I don't know about SSI. I think that's only if you are permanently
disabled but I really can't say for sure.
You can indeed receive disability if the disease or even the treatment
is preventing you from doing your normal job. First thing you do is
go to your local SDI office and pick up the form or download it
from the internet.
Than go to your doctor, tell him what the problem is. For me it was the
meds. The emotional ride was making me cranky at work (and upsetting
the whiney a.s techs) and the brain fog has set in making some of the
difficult problems harder to figure out. He will fill out his portion of
the form and you fill out your portion. Then you just mail it in.
That's as far as I have gotten <g>. Hopefully they just send me
some paperwork and a check.

If someone wanted to send you email, how would they get thru to you?
You can email me at the addy as you see it posted if you're up to it. I
promise I won't throw a hand grenade at you. :=)

There are a couple of government type disability programs. One is run
thru the state and is for short term disability, less than 6 months
duration. The other is federal Social Security disability that covers
disability of 1 year or longer. The state programs, which vary somewhat
from state to state, are easy to get and usually require your doctor
filling out one portion of a form you can get at most state offices (in
Jersey, I got mine at the unemployment office), you fill out another
portion, and your employer fills out the other. It's relatively easy to
get as long as your doctor does his part and you are two sick to work.
Federal SSDI is much harder to get and you really have to work for it,
in addition to being disabled. You have to be on your death bed to get
SSDI benefits for hepc, and I MEAN almost dead. Those who do get SSDI
that have hepc usually receive it for other problems associated with
having the disease.

John, let me direct you to these fact sheets about S.S.D.I. I am on federal
SSDI, and have been for 2 1/2 years now. These fact sheets may be the
information you are looking for. In my case, hep C was not my only problem.
The thing that seemed to clinch it for me was a detailed letter from my V.A.
doctor. Be prepared to put up with some frustration. They seem to reject
almost all of the applications the first time around. You must be
persistent. Go to the fact sheets and scroll down to disability benefits.
Good luck.

Obtaining disability with chronic active hepatitis is not easy, but a
great source to help with questions and a way to guage your eligiblity
is: Severe.net.
This site helps you to determine what you will need to prove your
disability, and offers help and tips for best outcomes. If you go
directly to the site, click on "Tables", and then navigate from there.
It also includes the Hallex Grid, advice on filling out forms, and
legal tips.
Chronic hepatitis is addressed under 5.00, Digestive diseases, which
outlines the symptoms or maladies required to qualify for disability
under that category.
