Had my biopsy

I just underwent a very painful biopsy on Wednesday.  I am just now
starting to recover.  Everything I have read on the net said it
wouldn't be painful or only minimal pain.  I have made a decision to
never have another one done since I lay crying for 30 minutes until the
percodet kicked in.  But I am curious, do we have to go through just
one or several of these suckers and will they knock you out if
requested to do so.

Susan-

I've had two and neither was painful. I wondered why they gave me any
drugs at all. I understood them wanting to keep me around for several
hours to make sure there was no bleeding. But he pain was only like a
bruise on my skin.

Maybe you should contact your doc and see just how frequent this type
of reaction is.

Good luck,
Steve

Wow - You are lucky Steve.  From what they told me at the Hospital, it
is very common.  It wasnt so much pain at the site, this went clear up
to my shoulder.  I couldnt move, could get no comfort.  Hell maybe Im
just a big baby when it comes to pain.  I do know that it takes alot
for me to cry and my pillow showed the results.

I never had much in soreness with mine, a bit tender for a couple of
days. When they jabbed me I was flying on phentynal and didn't much
give a sh.t at the moment, hehe!! Hideous looking contraption for
taking the sample. They used ultra-sound to guide the needle. Did they
use that procedure for you? Just curious.

Sorry you had so much discomfort. Hope your test's come out ok.

Yes, i did have an ultra sound before hand.  My family doctor said they
may have touched a nerve that runs up to my shoulder.  I am glad to
report that I am back to work today.

Well I suppose that would be painful if they hit a nerve. When I had
mine done in 12/2004 and 11/1997. They had n ultrasound machine on me
while they doc was shooting the biopsy needle in.

Odd that there would be a pain nerve inside or run from midsection to
shoulder. I'm not saying there isn't, just saying I don't know much about
these things, but thought all the pain stuff was outer layers. The tall
dark handsome doctor I had just drew an outline of my liver with his finger
on my body for the very young beautiful lady Doctor observing. No ultra
sound or anything. But they did have the pics from the Ultra taken maybe a
month prior. (I didn't dare flinch with her there.) It didn't hurt, but I
sure took advantage of the free sleep time after the 100 mile morning trip
there.

Right-shoulder pain after biopsy is quite common.
Shawn - 24 Jan 2006 01:15 GMT
Shoulder pain after a biopsy is very common. I asked my BCLD about it and
she said they really don't know why that is. Interesting eh??

Why did they give you percodet, Susan? Did you request it for pain? I felt
nothing other than the punch. Mostly I knew what to expect from reading the
posts here. The topical was only thing that really hurt and it was a pinch.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience. I don't think it is a common thing that
most should worry about. (?) And I don't think you would have to go through
"several." (But others here can correct me on that.) I would think just the
initial and then Viral counts. But I'm new to this. (Is percodet those big
green gel pills? I thought they were called percocet? Is it the same thing
except I was pronouncing it wrong?)(Thanks.)

As I recall, the doc that did my biopsy gave me IV morphine or something
like that and I had very little pain.  Can't understand why your doc
didn't do something similar(?).

my experience was like Den's... they gave me a local to numb the area, but
that never does work for me....

It wasn't very painful in reality, but I was a bit tense, and it did hurt
when they started putting the needle through my ribs to get to the liver...
the doc told me that was because my ribs are very close together.  so it
hurt going in, but the actual needle into the liver 'grab' part went
quickly, and I barely jumped :)  No pain other than the going thru the ribs
part, and the sound of that was almost worse than the little bit of pain
involved :)

I do think if/when I have to have another liver biopsy done, I'll push for
some form of sedation/ more pain control.  I think I'll just be tenser
knowing that it did hurt the first time... and I do not relax easily anyway.

Hi Sara! Tell the doc that you have "lab coat" syndrome and they'll fix you
right up with some pain meds and relaxants.

I hope you are right den.  You are right about percocet (I just cant
spell) but the ones they gave me were blue - you may be thinking about
lorecet.

I only had one myself.  I was a bit tender for a day or so after the
painkiller wore off but nothing I couldn't cope with easily.  Sorry to
hear you had a rough ride of it Susan.
The worst bit was as I left the hospital.  Some kid rode his bike into
me.  He was heading for my right side too.  I turned and instinctively
protected myself by putting my arms up.  He went flying.  Poor sod.  I
helped him up and he was OK.  I just said to him that I'd just had
minor surgery in the hospital and didn't want the wound to open.  He
was fine with that.

Hi Susan,

My first biopsy in 1998 was very similar to yours. It was done by a
Hepatologist, who didn't think pain meds would be necessary, nor did he
rush to give me anything when I requested it.(screamed it)  The
shoulder pain was awful, but I also had a deep gut pain too.  My bp
dropped real low also. I also felt some fear because of Dr Jerkoffs
attitude.  It took a lot of meds to settle me down, and if not for
another doctor who took charge in recovery, I wouldn't have made it
home that night.

My last biopsy in Sept. 2005 was a breeze compared to the prior
nightmare.  I insisted this time to be pre medicated and also had a CT
guided one.  This was done by a radiologist at a different Med Center
and I told him all that went on back then, he just told me not to worry
and that I wouldn't feel a thing and I didn't.

I wrote a letter to Hospital Administration and to Dr. j.rkoff after
getting my results and told them about my experience, and I was sure to
praise Dr. Angel and his nurse. This was at a U of P in Philly. My last
experience with them.
I had the second one over here in Jersey at Lourdes in Camden, I wrote
them a nice letter commending Radiologist,Rad techs and nurses.

You may never need another, but if you do, take charge of the next one.
