Okay, this is likely going to piss off a whole bunch of people, but please
bear with me.

Ash-c is in a bit of trouble and a few (probably more) good people are not
posting because of the crap that's been happening here lately and mostly all
coming from Arclight, Ray and Whatsup Doc.

It's been pointed out before that a newly diagnosed or treatment-crisis
person coming here for much-needed help would be turned right off and never
come back.

It's not about religion because, even though some of us have wildly
different views, we respect each other enough to accept the differences and
not let it interfere with the genuine bond that we share. It's about three
ignorant, hateful, relentlessly antagonistic trolls who showed up at about
the same time and seem to have no interest in hepatitis c.

I've plonked them, but I still see their venomous words when I read a post
from someone who has replied to them. And, yeah, it's putting a negative
vibe on the whole board and I often find myself logging off rather than
enjoying my visits to ash-c and replying to posts that I otherwise would.
It's not unlike going for a nice dinner at your favourite restaurant with
close friends and having an uninvited, drunken boor who hasn't had a bath or
clean clothes for a month sit at your table and demand all the attention.
Kinda spoils the evening but, at least in the restaurant, the management
would tactfully take care of the problem.

There's no way we can control who comes to ash-c or what they post. There's
no way we can make them stop coming to ash-c, and there's no way we can turn
them into decent people.

So (and here's where I'll probably be pissing you off), I propose that we
*all* killfile them. If no one responds to their posts, no one else will
inadvertently see their posts. They can post all the crap they want, but
they will only be talking to themselves, and this will be evident to anyone
new showing up here. Any comments? If that's too harsh, how about we try it
for a month and see what happens?

Hey, what have we got to lose?

Count me in Spidey.  I've wasted too many brain cells wondering why sick
people would want to be so destructive.  I've been meaning to figure out
the newreader thingy in Outlook Express, or change to Google anyway.  I've
been using the talkaboutsupport.com forum because I like the format, but it
doesn't seem to have a killfile option.

So standby while I make the transistion and have me a plonkfest. Mute Mute

I already plonked ray and doug, arclight is next when/if he posts again.
you're right tho - the ugliness has really made this into a different place,
and responding to trolling just keeps it going on and on and on.  we're all
guilty of biting at least once in this 'session' of trolling... and we all
know better :)  the less we give what they say any importance at all, the
sooner they'll go find some other fish to bait.

Hey Spidey, I don't see why anyone would get pissed at your suggestion. Then
again I don't understand why those threads go on and on like they do. Maybe
that's what helps those folks deal with what they are going through.

It would be just as easy to ignore it and it will go away, and as my mom use
to tell me, "Dorothy, if someone gets your goat, leave your goat home"....I
never understood that when I was young, and I'm not sure I do now...lol, but
anyway, I think this flame war will die out. Newbies will be able to figure
out what threads are useful and what ones are just a lot of words. It does
appear that we lost a couple of new folks, but then again they may be busy
with other things. I do suspect that Openbookman may have split because his
post turned into a pissing contest. He even said as much and asked for it to
stop but it didn't. Hopefully he will be back.

I know when I first found this group I didn't post much because I didn't
think I had anything to contribute and most of the questions I had were
answered by reading all the threads. I still don't think I have much to
contribute, but I am getting comfortable posting and enjoying getting to
know all of you better.

This is such a good group and there are many who contribute very good
information. I love Kathy's talent for research and Greyhackles gift for
interpreting the info so that it's easier to understand. Mags is a hoot,
even though she is going through hell. Elmo always provides comic relief but
also is a wealth of information. Gordo is good about putting folks at ease
and investigating research post. I mean there is more good here than bad, we
just gotta focus more on the good and leave the bad alone.

Anyway WS, if you piss anyone off it's their problem. Your heart is in the
right place and if they don't see that then they are the ones missing out.
Now that I am thinking about this, hope I don't piss anyone off
either...lol!

I think you made a mistake there - you probably meant Doug, not Whatsup
Doc - he only made one or two posts that were out of line in the heat of
the battle. Anyway... count me among those that weren't posting. Things
really got very much out of hand, and I had to drop out so I wouldn't
fan the flames even more. The trolls (I'm wondering if they're really
separate persons and not one and the same, given the almost identical
whining and self-righteous tone) want to provoke, and they certainly
succeeded. But it takes two to tango, and way too many folks indulged
those trolls for way too long.

Nobody is going to convince anyone of anything when it comes to religion
or politics on Usenet, and endless repetition of the exact same
pseudo-arguments will turn off everybody, no matter who is repeating
what. And that goes for everyone, not just the pseudo-Christian trolls.

>[...] It's not about religion

Well, it is and it isn't. It would also help a lot if the non- or
different-believers wouldn't reflexively admonish each and every post
that mentioned God. Yes, tensions were high, but telling OpenBookman to
keep religion under wraps, just because he mentioned prayers and wished
a God Bless... that's hardly on par with the fanatic posts of Ray and
his ilk. Please, everyone, keep things in perspective. Mutual respect
also means allowing others to express their religion if it does not put
down anyone and obviously is meant well and not proselytizing. Wishing
all a God Bless does not hurt me, and I'm an atheist. Praising someone I
don't believe in doesn't hurt me as long as it doesn't put down my
belief (or non-belief). Assuming that all Christians are out to get you
because their Bible teaches certain things is paranoid and intolerant.
Christians did bad things, and so did Atheists. Remember the Crusades
and the Inquisition, but also remember Stalin and Mao.

>because, even though some of us have wildly
>different views, we respect each other enough to accept the differences and
>not let it interfere with the genuine bond that we share.

Yes, please, can we finally get back to something resembling the old
madhouse? Ash-C has been going downhill for about two months now, with
Alan's paranoid off-topic posts and the political and religious
discussions (which I'm also guilty of having taken part in). This really
has to stop, and this does mean self-discipline, not just kill-filing
and then still responding if you see something provocative reflected in
other posts. Please, please, please, let everybody's new-years
resolution be to NOT RESPOND no matter how outrageous you think the post
is. Assume that everyone else will see the trolls for what they are, and
that it doesn't need you pointing out their idiocy.

Hi Randy,

Because you've made three posts in this thread, I'll respond to this one
(the most recent) because it seems to be the friendliest :)

I'll take your word that you're not a troll, and I apologize for lumping you
in with Ray and Arclight. When I made that post, I had looked at all recent
posts by everyone and your name was real high on the troll side and real low
on the hcv interest side. So, perhaps I judged you too quickly and I hope
you won't hold it against me. Peace?

Okay, now let's kick some dragon butt!

What an "original" idea! To think that you're just now thinking about using the
killfile!? I've been using it for some time, it's just that there are a couple
of more people I need to add (like Waterspider, Gordo, kjoh, etc.). This is
probably as good a time as any to finish my killfile list!

Having someone not response to my posts with profanity, name calling, or some
other perverted remarks sounds like a NG that I would want to keep coming back
to! So killfile me all you want I'd rather you do that than post your
obscenities or try to force some ridiculous idea down my throat (e.g. Jesus
wasn't crucified, God doesn't exist, the media isn't liberal, homosexuality is
good, evolution is fact but creationism is fiction, etc.).

So anyway, I'm all for it and I'm not mad at all! Arclight, how 'bout you?

Ray: If you go back a few days worth of posts you'll see I actually
suggested all the "offended" parties do this.

I honestly can narrow it down to 3 or 4 people who have tried their
best to mark us as trolls. By their very definition of the word
they are hypocrites. But fair enough.

I can remember when this all started. It was a harmless response to a
harmless post. It's the control freaks on this board who feel
it's their personal property that have totally made a mountain out of a
mole hill.
But it's what they want. They want to come across as the good guys who
tolerate everyone and their beliefs. But in reality they
have shown they are religious bigots.

I have one thing Im regretful for. And that's my last few responses to
Cody. He yanked my chain in about the only area it can still get
yanked.
I'm not proud of my out burst of anger, but then again that was his
goal. Again, he was playing the troll and I fell for it.

I have absolutey nothing to be ashamed of. I get called names by Elmo
because he gave me a address where I might get help with my treatment
costs. I changed my mind about doing treatment again because of how far
gone I am. He calls me a name because of that. Like, how dare I not
follow up on one of
Elmo's magnanimus gestures. I really don't get it.

There is a under lying spirit prevelant around here and it's
perpetuated by a few.
It's a spirit of total rejection of any way that they don't agree with.
And they take vehement action against any offending party.

Ray, I've read your posts and replies.......You have nothing to be
ashamed of either.

God Bless.

Paul G.
Ray - 04 Jan 2006 18:24 GMT
Thanks, but I'm no saint and they have made me lose my cool on more than one
occasion too! I know that you have used restraint but that everyone has a limit
(including Christians). So anyway, I agree with you that you have nothing to be
ashamed of (there is no condemnation in Christ). Personally, I got to the point
where I just didn't care what they called me, what they said about me, what they
accused me of, or how vulgar and filthy their responses got. I only scan their
posts but I won't waste my time reading complete stupidity or profanity. The NGs
are just like Hollywood, they can take a good idea and then add gratuitous sex
and violence to it until it's ruined.

I think it's hilarious that it was your suggestion some time ago that was
ignored but NOW they come up with it like it was THIER idea. It shows the type
of "people" that we've had to deal with on a regular basis! And they call US
trolls, go figure....

But Arclight, be of good cheer! I believe that the enemy has taken a black eye
on this one and you and I are now free to offer some REAL answers where
hepatitis, cirrhosis, and stress are concerned! I'm even thinking that God has
caused this to happen so we'd have a chance to do something valuable here. I am
excited and encouraged!!!

God Bless and keep fighting the good fight bro'

Ray: Oh man, yeah I'm far from what the World would call a saint. It's
too bad people think that when we say
we're Christian they think we mean we are better than them. Nothing
could be further from the truth.

I was and still am a sinner saved by Grace.  It's nothing I've done..I
owe it all to Him....

Spirituality should be something we can talk about openly without
shame. No matter what you believe.
Instead talking about everything but is the norm.
I'm convinced we are a tri-part being..Spirit, Body, and Soul(mind)...

You can treat the body with man's medicine and you can feed the mind
with man's literature..But more often than not our spirits go
under nourished...

When we try to encourage others here with their battles....We are told
this isn't the place for spirituality. And also accused of never
offering anything worthwhile to the group. I don't understand that way
of thinking.

But to run away because some don't like the word God would be a wrong
for all those who need spiritual encouragement.

It's funny, I subscribe to other Newsgroups..arthritis one(I have
spinal stenosis), and some other non-medical groups...
People there refer to God and Jesus, and who ever they believe in
without so much as a nasty reply...

Topics like: Please pray for my husband he's really sick, come up all
the time..No one over-reacts.

Oh well...

Keep on truckin Ray

Oh wow, a female gorilla.  From my perspective that's *very* *kinky*.

Reminded me of a favorite movie, Murder by Death.

Maggie Smith and David Niven are a couple and she says "What could
somebody want with a dead body?" and he leans over and whispers in her
ear.

She wriggles in a very upperclass way and says (with a borderline tremor
in her voice, becoming subtly but obviously aroused):

"Oh, that's tacky! That's REALLY tacky!"

It's a truly great moment in a truly great film.

I've been reading a lot lately about how if you have liver problems you
should stay away from iron supplements.  Since my surgery, I have two areas
in the incision that are 'slow' healing, and the doc suggested upping my
protein intake to help the healing.  So I bought some Boost supplemental
drinks.... well, reading the label these little bottles of energy contain
25% of your DV (what's DV??) of Iron.

Am I pushing my luck drinking one of these a day for a week or two?
was thinking they'd be good during tx too, but now that I know they have the
Iron in em, I'm having second thoughts....

lots to learn, it's mind boggling.

Hi Sara.  The iron thing is a tough one.  I don't know very much about it.
I decided to avoid supplements with iron until I know more.  For extra
nutrients I have added Slimfast alot to smoothies.  I don't like the
sugar, but it doesn't have iron in it.

I just looked at the Centrum Silver label and saw the DV thing.  I don't
know what the hell that is.  Guess I'll check it out.

A tricky thing about supplements for me, and maybe others, is the iodine
content.  Because of thyroid problems.  Iodine stimulates(?) the thyroid.
So the supplements containing seaweedy stuff make me nervous too, because
of iodine content.  Plus Yuck!

Slow healing.  Bummer.  Maybe move the bod around more to get the lymph
circulating?

Hey Sara....DV is the daily value....lol! I was stumped for a while....and
then like duh! You're right, so much to learn it is mind boggling, so much
so that even the simplest things can through you for a loop.

Hey I I googled MDR+DV+vitamin+.gov and came up with a couple random items.
Just a variant on Minimum Daily Requirement:

"Bear in mind that the MDR (minimum daily requirement), MDV (minimum daily
value), DV (daily value), or whatever, is calculated to be the dose that
keeps you from overtly DYING of a nutrient deficiency. And they seem to be
trying to lower those doses all the time by using new letters on labels (it
makes our commercial foods appear to have more in them on a percentage
basis).
"I believe that the state of optimal health is unattainable at doses
approximating our MDRs. There are just too many stresses out there: bad
food, bad soil, bad water, air pollution, hormones, bug sprays, weed
killers, car exhaust, genetic manipulation, etc., etc., ad nauseum. "

"DV" corresponds to the better known "RDA" (Recommended Dietary Allowance -
aka Recommended Daily Allowance).

DV and RDA are way higher up the yardstick than the Minimum Daily Requirement,
which is, as you saw, just what's needed to keep you alive.

Thank you Grey, for thinking for me.  Now how to remember
this...DV=recommended/MDR=minimum for survival...

Ack.  What to make of this.  I don't want to give up my soy milk!  What if
I ahve a mutation in my "alpha-myosin heavy chain gene?"  Waaagh.
I found the technical abstract (below), which isn't very revealing.  Like
how many mice, and were the results statistically significant etc.  I also
found an intersting blog on the article.

A sleuth, you say, Dort?  Must have been all those Nancy Drew novels I
read as a kid :)

From Pubmed.gov :

Soy diet worsens heart disease in mice.
Stauffer BL, Konhilas JP, Luczak ED, Leinwand LA.
J Clin Invest. 2006 Jan;116(1):209-16.

We report that dietary modification from a soy-based diet to a
casein-based diet radically improves disease indicators and cardiac
function in a transgenic mouse model of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. On a
soy diet, males with a mutation in the alpha-myosin heavy chain gene
progress to dilation and heart failure. However, males fed a casein diet
no longer deteriorate to severe, dilated cardiomyopathy. Remarkably, their
LV size and contractile function are preserved. Further, this diet prevents
a number of pathologic indicators in males, including fibrosis, induction
of beta-myosin heavy chain, inactivation of glycogen synthase kinase 3beta
(GSK3beta), and caspase-3 activation.

Okay, this is likely going to piss off a whole bunch of people, but
please bear with me.
Ash-c is in a bit of trouble and a few (probably more) good people are
not posting because of the crap that's been happening here lately and
mostly all coming from Arclight, Ray and Whatsup Doc.
It's been pointed out before that a newly diagnosed or treatment-crisis
person coming here for much-needed help would be turned right off and
never come back.
It's not about religion because, even though some of us have wildly
different views, we respect each other enough to accept the differences
and not let it interfere with the genuine bond that we share. It's about
three ignorant, hateful, relentlessly antagonistic trolls who showed up
at about the same time and seem to have no interest in hepatitis c.
I've plonked them, but I still see their venomous words when I read a
post from someone who has replied to them. And, yeah, it's putting a
negative vibe on the whole board and I often find myself logging off
rather than enjoying my visits to ash-c and replying to posts that I
otherwise would. It's not unlike going for a nice dinner at your
favourite restaurant with close friends and having an uninvited, drunken
boor who hasn't had a bath or clean clothes for a month sit at your
table and demand all the attention. Kinda spoils the evening but, at
least in the restaurant, the management would tactfully take care of the
problem.
There's no way we can control who comes to ash-c or what they post.
There's no way we can make them stop coming to ash-c, and there's no way
we can turn them into decent people.
So (and here's where I'll probably be pissing you off), I propose that
we *all* killfile them. If no one responds to their posts, no one else
will inadvertently see their posts. They can post all the crap they
want, but they will only be talking to themselves, and this will be
evident to anyone new showing up here. Any comments? If that's too
harsh, how about we try it for a month and see what happens?
Hey, what have we got to lose?
