I want to thank all my freinds and especially my Higher Power whom I
choose to call God for helping me thru this year of tx....I have 2 shots
left to complete my full year of Peg/pills to fight "the dragon"...Which
as of my last lab test....I have KILLED!! (God-willing-Just For
Today)...IT CAN BE DONE!!  It's been pure hell but I made it....My
viral-load went down from 10,800.00 to less than <10........And i've
taken breaks throughout the yr. recomended by my doctor (at times the
side got so bad I had to take a rest)...Yes and I am Genotype A......
For the people just starting, give time-time,it can be arrested and
recovery is then possible..........Love u guys        Rob in Ft.Lauderdale

That's GREAT that you've been able to make it this far - and still
undetectable, too! CONGRATULATIONS!

I am genuinely pleased that you seem to have cleared the virus Rob.  I
hope to as well.  I'm not trying to be inflammatory but I wonder where
my friend's higher power (who he also called God) was when he needed
that higher power most (my friend died from hep c).
Still, ashes to ashes .....................

I've no wish to get into a negative debate about such stuff, but I
could not believe in a God that seems to give life or death on the
roll of a dice.  I am happier believing in the random nature of such
things.
Please note that I am not disrespecting anyones right to believe as
they wish.

No thanks are necessary, Paul.  I respect your right to see the world
the way you want to, as well.  Besides, we're all on the same side
anyway.  Our enemy is The Dragon.

Paul, sorry to hear about your friend. I was just wondering though,
when you say he died from hep c, was it some complication of
cirrhosis, like a blood vessel connecting to the liver bleeding, or
how did hep c kill him?  If you don't mind me asking...

Yes Don. It is OK to ask.
The doctors never reached a definite conclusion about this.  My own
mind has changed several times as his widow has let a bit more
information trickle out (I haven't pushed the pace over this for
obvious reasons).
The bare, basic details are that his virus was undetectable at 6
months (he had a geno 1 so 48 weeks tx).  He had pretty bad sides all
the way through but, around 7 months into tx, he became extremely
breathless while climbing some steps.  He went back to the doctor who
ran tests on him.  I presume that these tests consisted of checking
his blood cell count and platelets in view of the breathlessness.
Anyway, the tests revealed nothing wrong.  Two or three weeks later he
was unable to hold down his food and he was taken to hospital by
ambulance.  I hadn't seen him for several weeks at that time.  When I
visited in hospital, his skin and eye whites had yellowed - probably
indicating that hepatitis had become active.  With my limited
knowledge of such things, I assumed that the hepatitis was auto-immune
hep due to his earlier negative PCR test.  At that time, I wasn't
aware that hep-c could return while on tx.  He got worse over the next
week or so until they took him into the intensive care unit, knocked
him out, and put him on a respirator.  The last two or three days, he
was only alive on a technicality.  While on life support his liver
stopped working and then his kidneys.
It was only recently that his widow mentioned that hep-c virus was in
his blood again before he died.  By then, I was aware that the virus
can occasionally return while on tx.  I have heard that it can mutate
and overcome the interferon. When this happens, the virus *can* bounce
back with a vengeance.  It is also possible that his diabetes
exacerbated the situation.  For a while, I even wondered if the
inteferon had caused the renal failure as it is documented (though not
well publicised) that this can rarely happen.
It has been painful to write this but it's OK Don.  Grief, for me, is
a process that comes and goes and has no smooth path.  It's OK to feel
as it means I'm alive.  Also, the tx I'm on tends to amplify feelings
a lot.
Thank you for asking Don.

Paul, that story reinforces my last summers decision to treat this virus.
Though my BCLD said I "didn't" have to do treatment, outside of enduring the
shitty side affects, I couldn't see a reason not to treat it. I had a biopsy
last June, mild inflammation, stage one fibrosis.

I'll be 49 here in a couple of weeks, and I really would like to enjoy my
retirement as healthy as I can be. I figured it was better to kill the
dragon now then wait till I had other possible health problems on top of
having HCV.

Thanks for sharing that story.

That's OK Russ.  I believe that it is right for people to be aware of
all the possible outcomes - even the unlikely ones.  I took pretty
much the same view as you about treating the disease while still in
otherwise good health.  My decision was made easier by discovering
that I had geno 2 and because my liver had sustained more damage than
yours - though still a good few years away from cirrhosis apparently.
I am in week 7/24 of tx.  Im OK with it but it does bite a bit more
over the past week.  I'm still doing a lot better than many I've known
to do this tx.

Didn't Thomas and his *pretty red shirt* warn you about that one?
