Liver size

Red Dwarf - 13 Oct 2005 11:38 GMT Earlier today I watched one of those Animal planet programs(Jeff Corwin I think), and they showed a few minutes of a liver transplant surgery. I could not believe the size of the liver. It was probably from some sort of accident victim, looked pretty healthy, but huge. It was shiny and sort of liver colored,(sorry), but I was really amazed at the size of the damned thing. Apparently I did not have a clue as to the relative size of the different internal organs. It's no wonder now to me as how important the health of that particular thing is. I mean we have two kidneys etc, and I know that folks can survive with just one of them, but we have just one liver.I don't think I could watch a whole operation though, it's kind of gross. Just an observation. John in Honolulu

Red Dwarf - 19 Oct 2005 08:28 GMT Hi Sue, sorry for the lag in answering your question. I haven't been on much lately. October has not been good to me I'm afraid. Actually I really haven't felt well lately at all. But I don't think that my physical problems have any direct connection to HCV(at least I don't think so).I recently spent a week in the hospital in Honolulu with some kind of leg infection, and was constantly given anti-biotic i.v. I think they called it cellulitis, or something close. For a few days my right leg was really swollen and sore, and hot to the touch as well as painful to the touch. This was a couple of Sundays ago. By that evening I thought I should mention it to someone. I called the advice nurse, who happened to be in San Francisco, and after describing the symptoms I was told to get to the emergency room within two hours.(I hate hospitals) It was so busy there, I would have thought that a Sunday evening it would be quiet there. It was not. After extensive tests and X-rays, they admitted me. As far as hospitals go this one is well staffed, but as this was an Army base and hospital, it just seemed strange to be treated by doctors and nurses wearing B.D.U's.(that's army uniforms). I guess it was a good thing going when I did, as the ramifications of not going was scary. To make a long story short, I am bandaged in something called uuni boot on both legs from foot to knee.(at least the bandages are flesh colored). It sucks,it's hot and itchy, and I can't wait to get it off(weeks from now). Unfortunately while in the hospital in Honolulu, my Mom passed away in Boston, and I couldn't be there for the end.I had to let my two brothers handle all the details. So as you might imagine I feel guilty as well as helpless. Thank goodness I have a shrink to help deal with all this stuff. Sorry if I overwhelmed you Sue, as I didn't mean to. But you asked. Other than all this, things ore ok. How are you feeling? Oh, yeah, by the way I've always loved liver of all kinds, beef, calves, and best of all chicken livers wrapped in bacon,(yum). What's going on with you? John (hot and sweaty in Honolulu, in the low 90's.)

Red Dwarf - 19 Oct 2005 15:01 GMT Thanks Elmo, on the plus side, there are some good things happening also.I'm just having difficulty thinking of any right now.Oh yeah, my stepson Vic called me yesterday from California. He is a new dad now, and I get to see his pictures, and those of his wife and baby on the net. That reminds me that all is not sh.t. :-) That is a good thing. One life ends, and another begins. There is some kind of balance there.I guess I did some things right, but man oh man am I in some pain. The hip, the knee and both legs and feet.It should not hurt just to be alive should it? Both of my doctors tell me I'm a very strong person dealing with the level of pure physical pain I'm in. But I don't feel so strong right now.Recently I saw another orthopedic surgeon , who said he really would like to replace my hip as soon as possible, but not with these open wounds on my legs and feet, as they are portals to infection. If they ever heal, I'll see him again and try to hold him to his promise. How is it going with the new puppy? Stepped on any poop bare foot lately? That happened to me frequently with my last puppy. A Maltese. The carpet was dark colored, and in the morning my eyes were not too focused before coffee.Yuck..... the poo poo dance. lol. John

elmoemerson@webtv.net - 21 Oct 2005 02:03 GMT It's sort of like the cup being half empty or half full 'thing'. You can choose to look at life's dealt cards being alright or look at them as being shitty. Either way, it's a state of mind. Nothing other than time will take away the hurt of losing your mother, but seeing the pictures of your son's (step or not) new baby has to bring you joy. I remember giving you sh.t because you were so down on yourself, that you couldn't see any light at the end of the tunnel because of all your medical problems. Now that you seem to have beaten the dragon to death, it's time to work on the rest. Once your legs heal, get that hip replaced. I've got a feeling you'll enjoy living in paradise more once you can get around better and feel more like getting some exercise. You ARE strong, John! It's not every swinging dick that can get thru a year of tx like you just did. My hat's off to you!! Buddy is doing great! Naw, I haven't stepped in any poo poos (I"m not talking about appetizers, LOL) Buddy wouldn't think about sh.tting in the house, never has pooped in here. He did pee in the house once, but I rubbed his cute little face in it and spanked him. Hasn't peed in here since. :-) Pleasing the 'old man' seems to be a priority. Gotta love the kid!! Take care, bro. Bri Kid - 19 Oct 2005 20:48 GMT The liver is the second largest organ in the body ( after the skin ) It performs over 500 functions. A good topic to research is "liver functions" at Google or Ask Jeeves. The South Pacific huh? Ya lucky so and so. Take care . Bri
Red Dwarf - 20 Oct 2005 05:33 GMT Yeah. Thanks Bri. At least I don't have to shovel snow any more, I've done more than my share. It is nice to be here in Hawaii. I was here in the late 60's and early 70's, and knew I was destined to come back, but I also thought I would be able to enjoy the beaches and water. It has it's good points and bad.The roads and traffic system suck, and the political system is archaic. The same families that exploited the island are mostly still here and own much of the land. Being a white male I'm in the minority, and have experienced some subtle racism. Nearly everything that can be consumed is brought in by ship or plane and is much more expensive than the mainland.I knew this was the case before coming here nearly four years ago. Sometimes I long for a change of seasons, but one can plan things in advance without the weather being much of a factor. The other thing is drugs, ice(speed or methamphetamine) is every where, making for a lot of property crimes. Especially car theft. One can hardly believe that the liver performs over 500 functions. Can you list them in alphabetical order for us please? Just joking. Thanks for writing. John in Honolulu
