Sorry we forgot to invite you to the party. Dozens of people with
hundreds of itty bitty eye drop bottles to try! There was a guy there
from San Francisco with a bottle that had me looking out of dozens of
eyes all over my body! Would have ordered some of his drops but the
DEA  got to him before I did. Maybe next year :-)

I just joined this group. I see there are very few postings. I've had
glaucoma for years and I'd be glad to answer any question I could. I've
learned alot since '92. I hope this group is still alive. It would be nice
to compare notes with fellow survivors. Joan W

I don't know what has suddenly happened to this group.  Prior to two or
three weeks ago there were several postings every day with a lot of good
information.  Since then, nothing.

I have had glaucoma for several years but since having cataract and trab
surgery a couple of years ago my pressures have been in the low teens and I
no longer use drops.  Sure hope it continues that way.

Is it usual for pressures to drop after cataract surgery? I've had glaucoma
for quite a few years but have only recently developed cataracts. The doctor
warned me that I may lose some vision by having cataract surgery but did not
say that lower pressures were another likely side-effect.

I don't believe cataract surgery alone will have any effect on pressures.  I
had trab surgery (trabeculectomy) along with the cataract surgery.  That is
where a small opening is made to relieve the pressure.  It is performed when
drops alone do not control the pressures.

I have glaucoma and had cataract surgery in my left eye 12 months ago,
Unfortunately the new lens was misplaced in the eye and I had to have a
second op. to remove it and replace it with another.  Two days later my eye
pressure dropped from a controlled 15+/- 1 or 2 to 2.5 ( 2.5)  At the clinic
took me off the drops ( Alphagan/Betagan/Xalatant ) which they had told me
to continue.  The pressure recovered to 15 eventually but with impaired
vision.

A week ago I suddenly experience, without pain or discomfort, what I can
only describe as a sudden release of tension in the eye coupled with an
effect on the sight in that eye which I can only describe as looking through
water!

I spent 12 hours at he clinic the next day undergoing tests and the
administration of drops culminating with a tablet of Acetazolamide and
Iopidine drops.  My eye pressure when I went into the clinic was 40 (40).
After the Ac. tablet and Iop. it dropped to 32 before going up to 37.

I had another session with the specialist yesterday after 5 day of Ac. twice
a day ( they make you feel rotten ) Io. Betagan and Maxidex drops.  The
pressure was still 32!!!!

I am just off to the clinic again to see a conclave of specialists.
Yesterday's one confessed that she was baffled.  She could find no reason
for the high pressure.  I have had no events which might cause the problem.
I am 74 and have been short-sighted since being buried in the Blitz in 1041.

Anyone got any ideas??

My mother's eye pressures dropped after cataract surgery, and therefore
her doctor discontinued her glaucoma medication. The pressure
eventually began to rise in one eye, and she is back on drops for that
eye, but the other one remains low, around 13. I don't know how likely
it is to have lowered eye pressures after cataract surgery, but it does
happen sometimes, at least temporarily.

A lowering of the pressure following a cataract extraction and artificial
lens replacement seems to be quite common.
One reason for this could be that the lens implant is about 1/3 as thick as
the natural lens, thus creating better filtration through the natural
filtration system. Thats the explanation I was given.

I have just come back to this group after several weeks. My wife has
glaucoma and has been using several kinds of drops for about five years.
Recently she started suffering from very bad inflamation around her eyelids
and below the eyes leaving very red traces. The doctor told her that it was
an allergy and to stop using certain of the medications. Now, if she stops
all medications the inflamation goes away but she is worried that it may
cause the glaucoma to get worse. We have heard that the whole thing can be
cured by some sort of laser treatment. Has anyone heard of this and if so is
it really effective? A thoughtful reply would be appreciated.  John P

I think you are referring to SLT, selective laser trabeculoplasty. It
has a relatively high success rate with suitable glaucoma patients and
may eliminate the need for eyedrops for a few years. Your wife should
ask her glaucoma specialist if she is a good candidate for SLT.
