I read somewhere there were 130,000 people treating and there is 3 to 4
million infected. Thats like 4 or 5 %

That's certainly not the estimated world-wide population of heppers. In fact
that'd even be a low-ball estimate if it only covers the USA...
The treatment rate isn't surprising. Consider most people never have a clue
they're C+ until some other emergent health issue leads someone to stumble
upon it...

I see...yeah sounds right. I always knew I had something-back then they
called it Non A Non B Hepatitis. then sought treatment when I started
getting sick. Then they said I had Hep C...and if I would start
treatment. So here I am!

How would they even know how many people are infected? Its like the #
of illegal aliens. Anybodys guess.

Well, no, there's much more science and applied mathematics than guess.
For example, the sheer number of inductees into the armed services, along with
the typical physical exam required, provides a great deal of first-order
insight into a number of health issues. Similarly, health providers have lots
of data on their clients. Statisticians working with social scientists can
take all this data in and come up with numbers for the population at large
that are likely to be reasonably close to "reality"...

I believe they could get a reasonably accurate estimate if they tested a
large sample of specimens in a variety of geographic locations
throughout the US, making sure they took the specimens relative to each
racial/ethnic group represented in the population.

Last I'd seen, the generally accepted estimate was that 3% of the
general population and 6% of Viet Nam era veterans are infected with
hcv, 50% of those infected know that they are infected. elmo

Thanks Elmo, that would certainly explain why the waiting room in the liver
clinic are so crowded. I think I mentioned that it was my new (strict) Dr.
that insisted I go to the clinic to get treated. I bet there are others
like me that dont know advances have been made in hcv treatment. I
remember being told in 91 or 92 that there was no treatment.

50% of the general pop, or 50% of vets? If the former, that seems
really high to me.

I meant that half the people who have hcv don't know they have it. But
I would guess that that percentage is lower for vets since the VA is
aware of the higher risk for vets and does a better job of screening its
patients.
