Risky business? Or not?

Waterspider - 25 Nov 2005 20:27 GMT This is something that's never sat well with me, not for moral reasons but because it just because it doesn't make any sense. It's frequently stated that having more than one sexual partner increases the risk of contracting hepatitis c. Okay, let's assume that blood-to-blood contact can occur during sex, and we all know that this is how HCV is transmitted. Now why would having two sexual partners be a risk when having just one partner isn't? Why would the risk be increased with the number of sexual partners? Am I missing something here?

Besides, the doctor told me it wasn't and he was a top liver specialist.

The part that irks me is that the negative association, i.e. sexual promiscuity and hep c, propagates the stigma associated with the disease.

Shawn - 03 Dec 2005 03:28 GMT I think C.Everett Koop had a lot to do with the attitudes that have been promulgated from the CDC. When he was in office. I always got a "Queer" feeling from him as to the fact that sump'in ai'nt right wit dat boy! Could the chin beard be a type of subconscious replacement for any genitalia related problems?? Or maybe he was just the ships wife while at sea!!! Hmmm.....

Gordo Mondragon - 25 Nov 2005 22:01 GMT Back when I was on treatment I remember this coming up, and thinking that there must be something else that people who have more partners are doing. More drugs? Rougher sex? Anal sex? More STDs? I don't think anyone has a clue.

this is what I was saying:
"Too bad that people tend to generalize while in search for answers and corelatives. If looked at from a wider perspective, those people who many tend to take more of a risk in their sexual exploits than others may also fit ne..."
and it goes onto say ... fit demographically next to the same set of folks who tended to contract Hep C through IV drug usage and needle sharing. So perhaps we should just take note that once again statistics can lie when drawn upon to support hypotheses that the data were not meant to apply. In other words, a coincidence to us but a solid fact to a cement head.

p.s. And it's a sweatshirt, not a t-shirt. It's not *that* nice here.
