With a slew of new tests <g>.
ALPHA FETOPROTEIN - serum is 14.
Viral count 528mm little 1a's and rising.
LFT's both 58 (better than the 115 before tx).
I searched for an explanation for the AF and found I was either pregnant or
suffering from Down syndrome.  Some might agree about the Downieness, but
I'm sure I'm not pregnant.

Tom, Doc, I need some help here.  I'm 57 and want to last till 60 (when the
study says I have to croak).  What's the rundown on AF's ?

Steve, do like me, I'm planning on outliving all of my doctors out of
spite and then one by one visiting their graves and doing a little dance
on each of them.  :)  Just kidding of course I would never dance on
their graves, I'm Baptist, I've got something much more fun in mind for
their graves. ;)

Hi Dwight,
I have to ask what a Baptist would enjoy doing on a
Doctor's grave ?

I think I just got it... Watering the Flowers.  Pretty good. !

No one-night stand without protection? Those little pregnancy test
strips don't cost that much... ;-)

Seriously, though: Your AFP level seems normal for someone with HCV.
Levels above 500ng/ml indicate HCC (that's why your doc had it tested),
but yours is in the safe zone:

"Generally, normal levels of AFP are below 10 ng/ml. Moderate levels of
AFP (even almost up to 500 ng/ml) can be seen in patients with chronic
hepatitis. Moreover, many patients with various types of acute and
chronic liver diseases without documentable HCC can have mild or even
moderate elevations of AFP."

HCC = Hepatocellular carcinoma

And, that could still mean undetected cancer. Not likely. But, possible.
As for 500 being considered "moderate", I need to read up on that. and I
would need to read up about hcv affecting the AFP test result. Cancer
marker is the logic in the AFP test for you. They dont monitor hcv by
AFP testing. Although they may consider an Affected test result by an
outside means such as hcv. Correct me if wrong please people. Randy

You are a menace to people that are virus-hc +

Have those little people inside your delusional head finally
convinced you that your are a qualified point-n-click medico

Perhaps it would be wise if you and your pretty red shirt stick to
giving race-calls on the benefits of coffee v mint-tea enemas

Playing doctors on the internet is criminal and immoral, you should
be reported to the appropriate authorities

It means you're pregnant.  Sorry for the bad news.  Seriously, it's a
test used to detect liver cancer as well.  Anything less than 10 is
considered normal.  Above that, to 500 is midrange.  Chronic hepatitis
causes elevation in the number and yours is close enough to normal, I
wouldn't worry about it any at all.
