The situation is somewhat better - I failed standard Interferon/Riba as
well, but went through another round with Peg-Intron and Riba a year
ago, and cleared the virus. The side effects are just as bad, however,
and the success rate for genotype 1 is somewhere around 50% overall. Not
a revolutionary new treatment (that's still 5 years down the road at the
earliest), but an improvement over the old one (that was about 30%
successful).

Hi Harrie.
You don't say whether your previous treatment was the 3 times a week
interferon injection or the once a week pegylated interferon
injection.  If you already did the 3 times a week treatment (+riba)
you may be able to try the once a week pegylated treatment. I
understand that the side effects are (for many people but not all)
less severe than the previous treatment.
Alternatively, if you are able to wait longer, there will probably be
gentler treatments around.  The signs look hopeful for replacing
ribavirin with viramidine in the next few years which would help with
some side effects but a non-interferon based treatment is probably
still some way away.

You may want to see about trying the once a week pegylated interferon
treatment then Harrie.  Some people have said that the side effects
are easier to cope with than the old 3 times a week interferon.  Also,
I believe that there may be more chance of a succesful outcome with
the pegylated treatment.  I cannot speak from experience as I am on my
first (and hopefully last) attempt to clear this virus.  I never did
the 3 times a week tx.

Hello Harrie,
I too am a re-lapser. I finished the Peg-Inter/ Rivab but the virus is back.
I go back to the doctor next month and will set up a biopsy to check my
liver. Last biopsy was 2 years ago and I was stage 3. In the mean time, I
guess we just hurry up and wait!

The best treatment I have read about so far is the two dose per week
Peg-Inter with rivbr but its not approved. read hear about it
http://www.natap.org/2004/DDW/ddw_04.htm

In the mean time ride your bike to the windmill or stick your finger in the
dike. Good luck.

At least I suggested something else for him to check out. :-)  Besides,
sometimes it does people good to take the bull by the horns for
themselves.  He'll learn more that way.  I'm not a jock strap, ya know.

They have found they have much better results / clearing virus .. IF .. they
have addressed the elevated iron levels commonly found in those with hepatitis
C.

Did your doctor assess your iron load before treatment with the drug
combination .. ?
