Top Ten Albums List

Michael Don Henry - 18 Feb 2004 17:51 GMT
My friend this weekend asked me to come up with a top ten album list. I came
up with 40 and had to just start eliminating because they just didn't affect
my life as much as these. I realize it is a very limited list, but it is my
list. We are on a quest for new (old) music that we missed because we were
blinded to a bunch of music because of our narrow mindedness. Anyway, we are
on a search for the good old stuff. Come up with a top ten list for me.

HBO, Help a Brother Out

I believe everyone has their own frequency they run on. Everyone likes some
music, and everyones list is different. I am passionate about my music.
These albums are my frequency. Share yours.

I liked Delany and bonnie, whatever happened to them?
YOu all must be way younger than I am.
I was listening to John Mayall, The Who, The Jefferson Airplane, Big
Brother, Steely Dan, The Doobies etc. Music from the Big Pink. Jimi
Hendrix.  country joe and others. Hubby listened to most of the Blues
players including George Benson, 'Beyond the blue horizon", and trying
to emulate most of them in his guitar music.

And I forgot about Asleep at the Wheel.  I used to like them too.
I forget.  Rick I know you are not talking to me, but wasn't Asleep At
the Wheel the same as the Doobies before they broke up into the Doobies?

Ok I am totally confused again.  I thought Asleep At the Wheel were
living on some acreage off of hwy. 137 in Sonoma county.  I looked it up
on the internet and I know Reuben lived in Sonoma back then.  In fact
Tony played at some party with Reuben in the hills between the Valley of
the Moon and Petaluma.  May have been where the Doobies lived, I forget
these things was too busy working and raising my daughter back in the
70's to have total recall.

Hey, if you liked the Sepultura, check out Max's new(er) band,

Hello Anja, it's good to hear from you, my dear!  I thought you would
know Soulfly- your tastes run in a similar direction as mine.  : )
I have been immersed in high family drama of late, and sadly admit
that I've been derelict in my correpondence for some time. I haven't
heard from Mel lately, but when I do, I'll gladly send her all your

I've been listening to the Moody Blues for the last few days myself.
One of my favorites is Tuesday Afternoon.  Reminds me of visiting the
land on the other side of the rainbow, ah the colors, the patterns. Now
that I've spent the last 25 weeks feeling like the day after, don't
think I would ever take that trip again.

Old Chicago bluesman--I don't even know if you can find the album any more.
*GREAT* music though.  I'd have to rip the album to send it to you.
Dwight - 19 Feb 2004 06:08 GMT
This is harder to do than one might think.  My list will probably be
different from most because my taste in music entails the memories that
certain songs bring up as well as the music itself.  Here's my list in
no specific order.  I'm cheating right now and will narrow it down later. :)

1.  Pink Floyd - "Wishing You Were Here" ( If you've ever set in a
ring        of fire in the middle of the desert with the stars shining...)

2.  The Beatles - "Help", "Revolver", "Rubber Soul", "Sgt. Pepper's",
"The White Album", "Let It Be" (Pick one, I grew up with The Beatles
and all of them impacted my life)

3.  Bob Dylan - "Highway 61 Revisited", "Blonde On Blonde", or "Blood On
The Tracks" ( I like them all, but these are my favorites )

4.  Simon and Garfunkel - "Sounds of Silence" and "Bookends" (There was
a time in my life when these albums touched something deep inside.)

5.  Bruce Springsteen - "Born to Run", "Darkness On The Edge Of Town",
or "Greetings From Asbury Park" ( An energy that matched mine at the
    time)

6.  Derek And The Dominos - "Layla" or Eric Clapton - "Slowhand"

7.  Credence Clearwater Revival - "Willy And The Poor Boys"

8.  The Doors - "L.A. Woman", "The Doors", or "Morrison Hotel"

9.  The Rolling Stones - "Hot Rocks" ( I know it's a compilation album,
but there are so many good songs to choose from )

10. Led Zeppelin - "Led Zeppelin II", "Physical Graffiti", or "Houses of
    the Holy"

And of course those albums that could replace any of the above at any
given time.

11. Rush - "2112" or "Moving Pictures"

12. Lynard Skynard - "One More From The Road" or "Second Helping"

13. Marshal Tucker Band - "Fire On The Mountain"

14. The Allman Brothers - "Eat A Peach"

15. The Eagles - "Hotel California" (Wore out two 8 tracks)

There are so many more, but my head hurts and the brain fog makes it
hard to concentrate.  So much music so little time.

> Not necessarily in order

 Mine either:

1. Beatles - Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
2. Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
3. Grateful Dead - American Beauty
4. Los Lobos - Kiko
5. Benny Goodman - Live at Carnegie Hall 1938
6. The Jam -In the City
7. Stone Roses - Second Coming
8. Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
9. Big Brother & the Holding Company - Cheap Thrills
10. Talking Heads - Remain in Light

Honorable Mentions:

Velvet Underground - 1969
Jane's Addiction - Ritual de lo Habitual
Jefferson Airplane - After Bathing at Baxter's
The English Beat - I Just Can't Stop It
Yes - Relayer
Radiohead - OK Computer
Derek and the Dominoes - Layla
Frank Zappa - Apostrophe
Robert Fripp & Brian Eno - Evening Star
Rolling Stones - Beggar's Banquet

In the changer now:

Paul Weller - Illumination
Lovin' Spoonful - Daydream
Grateful Dead - Postcards of the Hanging (Live covers of Dylan tunes)
Jane's Addiction - Strays
Los Lobos - Good Morning, Aztlan

These are all ALBUMS that are near and dear to me. But in my opinion,
the single greatest piece of music ever composed, performed or recorded
is the Symphony # 9 in D minor by Ludwig van Beethoven, especially the
4th movement, "Ode to Joy". Preferably the Deutsche Grammophon recording
with Herbert von Karajan conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Freude, schõner Gõtterfunken,
Tochter aus Elysium...

 Daughter of Elysium...)

I put my top ten as well as others for everyone to share. I put credits for
the lists I have. Let me know if you don't want these on there and I'll take
em right off.

You've got some good choices here.  Some of them I haven't thought of in
over 20 years.  Some of them were on 8-track, old roommates had some of
them, and some of them just disappeared over the years and just dropped
out of memory.  Thanks for jogging my memory.

I bought and watched a new music DVD last night.  It's John Mayall's
70th Birthday Concert with Eric Clapton, Chris Barber and Mick Taylor
along with the Bluesbreakers.  Buddy Whittington is one hell of a
guitarist in his own right and with all the other big guns on stage, it
was a magnificent performance.  I highly recommend this one!!

Good stuff Elmo, I seen John at the Easttown in Detroit in the late
60. As well as Pink Floyd on their UMMAGUMMA tour. Proco Harlem was
touring with them. That was a great venue, everybody played the
eastown.
