Julie - 23 Mar 2004 04:03 GMT Hey Susie, I have been thinking about you and wondered how your handling that first shot. Mine begin Wednesday instead of today so I will be a few days behind you. Kill the Dragon, Julie
Susie Quill - 23 Mar 2004 12:09 GMT Julie, I'd been thinking about you too! I'm actually starting Friday here,(trying to work week-days) which will be your Thursday. So, actually, if you are starting your Wednesday, that will be my Thursday. I'll be a couple days behind you..
Hope you do well. I'm nervous. Took my favorite quilt to be cleaned, bought a body pillow for comfort and am having pillow cases made for it. Got a disability card for my car. Anything I can think of to make myself as comfortable as possible. Still have to drop taxes off. Otherwise, I think I'm as ready as I'm going to get. Was wondering about you and all those projects you said you were trying to finish up. I'll check in to see how you are doing and I'll post after I start too. Oh, I wanted to start a journal about this trip. Guess I better pick a book up tomorrow. Thought it might help me to keep things focused. We are going in to battle, and we will be victorious. Susie

I know a lot of people who started journals while on tx. None of em ever kept up with it tho, too spaced out after a few months. A list of questions for the doc and another list of your side effects is a good idea.
Get yourself a motorcycle or football helmet for wear around the house and when you go out. You can take it off when you go to bed at night, but make sure you wear it in the bathroom and when showering. It's a dangerous place if you're on tx. Hip pads might not be a bad idea either. Don't bother with 'postems' to remind you of stuff. You won't be able to find them all and won't care anyway. Make sure there's plenty of TP in the house!!

I used to wear my crash helmet in bed too but I bought a headboard and don't need it now. Also, don't forget to have airbags fitted to the *outside* of your car as well. It really eases the nerves when driving. Alternatively, you could do like they do on boats and just hang some spare tyres around it.

Susie Quill - 24 Mar 2004 00:00 GMT Hey Paul! I am concerned about driving to and from work. At least, it is only a 10-15 minute drive now. Before moving here, I had an hour drive one way to work. I frequently had to pull over to the side of the road to take a nap on the way home. Also would occasionally go out to my car to take a nap at lunch. The fatigue isn't that bad now....or at least it is only a 15 minute drive.
There is an extra office where I am at now that I use for clinical work. I figure I can hole up in their at lunch time and nap and not be bothered. I have about the only key to it. Maybe I should take an alarm clock though just in case I get in to a nap real well. Hmmmm.

A semi woke me up with his air horn or I might have hurt someone. This happened about a week after I came real close to beating up one of my customers. He deserved it!!!! hehe Elmo ///// Hey Paul! I started my journal when I first was diagnosed and I write in it almost everyday. I'm going to read it completely as soon as I finish tx. hc

Susie Quill - 23 Mar 2004 23:54 GMT Too funny Elmo! Yes, I figure it is a long shot that I keep the journal up. Will see. Foot ball helmet. That is an idea.
I did re-arrange the bedroom the other day. Got the bed closer to the bathroom. Planning ahead. : )

I gave up on making lists of things to do, generally, a long time ago. I kept losing them. I have a list of things now to finish before starting treatment. I have to keep re-writing it because I keep losing it.

I have taken care of every thing and everyone else, but totally forgot about my need to eat. I also have to move one of my PC's to my bedroom. Walking downstairs to use it just isn't going to work. Susie Thanks Susie, This entire process seems to be the ultimate in our marvelous medical industry. Just kidding, yesterday my insurance company called and said my first delivery would have to go my doctors office. When I protested the idiot woman said she would pull my records (why is she calling me without them?). Five minutes later she informed me that "I guess that was someone else. We can ship your medication to your house with no problem." My doctors nurse hasnt called to give me the results of my last tests either. My meds are now scheduled to arrive Friday, but because of my weekly schedule I want to make Wednesday my shot day. While this delay is discouraging it's a good thing actually because I came down with one of the worst colds (maybe flu) I have ever had. It seems like I'm getting a preview of what to come and it has pointed out that I need to figure out how I am going to get and prepare food for myself for the next 48 weeks. I have taken care of every thing and everyone else, but totally forgot about my need to eat. I also have to move one of my PC's to my bedroom. Walking downstairs to use it just isn't going to work. I'm heading back to bed so I can rest up for this coming Wednesday. Keep me in your thoughts, Julie PS Is it possible to even get a cold or flu while doing this treatment? Hey Susie, I have been thinking about you and wondered how your handling that first shot. Mine begin Wednesday instead of today so I will be a few days behind you. Why not just do them online? You get your refund back faster that way too, if you're getting one. I did mine on TaxBrain.com this year. There are lots of other sites too. Or did you mean drop them off at your CPA? I do them myself 'cause it's cheaper. But yes, comfort is key. Anything I can do online instead of by standing in line in stores or whatever, I invariably do online. Grocery shopping especially.
Warm wishes and prayers Minerva
Susie Quill - 30 Mar 2004 10:03 GMT My taxes are paid to the local govt, U.S. Commonwealth, Northern Mariana Islands......and they aren't on line. The benefit is that the local taxes is half the federal tax. The down side is that it is terribly slow. Still haven't received my tax refund from last year! 9/11 about did this tiny govt. in. Japanese tourist keep it afloat and they about abandoned the place. Susie
> snip > [quoted text clipped - 12 lines] > Warm wishes and prayers > Minerva elmoemerson@webtv.net - 30 Mar 2004 12:14 GMT Glad things are going so well for you, SQ. When it comes to pain relief, headaches included, I take Vioxx. If I don't take it daily, I have a nearly debilitating amount of aches and pains. Narcotics aren't my cup of tea, can't stand the way they make me feel. On the other hand, tylenol and ibupropen don't touch the pain. Vioxx, although not the most liver friendly medication, does it for me.
The second one isn't as bad as the first. It's worse! ahahahahahahahah Just kiddding. Seriously, the flu-like symptoms you felt after the first one get much better after you get over that first shot. Next you'll be dealing with fatigue as your blood counts begin to drop. Hang in there, you'll be aok.
Did your friends all draw straws to figure out which one of em got to spank you the other night? I'm betting you're gonna get sick of seeing them all come over and tell you how good you look. By the time I got halfway thru tx, I didn't want to see or talk to anyone, didn't answer the phone.
Hope today finds you feeling better than yesterday.

Next Wednesday will soon come around and you'll be on your way with the tx. A similar thing happened to me. I delayed my starting of tx because I had a heavy cold (and I wanted to see a blood test result too). It didn't make sense to start tx while feeling like that. I still had the leftovers of the cold when I started. I was thinking like you inasmuch that I would be incapable of doing much on tx. Although it's early days for me, I am finding that I can do 95% of everything I normally do - except for the 24 - 36 hours after the shot when I'm a bit zapped out. That 5% is about me getting tired a little more easily. I have been feeling quite well but my thinking and emotions have been a little odd - a bit on the intense side. Three days after the first shot, I actually felt better than i did before tx because my cold had gone. I don't know if you would normally get a cold while on tx. I have read (unverified) that interferon actually cranks up the immune system. Some people say that the tx didn't really hit them until they had been on it a number of weeks. Perhaps it will be like that for me. If so, I am grateful for any reprieve I can get.

Russ - 26 Mar 2004 07:49 GMT My taste for foods really changed in the last 8 months. I used to be a big time coffee drinker, don't touch it anymore. I drink a cup of hot tea (herbal non-caffeinated) most mornings.
I don't eat much red meat ( or any other meat for that matter) now days. I like seafood and chicken though. Eggs, cheese and milk I do ok with. But not a lot of those either.
Buy lots of cereal and milk. Quick and simple, and it's better then nothing. Because sometimes nothing sounds better then eating. Canned soup, Top Ramen, easy stuff to make. Peanut butter and Jelly works pretty good for me sometimes. Some of those frozen mini-dinners aren't too bad, small portions too. I noticed I don't eat near as much as I used to.
Sometimes it isn't that I'm not hungry, I'm just too damn tired to cook and too sick to care...
On getting a cold or flu, I just don't know. When I was in Missouri in February I caught a sinus infection, except for the snotty nose and sneezing, I felt just as crappy as I usually did. I think it's possible to catch a mild cold/flu while on treatment and not even know.
Wishing Julie and Susie the best on your upcoming journey. Were all here rooting for you!! You can do it!!

I had a heck of a time getting cleared by the insurance company. Then when I called my doctors nurse to alert her to me coming in for her to show me how to give the injection, she had no idea what I was talking about. I don't think she had done this before actually. However, we got thru it just fine today.
I would imagine that while on interferon, one wouldn't come down with colds. ...but I don't know for sure. Susie

keep lots of water and popcicles around. that's all you will need.

Never mind that they have to deal with a million other patients who all have *busy schedules* and think they are the most important thing in the universe. Never mind that the *idiot* woman probably had to wait while a networked computer crawled along with her as it's lowest priority. Never mind that the *idiot* woman probably had people telling her to hurry up and do a hundred other things that needed doing. Never mind that the *idiot* woman probably has problems of her own, like maybe a family member is dying or a child, is being born, or "how the hell am I going to get time to put a new tyre on the car"? Never mind that she has to spend each and every day dealing with *arrogant* *self-centered* people on the phone who think she is an *idiot*?

That is so difficult isn't it? I mean it is so hard just to pick up an apple and chew, or a banana and chew, or a bunch of grapes and chew, or even to pick up the phone and have a pizza delivered. I'm just sitting here worrying what I am going to eat in 48 weeks time. Hell, should I schedule soup for that day, or roast beef?

I think that AUK should give an award for *neat and tidyness*, and that you should win it.
> I'm heading back to bed so I can rest up for this coming Wednesday. > Keep me in your thoughts, > Julie Yes, you rest up. It is so hard to stick that needle in and pop that pill. You should have at least eight people round to watch you do it.

Why the possibilities in life are endless. Tell you what, why don't you sit down and work out the value of Pi just to pass the time and take your mind off things?
dogin - 24 Mar 2004 02:32 GMT Julie and Susie: the best of luck to you both. I really dont think the football helments will be required but I would highy recomment GPS reciever in case you lost. lol Good luck ladies, the dragon is good as dead!

I'm living on an island that is 10 miles by 13 miles. It is mountanous, but really can't get too lost. There are three main roads and lots of little residential streets, few street signs. LOL In fact, they have just started putting up street signs this year! I was lost last week-end after giving someone a ride home in the dark and haven't even started treatment. Didn't panic because I knew if I kept going I'd eventually reach something I recognized. LOL This is funny because it did cross my mind that if I was in the states, I'd probably have wound up in another town.
Julie, do you think you'll check in to getting a GPS receiver?? LOL I am thinking about having my bathroom padded though. Thanks for the best wishes dogin. Susie

Shawn - 24 Mar 2004 15:21 GMT I finally had to get a GPS receiver. I came out of a Safeway Grocery store. About 3 blocks from my office. Got in my truck and had no idea where I was!! Rather scary. Had my cell phone with me, so called my wife about why I was buying groceries! She told me how to get home.
 Signature Regards, Shawn .
