Hemoglobin   12.9

WBC          4.5

The nurse says my leves are down but not a problem yet. She also
indicated most people hemoglobin count goes down and then stabilizes.

Anybody have ther hemoglobin stabilize after 5 weeks or did it continue
to go down?

She's right. You're barely anemic at this point. Not bad for 5 weeks, I'd say.
In contrast, by the 5th week my hemoglobin was down to 10.6, right before the
wheels really came off the wagon...

Probably true as well.

Stabilize after 5 weeks?
Ummm....Decidely, no.

Lessee...it took me more than 12 weeks to hit bottom - bottom being the very
low 8's where I was the day they finally turned on the Procrit. Now *that's*
anemia ;-)

And as you can see, I wasn't exactly the poster child for Procrit either. Even
with 60K IU shots every week for the rest of my 48 weeks on tx, my hemoglobin
never made it back to 11 'til therapy was over and done.

But compared to the 8's, HGB in the 10's felt fabulous :-) which is the least
one could hope for considering the EPO was costing around $850 a shot, times
35 shots...

So don't worry about it for now, you're doing great!

Cheers

I appreciate your input. With a heart condition, I dont think I can
really afford to get too low in the hemoglobin count.

Yup, you're spot on with that thought, though at just under 13 you're still in
statistically good shape. If you plateau above 11.5 I'd say count your lucky
stars :-)

How aware of your history is your treatment doc? And how frequently are you
getting blood tests? This early in the game you should be getting biweekly
blood tests at least.

Nope. Not that often. Next blood test is at week 8. But this is an HMO
so you get what they give you.

They are not that aware of my history. They know I have an abnormal
EKG and a possible left ventricular enlargement. If  I tell them more
they would most likely pull the plug on treatment. I guess I'll just
have to monitor myself for chest pain or shortness of breath. The nurse
co-ordinatoor told me to get to urgent care if I experienced either.

Its starts to boil down to this:

(1) Do I want to die of  cirrohosis of the liver, or (2) do I want to
take my chances with treatment and possibly be cured but risk the
chance of a heart attack?

I dont like the choices but I prefer choice #2 at this point.

I completely understand your decision, I'd likely go the same way.
Would your doc prescribe Procrit if needed, or would they cut your treatment
meds first?

Just take it easy, no heroics, keep on top of your condition and hopefully
your hemoglobin will have a nice soft landing somewhere above 11.5.

They will prescribe procrit but not unless I drop below 10. Hopefully,
that wont happen.

You know, I was thinking about you today and remembered you had heart
issues. Did you happen to mention the pain you've been having after taking
riba...?
I too have an abnormal ekg, they all knew it and didn't require futher
investigation. I experienced shortness of breath quite a bit while on tx.
Even had the occassional chest pain....hmmm.

Anyway, perhaps if you ask to have the blood work monitored more frequently
they might allow it? Can't hurt to ask.

My next appointment is May 4. If  Im feeling very tired or have chest
pain, Ill ask for more frequent tests.

Probably your choice between your concern for existing circulatory problems
and the effects of combination HCV therapy will be made for you when your 12
week PCR results come back.  When is that?  I predict that if results are
favourable for beating the dragon, that's the way you'll go.

My test results taken two weeks before the end of 48 week treatment are as
follows

WBC    3.80
RBC     3.21
Hgb      10.1
HCT       0.306

Hi "anonymous",

in my opinion your numbers are quite good. Mine were lower after that
span of time. As far as I was concerned and from what I've heard here
Hemoglobin level and blood cells count do stabilize after a month or so
after treatment. Later on there can be some more dropping due to the
amount of ribavirin that builds up into your body.

So far so good anyway.

Cheers,
jeeb.

My Hemoglobin and nuets bottomed out around week 18, then came up just a bit
and stabilized. Good thing as my Nuets were .7 and the doc was going to cut
my Peg in half.. This was over two years ago and they weren't up to the
blood booster drugs yet.

I remember I was one tired cranky SOB though!!!!
