The virus isn't even strictly-speaking a living organism, just an its-bitsy, teenie-weenie parasitic thing that kills and makes ill many people. It is to me rather arrogant to have to imagine a smaller than microscopic parasitic virus as a big fearsome creature just because it kills human beings.
Don - 10 Nov 2004 03:56 GMT >> I realize I may be fighting yet another loosing battle but I wish people >>wouldn't call this thing a dragon. Dragons are beautiful beneficent warrior [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] >parasitic virus as a big fearsome creature just because it kills human >beings. I think it is just a metaphor for a very difficult, but defeatable illness that caught on and stuck. Nothing more. Dismissing microorganisms because they are small just doesn't make sense. They are as deadly as any large creature and far more difficult to defeat. When you undertake TX you're off on a difficult battle with a formidable adversary.

It's like painting witches as broom riding ugly hags that turn little children into toads. When you demonize something that someone else see's differently than they are going to want to defend it. I understand both sides. I like dragons (loved the Ann McCaffrey books) and can't think of the virus as "a dragon" but I just accept the reference from everyone else. Turns out he's not immune to mace. It's an interesting lesson in keeping the lines between fantasy and reality unblurred.
zoe wright - 10 Nov 2004 18:28 GMT Hi Gordo National Geographic Mag. will be interested to know that you think dragons dont exist. They have dune both print and telivision articals on them. "The Kimodo Dragon". Other than that most myths have a kernil of trooth in them that started the story. I through out this bit origanly because of my afection for the mythical creature. The responce has been interesting. Zoe

I think that most myths come from what humans need to believe in order to explain a confusing, uncontrollable, dangerous world. All it takes is one person with a good imagination to come up with an idea that appeals to others.

I don't question your affection or your right to create a version of the mythological dragon that you like. I think if you did more research you'd see that your version is as valid as the one that some people use in this newsgroup - the traditional "loathsome beasts and evil enemies to humankind".

Actually dragons do exist. Maybe not the fire breathing winged creatures of mythology but what about Kimodo dragons?
And if you're so concerned with keeping everything firmly based in reality (what a boring existence that would be for me <g>) than why refer to a very real very deadly disease in mythical terms? Isn't that blurring the lines too?
I said I understood people referring to the virus as a dragon that need to be slain but I also understand people who love the "myth" of dragons being disturbed at having them portrayed as beasts. That's why I just see it as it is. A virus.

AG, I just give up. There's nothing I'm ever going to post in this newsgroup that you're not going to twist into something you object to. I really don't feel any need to play (or play into) that role for you, so good luck with your SVR and the rest of your life. I hope you become less of a bitch as the meds wear off.

or here:
"I don't question your affection or your right to create a version of the mythological dragon that you like."
Yet you accuse him of being "so concerned with keeping everything firmly based in reality", something that is nowhere in sight in any of his posts in this thread.
You are completely distorting Gordo's posts, and then complaining about your distorted interpretation. And not for the first time. What's up with that?

All AG started out with was:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's like painting witches as broom riding ugly hags that turn little children into toads. When you demonize something that someone else see's differently than they are going to want to defend it.
I understand both sides. I like dragons (loved the Ann McCaffrey books) and can't think of the virus as "a dragon" but I just accept the reference from everyone else. I say use whatever you need to get through it.
AG -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It would be foolish to argue against this opinion and under normal circumstances this wouldn't be considered inflammatory.
I didn't see any "twisting" or malice or distortion. She said personally she liked dragons but understood both viewpoints. What's to argue with that? This was frivolous and it was Gordo who got out of line with the insult. All this cause somebody says they like "dragons"? Ridiculous.

No Thomas, it went like this. Gordo said Dragons don't exist... I said "says you," with a big smiley face.
His response was...
"There's a wonderful commercial for a TV show called "Reno 911" that shows what happens when a fantasy-role-playing geek confronts a police officer with his list of "immunities". Turns out he's not immune to mace. It's an interesting lesson in keeping the lines between fantasy and reality unblurred"
I took that to mean it's dangerous for me to blurr the lines of fantasy and reality. Not a big jump especially coming from someone who has argued that believing in a "god" is dangerous.
My response was not derogatory. I just said if he is that concerned with blurring the lines of reality and fantasy than calling a real life virus after a mythical beast should also be of a concern. How is that horrible? He is the one who brought it up...with the Reno 911 analogy.
> >You are completely distorting Gordo's posts, and then complaining about > >your distorted interpretation. And not for the first time. What's up > >with that? Go back and re-read the thread. HE SAID that there is a lesson to be learned about blurring the lines between reality and fantasy. You want to give me sh.t about not being nice to Gordo go ahead. It's a little hypocritical considering what has gone on in this news group in the 6 months that I was reading it but whatever. All I ask is that you get your story straight. I didn't distort anything, Gordo's message was quite clear. Just read the last line of the post I was actually responding too.

I now see a bit better where your original remark was coming from. However, if you can't see how especially the "what a boring existence that would be for me" remark was incendiary, I have to wonder.
>Go back and re-read the thread. I did, did you? If so, you should have noticed that there was a history to Gordo's post that said that dragons don't exist: you compared them to witches. However, there is a clear difference: witches do exist (at least persons calling themselves such), dragons do not. There is a difference between defending the rights of people not to be painted in a negative manner and defending the rights of mythical beings whose feelings hardly will be hurt by any aspersions. If you blur those lines, and insist that dragons should be considered real, things become quite ridiculous. From how I read the thread, that's all Gordo wanted to point out.

Go back and read Gordo's post that supposedly is "out of line", his attribution marks are very clear. He objected to AG making remarks about his personality (and her ridiculing it):

Enough reason for Gordo's outburst when taken alone? Probably not, but there's a history.

If anyone in this group has been getting email or 'packages' from her, it's been to make herself appear real when in reality it's the same old Hoof-a.s! First off, I am on tx, something known to cause irritability. Not sure what elmo's excuse is or yours for that matter. Secondly, I wasn't being argumentative with Gordo. I was actually agreeing with both sides ...he's the one who went off the deep end (again, maybe the meds) first. Lastly, I do not nor have I ever posted as anyone here or anywhere with another log on or nick. Any idiot can check a post's source so why don't you just do that. Ohh wait...how would that fit into elmo's desire to be down right nasty. Enjoy yourselves. I will get better, and I will move on with my life no worse off for your cruelty...you on the other hand will still be here finding joy in hurting others....others on medication who come here for support. Nice. I'm sure your mother must be very proud.

JV, if you had been reading for any length of time than you would I posted last monday that I had done shot 24 of 24. I still have the last of my Ribaviran to take, which will be finished by tomorrow. So I am still on treatment but essentially finished. I know it makes it more fun for you to harass people and treat everyone that dares to disagree as some sort of troll to be ignored but that is not the case. What do you want? My doctors number? How about the label from the Riba? Would offer the redipen too but they are gone.
As for checking source code, most newsreaders allow you to first check the properties and then the message source. It shows the path a message takes from my isp to yours and will also tell you where to report abuse so while I munge my address to prevent spam, there is nothing stopping you from finding out that I am posting from an Adelphia server. I am going to bet that hoof doesn't since it's the local cable company.
Like I said, you don't really want the truth..you want to pick on people, joing elmo's circus by deciding who gets treated with some modicom of compassion and who gets kicked around. Frankly I don't care. Those of you who are taking joy in all this nastiness should be ashamed. To do this to people in a support group is the lowest of lows...but like I said. For all intense purposes I am done and don't need the support...good thing since there is very little to be had from the likes of you.

> OK! So I have a sick mind and outrageous thoughts. At least I'm sane! > ahahahahhahahahaha!!!!!!! No doubt about it, this newsgroup gets pretty bumpy sometimes. Not unexpected, all things considered. Elmo, you're a wack job (as most of my friends are) but you've done two quality things since I've been here: - consistently posted supportive responses to people's both good and bad events - several times admitted when you've gone over the top, and apologized
In my time reading usenet, I've learned that people who do these things with any regularity are rare.
You're not a f.cking saint by any means, but all people are here is the sum of what they've written. In the time I've been here that's what I've seen.
And fart jokes. Groups of gay men don't usually tell fart jokes - some butch lesbians do, but they're usually the butch lesbians who don't like being around men - and you've reminded me of what I learned when I was a kid: farts are just basically funny and a good fart story can always make me laugh.

I understand that visualization is a powerful tool in healing. with this powerful image of the devouring dragon may I suggest that a reverence for St. George might be helpful. Let us not take this whole issue as anything more than what it was intended to be, a light hearted diversion. Zoe
