Dating and hep c

Hello all,
I have had hep c for at least 12 years now. Last year I went through
Peg/riba tx and the dragon is still with me. My V load went down for awhile
and then popped right back up.I had a liver biopsy, and the doc said that I
just have mild inflammation.

I feel human again after the treatment, and I'm starting to date again. The
first woman that I went out with freaked out when I told her about the hep,
and It seems like the relationship is definitly tainted now. The info about
hep now scares the sh.t out of people.  I am dating a different woman now,
and the it's getting to the point (sexually)  where I'm going to have to
tell her about the hep. Does anyone have any advice about how to handle this
situation? I want to be prepared this time with reliable information so she
can understand more about the virus and not freak. Help please.....

Thanks
David

Hi David,

First educate her about the disease as much as you can, before she asks you why
you're telling her all this, then let her know. If she is a good woman, a
bright woman, it won't scare her off. Build your defense with some back up on
the almost imposibility of sexually transferring the disease.

Good Luck,

Kim

hi,

I am married w/ 3 kids...my wife doesn't have hep. The only thing the doc
told me don't share razors/toothbrushes.

It's a bum deal.  I don't care what anyone says, telling someone about
your hep that you want to have sex with ruins it unless you've already
had a long-standing relationship with them that they haven't contracted
the disease from you.  Your best bet is to date someone that's in the
same boat as you.  Obviously, you need to be up front about your disease
with people you want to be intimate with.  Good luck!

Well put, Doc, I couldn't have said it better myself!
Sadly, too many partners bail after the HCV+ dx comes down so the odds of
starting a new one with that little detail added aren't great, because of
the stigma caused by the rampant misinformation about the disease.
And that ain't gonna change before New Year's Eve!
And, yup, it's up to all of us to educate the masses.
I like your idea about seeking others with hep C; I've met more single,
elegible men through hep C than any other way I can think of, except maybe
when I was slinging beer... <g>

in the long run, honesty will win. I was/am upfront about my health status.
for me it 's just easier to tell the truth then be deceiving.

My friend Lee, whom I see as a friend now and then, we were dating and when
I told her I thought that was it, vamoose!!!

But I gave her the info and she made her own choice and stayed with me. At
least for a year, we later parted as friends.

I guess you need to follow your heart in this matter....

Get some pamphlets or download information about HEP-C.  Not
just how it is contracted or spread but also about the disease itself.
When you tell her, offer her the written literature.  She is going to
want to be insured of a few things.  That her risk of getting it from
you is almost non existent (unless you are hypodermic buddies :-)
and that your risk of getting sick and dying on her is also slim
considering your current diagnosis.  It's not just the idea of getting
something that scares us..it's the idea that we could fall for someone
who already has a death sentence...or at least a more definite one
than we all have.  Just be upfront.  Only ignorance is going to cause
someone to run from a relationship and really...who wants to be
in a relationship with someone who chooses to remain ignorant?

have hep c also. Yahoo news groups has a couple hep c singles groups. I
least were all educated about it. It has to be difficult for a non-heppy to

Another site (like match.com) is :

I'm SVR  (over 1 year), and primarilly date heppers and past heppers.

There is no way on earth I am going to start calling myself
a "hepper".   I'll be damned if I am going to let some disease
define me...especially once I am cured of it<g>.  If
your clear for over a year (what exactly does SVR stand for?)
then in my mind you don't have it..period and certainly can't
pass it.  I don't have to tell people I had the measles once
and they are much more contagious.  I won't hide the
fact, it's something that I experienced like anything else
but I won't feel compelled to reveal it.

I do however let any guy I am dating know that I
don't cook.  Somethings they have a right to know.

My doctor, who so far has been dead on right about everything he's
told me, said that if you're still clear 90 after treatment that you
do indeed have a viral count of *0* and are not infectious.  He
further explained that if you do have two or three cells floating
around after treatment, even though you were undetected at six months,
that the virus will come back with a vengeance and show up as such 90
days after treatment.

I would say then, that for those worried about that one in a million
chance of infecting someone through sex, that the 90 days after
treatment test should allay those fears if you're still undetected.

Point taken, and I totally agree. I *am*cured AG.  Call me (us) what you
want..I'm also active in the hepper community, and enjoy the company of
those I can readily communicate with. It's just easier. I love to talk and
joke around about tx - now that it's in the past! See my post in the other
dating thread..... I'm on the regular match.com, and I don't make  hep an
issue - but then the type of woman who is attracted to me , and vice versa,
is open minded and educated- in the arts, music, politics, religion, fine
foods, working out, and health- infectious diseases included........I can
only hope...
I'm a bit too serious for my own good......WTF

Mild sides,

No offense but today is one of those days I wish I didn't
know any of you. It's one of those times when everything
seems totally unfair, life sucks and it feels like it's getting
worse rather than better.

I am sick of being too hot, too flushed.  I am tired
of always having a headache.  Everyone at work
and everyone on the road is irritating .. damn techs
can't turn on a light anymore without interrupting me
for instructions.    The last 4 years have been one
upset after another and as if I didn't have enough
strikes against me my hair is falling out.  My one
vanity.. pisses me off to no end.  Someday I may look
back and consider this positive but not today.

You're a lucky guy, David.  All you lost was your lifestyle
(temporarily?).  You didn't lose your 'life'.  Take some time out of
feeling sorry for yourself and think about all your fellow warriors who
lost the war and don't have a lifestyle left to lose.  Then try to find
something postive in your life that you can build a new and even more
pleasant lifesyle on.  Things are only as bad as you think they are.

Sounds like you are having a bad day AG.  I'm sorry.  I had been losing a
lot of hair, and hair had quit growing altogether.....until I finally got
sufficient thyroid meds.  Now, all that hair that stopped growing has come
back in.
I had lost the last 1/3 of my eyebrows.  Only problem is, when they grew
back in, they grew in so they stick straight up.  Now what is that all
about!  Got to find my scissors.

Thanks everyone.  Yesterday was one of those days.
First time I noticed significant hair in my brush and
work was just nuts.  Good thing my office is isolated,
gives me a place to hide out for a good cry.

I allow myself those pity parties.  I know the experts
tell you not to "feel " this way or that, to look at the
bright side..yada yada.  But you feel what you feel.
Personally it works for me to acknowledge those feelings,
even wallow in them for a very short time than figure out
what to do about it.  It doesn't help to feel sorry for
yourself but that doesn't mean you can't so long as you
keep it short and then decide what will help.

I'm going to make sure my 12 week labs on Thursday
check my thyroid.  Thanks for the tip.

I'm also going to make an appointment at a salon for
a scalp treatment and a new cut.  Then I am going to
get some chocolate!  :-)

Thanks again, today I am glad to know you all.

What a weird feeling, I don't know whether to laugh or not.

Unless your patient is willing, fondling her breasts might make you *very*

how true, none of us would have been acquainted if not for having HCV.
In some ways this experience has had some positive moments!!
No offense but today is one of those days I wish I didn't know any of
you. It's one of those times when everything seems totally unfair, life
sucks and it feels like it's getting worse rather than better.
I am sick of being too hot, too flushed. I am tired of always having a
headache. Everyone at work and everyone on the road is irritating ..
damn techs can't turn on a light anymore without interrupting me for
instructions.   The last 4 years have been one upset after another and
as if I didn't have enough strikes against me my hair is falling out. My
one vanity.. pisses me off to no end. Someday I may look back and
consider this positive but not today.

How come every time you say you are leaving the ng, you come back a week
later
crazier than ever? ahhhhhhhheeeee....
Did you ever talk/write to Stresla? I was looking at Dez's company web site
to see if they mentioned anything about his passing, but nooooooo- what do
you expect from
Haliburton? A-holes....
I'd play more if I had some buds that liked bluegrass around here. Let's
see, my son
is a junkie grunge fan (Nirvana, Sublime etc), all my friends (the ferrets
and the guy in the cube next to me) like Neil Young and Karen Carpenter..so
when you get over o Denver, bring the acoustic, and we'll blister up our
fingers.... are you anywhere near Bagnell Dam? ....it's on the lake of the
Ozarks MO.  My brother used to work at the
Tantara Resort there....

I merely took a day or two off this last time so that I could perform
community service for my transgressions.
I'm less than an hour south of Bagnell Dam.  Will most certainly bring
the acoustic next time I"m out to Denver.  You're always welcome to
visit here.  There's alot of bluegrass in this neck of the woods.  :-)

Hey, it's tough; however, not telling a prospective partner would be
highly unethical.  You don't have to blurt it on a first date...
unless you plan sex on the first date.  In that case, just get a
decent prostitute.  Personally, I recommend masturbation instead.
It's cheaper, less time consuming, and more sanitary.
