Am adding a printer to my computer and am supposed to turn off my
anti-virus program to do it.  How do I do it?  I tried but don't even
seen anything on my list of programs that indicates there is an
anti-virus program installed.  HELP, please!

It would help to know what AV program you use :-) There should be an  icon
next to your clock. Most just need a right click on the icon next to your
clock and choose whatever is similiar to "virus scanner" or "auto file
check".

You should always disable your AV when you're installing something to avoid
a corrupt install.

Thanks for getting back to me right away, Cody.  There are five icons
next to my clock, none of which are what you described.  I'm not sure if
the guy who sold me the computer installed the disc that has my Norton
anti-virus or not?  It's not listed on my programs menu.

Then you had better load it in before you connect to the internet or you
be sorry.
Are you sure it is Norton and not McAfee?
Should be listed in your programs after you click on the start to pull
up the menus.

That's probably why I got a virus within 30 minutes after going on-line
6 months ago.  Guess the guy I got the computer from set up every other
program but the Norton disc.  Since I have no AV icon at the bottom
right and because I don't see Norton listed on the menu for programs, is
it safe to assume there's Norton isn't turned on?  Should I finish
setting up my printer before running the Norton disc?

Yes, but don't run the Norton disc unless you like having crap on your
computer and, on top of it, have to pay a fee to Norton every year.

Are you sure an anti-virus is installed???? If not go ahead and install your
printer. Take a look at your "control panel", there is an icon there to "Add
or Remove Programs". Scroll through that for info on whats been installed.

If you have the Norton CD do the following.
Pull your internet connecton cable (phone line, Cat5), turn in your PC,  go
to control panel, add remove programs, and uninstall all of the norton
progams listed.  Reboot the PC and reinstall Norton.

Elmer before you do any add or remove programs, check to see if your
system came with a system restore or go back feature.
if it does you need to set up a restore point in the event that you lose
some stuff.
look under programs, accessories, system tools.  Especially if you
don't' have a cd for installed software.
also check to see if you have that system restore disk.
if you don't you may wind up on the phone for hours waiting for a
technician or your puter will be back in the shop.

Then don't worry.  I thought you said earlier you didn't' have the
norton disc.
I did go out and buy one back in 2000, but the system doesn't really
recognize it the way the one that came with the set up does. i used it
on my old puter to replace mcafee

I don't have a norton disk. it is on my system restore or other discs
that came with my puter.

Take the Norton disk and either hang it from the rearview mirror, or use it as
a *coffee* mug stand. They are also useful for keeping birds off your seed beds.

He's right about this. Like I said, back when Peter Norton was in charge, it
was a good program and his desktop for Win 3x was pretty groovy too. Now
it's symantec just squeezing as much money out of the name that they can.

NOT Norton! Get AVG at http://www.grisoft.com Update it after installing it.

There's a free Sygate firewall here: http://www.sygate.com Look for the
Personal Free Solution; don't pay for one. Download and install AdAware
(www.lavasoftusa.com), Spybot, Search and Destroy
(http://www.safer-networking.org/), SpywareGuard
(http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html) and SpywareBlaster
(http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) Check for updates on
all of them after downloading. All, escept the firewall, will have updates.
Read the help section in all of them.

Good luck with your computer, Elmo, and, sincerely, I am happy that your
third round of treatment got rid of that non computer virus ...

You just did. Yes, you have to keep everything up-to-date. You should update
your AV every day and the others at least once a week. Having *anything*
update itself is risky.

The pro side of a subscription  service is that I don't have get busy
doing something and take the time to update the program.
He also needs to set up a daily virus scan and also a disk defrag at
least once a week to keep the data in a tight bundle on the hard drive.
And a scan disk at least once a week too!

whoops sorry the right click and look for properties only works on
files, doesn't appear to work on programs, instead a right click gives
you open the program.

Maybe you dont' have it set up top show in the task bar.  find a place
on the task bar that doesn't have any icons on it and do a right click,
then take a look at what you have in there. Under properties, advanced
you can add or remove programs that you want to show or not show in your
task bar.
also did you find it under search for files and folders by using the
*.nav search.
if you have one of the other you need to search under their file
extensions using the wildcard *.
But what do I know, I have only taken one computer course in my life and
that was DOS 2.0

your best defense is to delete any emails from someone you don't know. Who
is your service provider?? Do you have broadband? My service provider has a
built in spam/virus filter called "Postini". I get a virus just about
everyday but it never reaches my computer, it's stopped with the Postini
thing.

Other Internet providers may have something similar.

wow, you're ready to hit the road eh?

A lot of spam gets in your inbox and it won't even have your name or email
addy. It's easy to look at the list in your inbox. If it don't have your
name or address on it, sh.t can it. Like you said, you know who you have
given out your email too. I use filters to weed out any email that DOES NOT
have my name on it. Those are killed at the ISP servers.

I always keep a throwaway address like yahoo.com if I need to register to
get into some site. I sure never used my real address. I use a email
forwarding service with my domain www.tannersacre.com  so I can change the
username anytime. Plus if I move I'll always have the tannersacre.com
address as I can redirect my email anywhere I want. It's only 30 bucks a
year.

To be truthful, I only had one bad incident, rather funny one, with my
computer and malware.

About 3 years ago I was living with this gal, well she got off on porn. My
self being a "hands on" guy don't really get into that. But we were feeling
frisky and off on the computer we went looking for nasty pics, hahaha....
Well I wasn't paying close attention, I thought I was downloading a video,
instead I installed some "please pay with credit card" to continue bullshit.
No way, so I uninstalled it. Up pops this message window in German, of
course I haven't a clue, clicked Da, and my puter freezes..

I reboot and she's dead man. What ever I installed wiped both of my hard
drives. Boot sectors, everything. Most of my stuff I keep backed up on cd's
so it wasn't to horrible, just a pain in the a.s to reinstall everything. So
much for looking at porn, I told her to get her own f.cking computer!!!!
Nobody uses my machine but me.

I don't install NOTHING free from the internet. Programs like Kaza that
install bullshit popup ads that come out of the blue... Kids are the worst,
they will trash a computer downloading crapware in a hurry. I quit working
on friends computers. Always some virus or malware f.cking things up and me
spending hours cleaning up some machine for free. Maybe if I charge a $100
they will quit calling me.

When you get to Branson and if you decide to get broadband, get a DSL/cable
router with hardware firewall. They are nice though I prefer the Linksys
brand over the US Robotics.

I run windows 2000 sp4 with Norton AV 2002, DSL through a US Robotics
wireless router. I leave my computer on 24/7 and I never have any problems
except for the above incident, which was my own damn fault.

shot 43 down the hatch, yum,yum..... 5 more to go.....

My college fraternity house rented 3 rooms right on Bourbon St. back in
1970 and about 65 people stayed in those 3 rooms.  A couple of the guys
got to find out how intolerant the NOPD can be.  Another guy picked up
one of the dancers in a bar, took her home for some fun only to find out
the gal had a penis.  My best friend got 'bounced' pretty good when he
tried to grab the girl swinging in and out of the window at that club on
Bourbon St.  It was a 5 day drunk.  Coming home from NO, a group of us
in a VW microbus were driving thru Mississippi late at night.  Someone
asked if we were driving uphill or downhill.  We stopped the microbus
right in the middle of the highway, got out and we all took a leak to
see which way the urine ran.  That way we knew we were going uphill.

The question, apparently, is if you have an AV program or not. Usually, if
you bought the computer at a store rather than building it yourself, they
"give" you an AV program and it would be in the Programs Files. What's
sitting next to your clock?

So should I be very worried or just a little worried?
The computer icon is next to my clock, then two other programs, then the
firewall then the AV then the sound and some plug icon.

If he has his start bar on auto hide, he needs to move his mouse down to
where his bar is to find the clock.
I have been known to move the bar to the top or side of my screen
though.  I don't think he knows that trick yet.

Grissoft is a good program, I agree and the other free firewall that you
mentioned months ago is also a good one.
What is the name of it?

I don't have a disk for my anti virus either elmer so if you are
reading, run a search in files on C Drive and see if you can find it.
Also if your computer came with a system restoration disk, you might try
that.  if i were you i would call the number for technical assistance

if you run a search on c drive put in *.nav in the search window and if

I've got a cute red icon saying *spywareguard* next to my clock.
Then a pretty green triangle, a white bone, a square, a shield, and a pretty
red K. It sure beats looking at Thomas's pretty red shirt.

Do a Trojan search by clicking on search and typing in **.exe.

Then delete all that you find, and all your computer problems will be gone.
Some will ask if you are sure you want to delete these files, do it anyway.

might believe me ;-)

I don't know Lynne. I can make a computer do lots of things but I remain a

anything else. Now you have told me differently I will only type one *.
Thank you.

Now if I could only learn some java script wildcards, I may be able to
get into the netscape header through dos and add the
x-header-no-archive: command to their script.
It close d me out because I didn't' know their password and wouldn't
allow me to write to their script.
I don't think I am asking for too much here except the ability to
control when my posts are archived.

The question, apparently, is if you have an AV program or not. Usually,
if you bought the computer at a store rather than building it yourself,
they "give" you an AV program and it would be in the Programs Files.

Do a Trojan search by clicking on search and typing in **.exe. Then
delete all that you find, and all your computer problems will be gone.
Some will ask if you are sure you want to delete these files, do it
anyway.

Right!! Especially since he shouldn't strike a match near his bottom.

For the software, for the software ...

General rule: gonna install some software? Disable your AV. If you think
what you're installing might have a virus, check it before installing it.

Recently, MS put some new critical updates on their Windows Update site.
Thousands downloaded and installed it automatically with their AV file scan
enabled and now are trying to sort out the fact that their Outlook
Express/Outlook doesn't work anymore.

SO there it is then. It isn't right. And once again microsoft has proved it
is a big dumb company.

I am sorry but if hardware can be plug and play, software ought to as well.

But unfortunately the world just isn't set up for 'ought to' reasoning.
What Alias is telling you is correct.
I am not certain how AV programs work, but if they see something they
have a problem with it seems to me that they will discard some of the
program if not all of it.  So all the features will not work with one
another.  After you load the software, the AV and the fire walls will
run their search for whatever and you can then ok their use so every one
is a happy camper.

You should disable it if you install a program in Linux, too. It's the AV
programs that don't know they shouldn't be checking every file. Blame them.
Windows does fine without them :-) Meanwhile, being as neither you nor I can
have any substantial effect on any of those companies, we can learn how to
deal with it or give up computing.

Course it does provide thousands of techs all over the world with clients
who need to get into their Outlook Express and, of course, don't have it
backed up.

Sure but Microsoft is a BDC becauise it did not test out what would happen
before it released the downloads. And Sure the AV companies ought to work
together with the product comnpoanies to see that this does nt happen. But I
am stumped a bit, what is the AV looking for and why would they corrupt
anything?

I just installed Linux. Which is a hoot and a hollar. Elmo probally has XP
home edition.

Heard about techs being all over the world. Used to be a lot more of them
here in US.

It's the software that comes with the printer, Elmo, not the printer itself.

this is working out well.  I didn't need the copier, as i have one, but
it helps to have a back up.  and when it copies docs, they look like
they are laser not ink jet quality.

I have a Lexmark scanner/printer/copier and it doesn't take up much space
and you can get ink and syringes to cut down on the ink cost to six buck for
about six cartridges. Yes, they come with gloves so you won't get ink on
your skin if you f.ck up :-)

HP printers aren't too bad. Just don't ever buy their computers. I believe
you can get a syringe type ink kit for them too.

Never thought you'd be considering syringes again, eh?

Did you install an anti-virus program? If you didn't then there isn't one there
and if you did then what is it called?

I suspect you haven't got one and so you don't need to turn it off.

Your windows manager should tell you what processes are running.

If you need a free AV then http://www.grisoft.com is the place.

Please don't bother w
