Hi all,
Larry has been getting horrible leg cramps at night, possibly caused by
either the Interferon, or possibly the Procrit or Neupogin, one of the
two, we're not sure. He'll see the doctor (well, the nurse) at the end
of the month. Until then, has anyone else experienced this cramping or
have any ideas about what to do.

Amazing!  Terrible leg cramps, eh?  And Larry is going to wait til he
sees the doc again in two and a half weeks to tell him about it?  Tell
me you're kidding, Wendy.  Please.  If you're not going to call the
doctor for him, at least shove a banana in his face so you won't have to
listen to him complain.

Elmo,
I'll call the doctor, you're right. Normally I panic more about these
things. Now and then, he used to get a leg cramp here or there, nothing
I could not help him with trying to force blood into the area by
massaging his legs.  This is starting to sound like a dirty joke.....
But seriously I have no strength or stamina to help him now.  I was
scared to death the other night when he awakened with the muscular
cramping. I am not trained in massage and I didn't know what to do. I
was really alarmed. The goofball won't stop exercising!  He does eat a
banana every day, so mybe that will help. He now drinks 1/2 of his body
weight (lbs to oz) in water, 70 oz, but when he jogs a bit, he'll have
to increase. I'd better take this seriously though.

Stopping lower leg cramps as they happen.  Stand person up on flat feet,
spread feet slightly.  This could hurt.  Have patient bend over forward
trying to touch floor with palms of hands, the idea is to get leg muscles
straightened out so they don't cramp as much.  Warm the blood supply a bit
with just friction with your hands.  You ever see football players rolling
arouond out in the middle of the field screaming blue murder holding their
legs tucked in.  That is just a leg cramp, either the thigh, but more likely
the lower leg and ankle. It hurts, I know it does.  Taking selenium and
chromium as well as magnesium should be looked at, I think.  in order to
reduce sleep time cramping when most large muscle groups are relaxed or
relaxing.

Advice from low carb diet participant, taking a detour with HCV tx.
hope this helps

He may need to drink more water and consider some taking some calcium.
And as strange as it may seem, pickle juice helps.  I still have
problems with the cramping, and I stopped my injections in October.

Dwight,
Thanks. I never knew about the pickle juice.  I'm so sorry you had to
stop!!! Do you still have SVR?

I never got my viral load lower than 29,000 before it started climbing
again.  Oh well, third time will be a charm.  As far as quitting the
last time, I had already done 60+ shots and I was ready to quit for a
while.  I learned about the pickle juice from a few high school football
coaches.

Wait...you mean you finished, okay, I get it now. It's not that you
stopped because of the cramping. How long did the cramps last?  It's
very difficult when you don't understand.

Jogging is far to strenuous to be doing on tx switch to walking as there
is a lack of oxygen going on while on tx. Jogging is just asking for
troubles. I didn't jog and still had leg cramps Valium solved that
problem.                               Juanita

If your asking me, they haven't quit.  They just aren't as frequent or
severe as they were while on tx.  BTW, Elmo is right about the bananas.

Consider an electrolyte imbalance.  I had this problem.  Testing for
electrolyte imbalance was inconclusive, but a conbination of
Gatprade-type fluids, QUININE, and valium (for muscle relaxation
straightens out this side effect for me.

I had that problem too! I reviewed my diet and found that I wasn't drinking
enough fruit juice. So, I bought a case of apple juice (in those little
boxes with the straw) and have one of those every night at bedtime. Make
sure to check the ingredients on the apple juice, you don't want any
additives just juice concentrate and water. I buy a brand called "Tree Top".
Apple juice has a ton of potassium in it, so check with your doc first.
Also, I was put on a 'script of nortriptyline. I take these at bedtime also,
they make me a little drowsy. Now the cramps are completely gone!! Apple
juice is also good for keeping your bowel movements regular!  Hope this
helps!
