mercy - 04 Jan 2005 08:54 GMT Hey Group- I'll be starting treatment soon (I have 3b and will only need 24 weeks) know the possible side effects and I'm prepared for the worst with a nice little stash of buds. My real fear, though, is that i will sink into a deep depression. I've had depression since i was a child and under times of high stress it has turned psychotic- voices, paranoia, etc. I've been on anti-depressants for about 12 years and they keep most symptoms at bay. But meds have a way of diminishing in effectiveness over time and a person just has to cope with it by other means. I'm taking 20mg of lexapro and can't go higher- and i have tried other ssri drugs with about the same effect. It's not the down feelings or even the aural hallucinations I'm afraid of- it's that I'll become violent. i keep hearing about "riba rage". I'm 5'2" and age 52, not a menace to society and no match for my 6' + husband. Still- should I install restraints on my bed? = 0

Good luck with your treatment. If you are already on anti-ds than I think your prepared.

Wendela - 05 Jan 2005 02:13 GMT Mercy, Hey, depression is my bag - wish it was not. Sorry you are in the club too. I have difficulty with most meds, so I'm a bad example. A lot of people like Klonopin because it assists with restful sleep and helps with stabilizing (it's like a benzo) one's mood a bit. This works along with the SSRI. There are meds that can actually boost the effectiveness of the SSRIs also. (like Welbutrin). Don't quote me on this stuff. It takes trying several shrinks to find one that can mix a good cocktail for you. I'd try the the depression support b-board for the meds (don't recall the name of it either). Just want to offer support. I know with SSRI's I had a shrink who would cut down the amounts then increase at intervals, and who would add modd stabilizers along with them. Sounds like one med cancels out the other, but it's not the case. Wish I could take away the depression. I'm not the one that is treating. My boyfriend Larry has the Hep-C, I have the depression and CFS. He hasn't been taking the interferon for long enough to experience the depression yet. Good luck to you! -Wendy

Good luck to you! -Wendy Hi Wendy- sorry about your depression too-and i bet its a heavy bag-and tough getting someone to carry it for you. Yeah it seems you have to be a chemist to stay up with the meds. My psych doc is familar with treating hepatitis patients. In fact, he volunteers at the hepatitis clinic and passes out samples to those without medical insurance. He supplied me with free meds until this year when I was able to get on state health insurance. A great guy even though he is a republican ;-) I'm chronically fatigued too, but I don't have any other symtoms of CFS. I was hoping it would go away with the hepatitis, but several drs told me it wasn't the hepc making me tired- it was the depression. I don't know- I'm still hoping I'll have energy when I'm done with my treatment. My psych doc gives me provigil for energy- but they are samples because the state won't pay for them and he can't get many of them- so i treat them like gold. They were developed for narcolepsy and claim to be safe for the liver and kidneys. I'm such a pill-popper nowadays. lol Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. Better living through chemistry. It succeeded where brewers yeast and wheat germ smoothies failed. I cope as best I can- I'm not the woman I thought i would be by now, but I have accepted my limits and now i'm trying to work around them to make the most of what I can do. I try not to take life too seriously and take joy where i can find it- with my grandkids, my gardening, the misfortunes of my a.shole neighbor (hee hee). Just don't get too caught up in your boyfriend's care and forget about your own- if you decompensate you're no good for anybody. All the best. mercy
Wendela - 07 Jan 2005 02:25 GMT Thanks Mercy for the reminder. It's so easy to get caught up with someone else's treatment I guess instead of focusing on myself. I'm bored with my own bullshit it seems. At least some of the Hep -C information seems well defined. Your doctor does sound really good. The Provigil is supposed to be excellent. Many people with CFS take this to improve energy levels. I haven't looked into it. I've had some bad long term side effects from 2 different anti-depressants (well, one was a different class and is new) so I'm skittish about taking meds now. I hope you can stretch out the Provigil. Buy some capsules and stuff them to try it in smaller dosages if your doctor approves. I don't know what form they are in. I often have split pills up and tried to determine what the smallest effective dosage is.
Sorry about your fatigue. I guess depression itself can lead to fatigue, but HEP-C might be a contributing factor. I know you're MD's have told you otherwise. The old talk about exercising is really crucial, too, especially because it does get the endorpins going - even at lower levels. So try and force the exercise despite feeling like you crawled out from under a rock when you awaken each day. Depression affects REM cycles and I think stage 4 of sleep.
I feel better when I load up on flaxseed capsules. I don't like the fish oil. I think you're probably allowed to have those while on treatment. The Omega 3's help for some reason.
Well, best of luck to you and keep in touch. I'm so glad you have a support system. You are right about getting the good feelings where you can. I hope you don't live in a sunless city like mine. It's not been as cold here and we missed the snow, but the lack of sunshine is affecting me. I have tried sleeping at different times to trick my circadian cycle or whatever is going on. I agree about the Republican thing and the better living through chemistry. "Talking" to you makes me feel more normal. ;). -Wendy

Oddly enough, females are like males in the respect that treatment-related headache, nausea, weakness, joint aches and all those other flu-like symptoms generally overrides the desire for lovemaking. Funny, that. ; )

Funny, that. "Desire" isn't the main issue. Generally, by 48 hours post injection, I'm feeling reasonably normal... or, maybe my definition of "normal" has suffered inflation. It's more of an ability thing from our experience.
