interferon maintenance

Here is a 1997 article that I dredged up searching rheumatology +
hepatitis.  The poor patients have a host of miserable extrahepatic
manifestations of HCV.    They took  3,000,000 IU of interferon alpha 3
times a week for six months and the symptoms cleared up.  I post this
because I may need to be prepared to argue for interferon maintenance if
it could make a difference in my life after standard tx.  If any of you
know the numbers, how does 3,000,000 IU 3 times a week quoted in the
article compare to the current typical tx dose of 180mcg/1mg once weekly?
Any links or info on interferon maintenance would be appreciated.  My
rheumatologist is an interested learner.  Thanks kindly.

My responses are 'well reasoned' and often reflect having done tx 3
times to get my SVR whenever I'm discussing anything related to having
hepc.  I've been up and around the block a few times in addition to
having done my homework, so occasionally I have an informed opinion, all
farts aside...
Anja and I have a different view of tx, that's ok by me.  Who's to say
what's good for the gander is good for the goose. I'm happy with the
decisions I've made, it got me an SVR and I'm willing to settle for
whatever collateral damage was done.  I feel pretty damn good today, and
I don't have a monkey hanging on my back.  In the couple of years before
I knew I had hepc, I'd get sudden unexplained moments where I felt so
fatigued that I had to rest.  My ex thought I was just being lazy,
ahahahahahah!!!!!  I haven't had a single episode like that since I
finished my last tx nor have I had to put up with any of her bullshit.
I haven't felt this good in years!!

The article you cite is no longer relevant, it's 8 years old.
Maintenance doses of peglyated interferon are a valuable alternative to
those who have failed treatment where their liver is cirrhotic or
pre-cirrhotic, as opposed to doing nothing. Effective maintenance doses
are usually one half or one third the standard dose and are normally
very well tolerated by patients.  Ribavirin is not used for maintenance,
which precludes most of the really nasty side effects of tx.  Is that
'reasonable' enough, Kathy?

It was what I was told by my spec's clinical nurse, too. Almost word for
word.  In Canada in the province where I live, iIt is now in the doctor's
studies domain, where you have to apply for it but because of the high
failure rate of combo tx geno ones, I expect it will soon become a function
sustainer while the DNA and molecular medicine catch up to us.  Shouldn't be
too long. (and it will be forever for some, unfortunately)  8-(

Yikes Elmo, did not mean to offend. That was an attempt at humor that did
not translate.  I sincerely appreciate your reply.

Sorry, I have no links or info on that. It has been mentioned in this
group before. I do remember somone saying they have tried it. I must
have missed a previous post of yours.....or maybe it is my riba
forgetfullnes , I don't remember you saying you  may need maintenance
dosage. Have you had a drop in your viral load from current treatment?
Sorry for not remembering.
My friend has not come back from vacation yet but I have worked out my
little weed like issue for the time being. Thanks for asking.
I have been really good in spirit lately. Sides are the same...little
less hair falling out. I've been a maniac though. I have been painting
fabrics for quilters and for use in quilts I am working
on............................... My words feel jumbled right now . I
guess I should say that my creativity is in overdrive. I've been taking
it for the ride and doing work I am quite happy with. here is a link to

hi Mary Ann, thanks for your reply.  Im glad to see that good creative
things are happening for you, and that your botanical situation is in
order.  I have to say that your fabric paintings are quite beautiful and
an inspiration to me.  they tweaked me to get out some watercolors and
paper. I signed up for a photobucket account, Though it will take me time
to work out the mechanics.  I dont have a digital camera or a photo
scanner. I tried pushing my 3X5 snapshots into the vent slots in my
monitor but nothing happens... :)

Interferon maintenance doesnt look like a very viable option for me, based
on the little info Ive gathered, but will ask the doc.

My main sides  today are fog, fatigue, global joint pain.  Vice grips
attached to upper intestine. Especially bad hair.

Thanks again, and also to Cactus Jammies photobucket, for the
inspiration.

Kathy, I did the maintenance dosage of Pegasys for an additional 24
weeks after stopping tx. I was taking a half dose during that time. I
might have continued, but a biopsy showed that my liver had shown little
to no change since 1992 or 1993. At the time I thought I was going to be
part of a test group doing Infergen, but having hemochromatosis kept me
from participating. I've been lucky that my liver hasn't been getting
worse, I found out my liver had progressed to cirrhosis with my first
biopsy in 1992. Good luck.

Vice Grips, that sounds nasty. I've recently started using tea tree oil
shampoo and much less hair is falling out. It even looks slightly shiny
anyway. Painting helps with the fog 'cause I can take myself away and
go with it.....Calgon........

Peace,
Mary Ann

Funny you should mention your creativity being in overdrive, Mary Ann.
I felt that way too on tx.  My opinion is that the drugs take your mind
to places it wouldn't normally travel and that the bizarre comes right
to the top.  The difficult part for me was channeling that creativity
into something meaningful.  ahahahahahha
Making smoke signals in the den, eh?  :-)

I actually slept well here last night. I didn't even take the ambien.

Yeah , I hope the creative bent lasts for a good long time after tx. It
has been pretty exciting. Definately a nice way through this fiasco.

Hope you are groovy,
Mary Ann
