My Opthamalogist just gave me samples of Restasis for dry eyes and his
nurse seems to think this med can actually CURE dry eyes or sjogrens --?
I would like to hear what you think of this med . I have a real problem
with this and I am really eager to get some help .And do you think  meds
can cause dry eyes ? I am on the new drug Spiriva which has atrovent in
it .    I also have osteoarithitis and wonder if this causes dry eyes .
The only med I take for arithitis is Motrin .

Restasis is a wonderful medication for dry eyes...it's really the only
medication on the market for dry eyes...everything else is just a tear
drop of one type or another for lubrication.  Restasis is cyclosporin
A, a medicine that fights inflammation around the lacrimal gland, that
many experts feel is responsible for dry eyes.  I have had dramatic
success with it in my Sjogren's patients.  It should be used in both
eyes twice a day.  After six months it may be decreased to once a day.
My only words of caution is that the medication may sting for the
first few weeks of use...this always gets better, and I would not
recommend using it before any glaucoma meds because its thick, oily
base may prevent absorption of glaucoma meds.  Once a tube is opened,
it may be refrigerated and used later in the day...don't let the tip
touch anything as there are no preservatives in the tube.  Keep it
upright in a shot glass (also, Allergan, the manufacturer, makes a
little plastic device to keep the tube upright on your refrigerator
shelf...your doc may have samples of this...I do).
Good luck with it,
Dr. Cohn
