I learned today that it's best to take the riba after a meal.
I experimented this morning and ate the 600mg before eating.
It messed up my intestinal fauna.
That's a very bad no-no with myself. With portal systemic
encephalopaphy, my ammonia is building already. I was actually
feeling better with tx until then. I was a little weaker at times.
And few times I felt muscle soarness. But still better than when the
ammonia builds up. Heck. I couldn't get out of bed for over a year
thinking I was going to die at any moment. I just thought my liver
was shot and that was that. Didn't see a doctor at all. None of them
would see me without moneys. And of course I couldn't work. Hell,
I went two full months unable to even take a shower.
Anyways, I'm hoping I can get metamucil to do it's job one more time
for me.
Two things -
One - ALWAYS take your riba with some kind of fatty food. My MD said
that a glass of whole milk would be sufficient. If you don't you're not
going to absorb most of it and you might as well not take it at all
(it's something like 70% increase in absorption.)
I just looked up portal systemic encephalopaphy - have you talked to the
people prescribing the treatment to you what you can eat that has fat
that fits in your diet?
These also worked magic on me:
http://www.biogro.us/acidophiluspearls.html
Shop around for the best price. They were recommended by a friend and
indeed, compared to yogurt or other forms of acidophilus they were
amazing. Everything was nice and firm and easy to clean up, no OHMYGOD
IHAVETOGONOW experiences.
Something to try....

Almost exactly the numbers I saw in the Product Info sheet for Roche's version
of Ribavirin (65%).
So, although I've never been much more than a coffee-for-breakfast guy, I
always downed some peanut butter on toast before popping the morning Riba.
It probably deepens the Riba sides, but that's the price for raising the
effectivity....

man I couldn't get ten feet from a bathroom without sh.tting my pants. One
day I tried to walk around the block and did sh.t my pants. haha, I can look
back on it now and laugh, but I was so pissed at the time. I just wanted to
stay home all the time.... I got used to having a bathroom in my bedroom.
Right after stopping the treatment I went camping a couple of weeks after
the last of the riba. I slept in the back of my pickup truck. In the
morning, eyes SNAP open, OH sh.t, I'm trying to climb out of the back and
"brrrrrraaaaaaappppp".... just grab a roll of paper towels for that
one...... LOL......

When I was on tx, I took the ex out for a nice Saturday afternoon drive
in the countryside of NJ, along the Delaware River. We were going to
stop and have Mexican food at one of my favorite restaurants. About
half an hour into our drive, I sh.t my pants with diarrhea. I just
thought it was a fart. ahahahahah Needless to say, that was the end of
our adventure. (talking about embarrassing)

Thanks for the tip.

I don't have total PSE of course. The scarring of my portal areas are
just like the rest of my liver. Not total but extreme in amount.
My second breakfast (or second part of breakfast) is when I take my
riba. It always consists of real eggs, potatoes (steamed-in-oil), and
tomatoes. And sometimes a tsp of lecithin. So I'm sure I have enough
fat. But I'm going to have to look into the exact way absorption of
riba is accomplished. I studied all these things 25 years ago when I
read "The Pharmacist's Guide To Therapeutics". An expensive college
text book. If I remember correctly there are 6 ways of absorption.
Active transport, osmosis, gradient, and 3 others. Wow. I can't
believe I remember THAT much from back then. And now there are some
days I can't remember things that happened yesterday. Ammonia
poisoning is strange trip sometimes.

I'll keep it in mind if I ever need it. But metamucil worked like
magic again. If need be, I have a Lactulose prescription in the
cupboard also. I'll just nuke the hell out of the little bugs with
it. Or even raw garlic from the fridge will "slash-and-burn" the
pests. Then plant the seeds of the good fauna with a metamucil
type product. But luckily I didn't have to go to the nuclear option
this time. I just reinforced the good fauna (that weren't killed
immediately from the concentrated riba) with help from just one
metamucil capsule. The bad fauna were killed and tossed out
the back air lock within a day.

It's disturbing that your doctor didn't tell you, since it makes such a
huge difference.

LOL I think so!

I'd be interested in seeing what you find.

I'll give you another tip. Don't try eating steamed fruit puddings
:-)
I tried that in week one of tx. I spat it out and dumped the rest in
the bin.

"Steamed fruit puddings"?? I don't even know what that is. :-)
Cooking fruit is a no-no in my world. Unless absolutely required
for some reason. It's bad enough that I have to put up with freezing
because simple logistics.
