Last shot was July 31,  2003 and no trace of the little buggers. Yup, I'm
still undetectable.

ALT is 17, was 10 in May when last tested.
AST is 15, was 19
GGT is 11, was 27
ferritin is 47 and hemoglobin is good at 41.6. In fact, all my labs are
boringly normal.

Neurological pain is no longer a problem, but then I've been taking
neurontin for a few months, along with tramadol for the arthritis and the
calcified tendons in the cervical area. Going to a pain specialist has made
all the difference and I have my psychologist to thank for setting up the
initial appointment. Neither of the two medications give me any side
effects, though the neurontin did make me sleepy when I first started taking
it.

Hope all the rest of you are doing well.

Lana, good to hear from you again and glad everything is going well for
you.  Don't be a stranger.

Hi Dwight, yes things are looking up. The best thing was that I've just
completed a French course that was paid for by the government. It was 28
hours a week from mid-June till the end of September and had no problems
with either my concentration or having to spend so many hours sitting in a
classroom.

Congrats Lana,

Beating genotype 1 is a major accomplishment.

Best of luck to you in the future!

Hi Dan,
You don't know my history, but I was on a miniscule dose of IFN, so it
really was a major accomplishment. I was already negative when tested 10
weeks after starting tx.

Hi Thip,

Yes, there was a big sigh of relief when I opened the envelope with the
results. I think I can relax now. Sorry to hear that things didn't work out
for you in the IFN sweepstakes.

Great to hear from you again Lana and I'm very happy that you have
remained free of the virus - especially considering that you did some
of your tx on low doses.
I remember some of the horrible crap you went through to achieve this
SVR.
Congratulations.

Paul,
I did ALL of my tx on a tiny dose and a large part of it on an even more
miniscule dose, so it's quite amazing that I still had to go through all the
horrible crap, or that I became undetectable.

I never realised until today that you did it ALL on low doses.  A
friend of mine did most of HIS tx on low (usually half or quarter)
doses too and he cleared as well.  Mind you, he didn't have genotype 1
like you did.
When my friend got very low on tx when he was on small doses, I told
him about you (not by name) and that you cleared geno 1 on low doses.
It helped to keep him going and he cleared (he was very ill at times
and his platelets went down to 32 at one point).  So, unwittingly,
your experience has helped someone way beyond this newsgroup (my
friend does not have a computer).  I just thought you might like to
know that Lana.
I hope to be able to write something like you have at some point.  I
had my end of tx PCR a few days ago (a month after ending tx).  The
results usually take about two weeks so here's hoping.

Yes Paul, I started low (nowhere near what's recommended on Schering's
weight-based dosing chart) and then after my first labs came back a few
weeks later, my doctor put me on an even lower dose. I haven't really worked
it out, but I probably did the greater part of my tx on this tiny dose,
which would normally be considered a maintenance dose for those who had
failed tx but continue taking IFN to arrest further fibrosis.

I'm glad your friend cleared. Someone else told me that he had heard of
people clearing on very small doses. What's interesting is that these small
doses seem to generate enormous side effects, so I'm wondering whether some
of us are just naturally more sensitive to IFN.

Congratulations on finishing tx and here's hoping that you will be dancing
around doing the "undie" dance in a couple of weeks for "undie-tectable!"

Hi Doc,

Hugs and kisses to you to or "bisous" as we say here in France. I see
there's a whole new crop of people here now getting acquainted with the joys
of  tx.

To stay in touch, just make the necessary changes to my e-mail address--et
voila!

Great new Fonzz! It's nice to know that so many of us going through tx at

Fantastic news Lana!  I'm so happy for you!!  How's the sarcoidosis
nuisance?
I do my six months post-tx viral load in a few weeks.  Hoping to follow in
your footsteps.

Hi Thom,

The sarcoidosis is gone. I'm left with one scar in the crook of my left arm
and two on my right--much better than the ugly lumps I had from the
sarcoidosis. Everything is under control except for the damage I suffered to
the optic nerve. I have an annual appointment to see the ophthalmologist
coming up in October. Hopefully, there will be no progression.

I'm betting you will still be negative at the six-month marker.

Hi hc,
I've been lurking periodically.   Not much to say, I guess.  I felt great
for a few months post-tx.  The last  couple of months not so good.  All of
the joint aches and fatigue of pre-tx seem to be back.  Liver enzymes are
slightly increased, but blood counts are back to normal.  I've got a few
more weeks to go before the six month viral load check, so I won't worry
about it until I do that test.
It doesn't help that I'm back to my usual 10-14 hour days and take-home
paperwork.  Our workload is up 27% and I've had four techs leave in the past
6 months.  Our hospital is applying for Critical Access status with Medicare
and, of course, that means a ton more paperwork to prove our lab can do all
the stuff we've been doing for the past 30 years.

The good news is my son got married last month to a wonderful gal whom we
all love.  She comes with a 13 year old son;  a great kid who has also been
totally absorbed into the family.  So now I'm an instant Grandpa!
What's the news from your son?  I hope he and his unit are safe and sound.
Keep in touch.

Congrats on the marriage and the "Grandpa" thing!!! My son is in Baghdad and
will be there until May 2005. His unit is not allowed to leave the base so
that is good news for the both of us.
I went to 8 hour days, 5 days a week after I went back to work and that
works real good for me. I don't have to do weekend call anymore and that's
even better. I do just one day a week now.
Good luck with all that paperwork stuff. We're getting ready for JACHO in
Dec.
Take care!

Hi Russ,

Great news about your thyroid. Here's hoping that congratulations will be in

Hi Spidey,

Thanks for the encouragement.
