Hello!
I've been here off and on over the years, but it has been a while since I
last peeked in. I have finally decided to go thru with interferon
treatment. Looks like it is really a great list right now too.
I have type 2b, stage 2 fibrosis, last viral load 126125. Alts are usually
normal or a little above. The problem is that I have terrible fibromyalgia
which I am sure is triggered by the HCV. Went to doc and asked for
interferon and he gave me prescription for 48 weeks. I had thought it
would be 24 weeks with 2b. Dunno
I saw where someone said they were looking forward to getting started. That
is how I feel. Ready to get started and knock this dragon out. Was
waiting for something better to come along, but can't wait any longer. Know
it won't be easy, but with the fibro., I don't have a life anyway. I'm
always tired, always in pain, always sleeping my free time away. I can
work, but have no other life.. At least this will give me some hope. I
figure that since I'm already this miserable, maybe I won't notice any more
extra fatigue and pain. ha!
They are working on getting me pre-approval right now with the insurance
company. When I checked on this about two years ago, was told they couldn't
get peg here. I hope that has changed. I'm living on an island right now,
north of Guam and I'm afraid shipping may still be a problem. I have to
do this now. I have insurance now and some sick leave built up and I'm
finally psychologically ready.
Any suggestions from anyone on supplements or anything else. I know that
NAC was one found to be helpful while on interferon.
Thanks for listening.
Susie

It's OK so long as you use your killfile to filter out the nutters,
agitators etc. You will soon figure out who is worth listening to and
who isn't.

It *should* normally be 24 weeks tx with genotype 2b. The only time
I've heard of it being for 48 weeks is when tx failed and somebody was
having a second attempt. I assume this is your first attempt with
interferon?
Also, they normally give out something called pegylated interferon
now. It means that you only need once a week injection. You make no
mention of ribavirin in your post. Here in the UK, the usual quantity
for ribavirin is 800 mg a day with genotype 2b. It looks very
important to take ribavirin alongside the interferon as it greatly
increases the chance of a succesful outcome. (There is no point in
taking ribavirin alone except for one week after the last injection).

Yes, I'm itching to get started (will probably itch after I start too
:-) ). I've got the drugs already. I will be starting on the first
weekend after getting a test result back from the lab. At the moment,
it looks like next weekend (March 5/6 ).

Well I don't really know about supplements. I've seen many
suggestions. The best ones seem to be to drink lots of fresh water
and to be prepared to take anti-depressants if it proves necessary.
Some people prefer to take them anyway before starting tx as they can
take a while to start working.

No problem. Stick around won't you?
I am concerned about that prescription for 48 weeks though. I hope it
is not an indication of incompetence from the doctor - especially as
regular blood monitoring is needed while on peginterferon and riba.
Best wishes,
Paul

Is there a problem with your reading comprehension, or is it simply that
English is your second language?
Read where she says:

Guess what Monkey Boy, Susie-Q was here before you, before Thomas, and before
Mom. Unfortunately she is known to be unduly under the influence of the sys-
tek, so I doubt that she will be killfiling you feral cave dwellers in the
manner in which she should. Now crawl back into the depths of the cave where
you belong until your betters require your presence.

Yes, that IS strange - I'd go back and ask your doc why he thinks 48
weeks are necessary. Maybe he just put it in for insurance purposes, but
doesn't really plan on letting you go through all of it. Did he
prescribe ribavirin as well?

Hey, at least you have a positive outlook! ;-)

You should insist on getting Peg. The success rates are clearly better.

I know the standard Peg-Intron (Schering) doesn't require refrigeration
(neither does Ribavirin), so that should ease shipping concerns
somewhat. Pegasys (Roche) and the Peg-Intron Ready pen must be
refrigerated. Talk to your doc and your pharmacy so you always have at
least a two weeks supply in reserve in case anyone screws up.

I don't know why NAC would be helpful during treatment, it might
actually interfere with the meds. Vitamin E might be helpful, vitamin C
is less clear but probably doesn't hurt. Always talk to your doctor
about any supplements you plan to take, including vitamins and minerals.
He might be OK with NAC, but be sure to ask him.

Oooh! I needed that hug too. Thanks. I won't leave again any time soon.
It was just that the last time I looked in, there was an awful lot of
arguing going on at that time.
I don't see those posters now.
I appreciate the warm welcome from those that responded.

No. Thomas, Elmo, Paul and Mom are still here, and liable to argue like the
trolls they are at any given moment. I urge you to killfile them now for your
peace of mind Susie-Q.
