracting believe it or not.

It was so beautiful in the Seattle area that my wife and I spent the day
outside. Damn it was so nice! THAT was a good distraction. We mananged to
get a lot done around the yards, and go to Home Depot/Lowes to get all that
much needed yard stuff.

It was a very productive day for me yesterday, and I'm damn grateful for it.
:)

You should get someone one to take some video of you playing and put it on
your site. C'mon elmo! Let us watch! :)

I'm sure I'll be ok until I see the doc anonymousone. When I got up this
morning I checked my bg again just to see. It was 120. Which I suspect is
normal. I just don't know enough about diabetes to know if this is normal
even for diatetics when they wake in the morning. Do diabetics have nornal
bg in the morning and then raises throughout the day?

My grandmother was a type II diabetic. As I experience this I'm beginning to
wonder that maybe I should start getting screened for diabetes. If it runs
in the family then surely I have a chance of either having it now or
developing it without knowing.

Hmmmmm....funny how things work out. I think getting screened is a good idea
now.

Thanks Dwight for your input.

I am concerned about my glucose levels going wacky too. I went out and
got me a meter so thats the first thing I check when I feel wierd. If
you can get you doctor to write you a prescription for the meter, you
can get the newest one available for free. That's what I did. Goto this
web-site and print out a coupon.. www.breezemeter.com
