I cannot believe it, two weeks after I gave a sample for an RNA viral load
check on week 12 of the tx I call the lab and ask them what is up with my
test results? The next day my Dr calls apologizing effusively telling me the
lab 's courier has lost my blood and I would have to give another, which I
did immediately. I spent half an hour talking to the lab mgr asking why it
took them TWO WEEKS before they could inform me they lost the sample TWO
WEEKS AGO! Something about their courier blah blah blah........
The mgr did promise to track this next one and call me personally when the
results were availabe for theDr.
Anyone else have an inept lab or courier like this? I still cannot believe
the lack of concern or accountability these employees seem to have. Anyway
Ifell better now!
thanx for listening,

That's pretty shabby but I see sh.t like that all the time. I was
reading an article about a doctor performing a circumcision on a
newborn boy who snipped off not just the foreskin but his whole penis.
Oops! Sorry about that. Somethings I can forgive, but that wouldn't
be one of them.

That very thing happened in an Air Force hospital I once worked in, Don.
But there was no snipping, they used a piece of equipment that used
electricity that was to burn the foreskin off. The surgery technician
didn't ground the machine properly and the surgeon didn't check it
before the procedure. Big time law suit.

BC,
Unfortunately couriers do sometimes lose specimens or pack them at the wrong
temperature, so they have to be recollected. sh.t happens.
However, the lab should have discovered the error within a couple of days.
At my lab we check the "pending" tests file at end of each shift. Specimens
sent out to a reference lab by courier are checked very closely to make sure
everything arrived, and at a temperature that would not affect the integrity
of the specimen. Problems are usually caused by computer entry errors or
interface code incompatibilites, and are resolved in minutes. Lost
specimens are rare. They have to be tracked from pick up through all
transport points, but would definitely be identified within a couple of
days.
Your lab should have called you as soon as they discovered the problem.
If this is a recurrent problem, you can complain to the lab's regulatory and
certification agencies. In the U.S. they are the Healthcare Finance
Authority (HCFA - listed under US goverment), Joint Commision on
Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations and the College of American
Pathologists. JCAHO and CAP are voluntary certifying agencies to which most
good labs belong. HCFA is the government agency that actually licenses all
laboratories in the U.S.
Good luck on your VL testing.
