DR. Cohn:
You are so good about answering questions. I have a very prominent eye
doctor in NYC who after years of treating me for high pressure of the right
eye has finally suggested a trab surgery. I have faith in him but felt it
wise before the operation to get a second opinion. I am going to Dr. Ritch
for the second. Am I doing the right thing in your opinion? PS One problem
is I am allergic to almost all eye drops except Alphagan-P and Lumigan which
is another  problem he has encountered in treatment.

Thank you for your time,
Marcia

Absolutely, Marcia.  I never suggest someone avoid a second
opinion...especially before moving to a surgical option regarding
glaucoma.  However, keep in mind that many of our glaucoma medications
can be made "preservative-free," and it may be the preservative in the
drops that you are allergic to.  Leiter's pharmacy in San Jose, CA
compounds many of these meds and ships them all over the country.  You
can find them online.
Good luck to you,
Rick Cohn, MD

Dear Dr. Cohn,
Thank you so kindly for your reply.. I really appreciate it. Thanks also for
the info about preservative free meds. Will certainly look into that. Again,
many thanks.. Marcia

Would this apply to Alphagan P?  That's the one I'm allergic to.  I
wonder if it would work better than the Betoptic S that replaced it?

Which reminds me...  I didn't get a response to my query about shelf
life.  A bottle of Betoptic S will last me 2-3 months.  Does it lose
its effectiveness if I keep it that long?

Alphagan P has a different preservative (Purite) than the others
(Benzalkonium chloride), but in the Alphagan, which has a rather high
incidence of allergy, the allergy is to the drug itself.  Can't answer
your question about the Betoptic S, but my guess is that it is just
fine after a few months.  If you're truly worried, contact Alcon, the
manufacturer.
Take care,
Dr. Cohn

Which reminds me, there must be a saint mixed into your ancestry, Dr.  :-)
