I am noticing that for some reason I stink :)
It's like I haven't showered for a while. I am not smelling the aroma
all the time, but just sometimes. I know it is not because I don't bathe
or shower regular because I do. And I can detect the smell immediately
after a bath sometimes.
Does anyone think this is an "aura" or what you call a prelude to a
seizure or an after effect of one maybe? I really don't know of any
"auras" that I have, and the only knowledge of my seizures to me are
tongue bites and blank spells after one.
Anyone else have this indication that can tell me if it is "pre-seizure"
or "after a seizure" for them maybe??

Hello Owlvee, I just wanted to say that over active perspiration is a very
common problem with myself, and others on this newsgroup as a side effect
from our medication, and just wanted to suggest that this could be what is
giving you this aroma too.

Over perspiration is a huge problem for me. It could be 30 degree
weather and I am dripping with sweat. YOu should see me in 80 degree
weather. :}. As for the odor, I smell it after a seizure. It is
exteremly strong, even with a shower it doesn't seem to help it.

The only thing about that is, the aroma goes away. It doesn't stay with
me. It is like I have active perspiration smell like you say but it
isn't permanent. An hour or so after smelling like I haven't had the
bath like I say, I no longer have the perspiration smell? It's back to
the out of the shower fresh aroma again???

thanks for the response!!

It sounds like the type of smell depends on which lobe is involved. The
smell I used to get only lasted for a short while. I don't recall
exactly how long but definitely less than a minute. When this first
started happening, I checked the garbage cans and everywhere trying to
figure out where it was coming from. After a lot of experience, I
determined that it's an internal smell (but not coming from the mouth or
anything like that) and not coming from the environment. I really
didn't notice any really close association with the occurrence of
full-blown seizures. It just seemed to come randomly, but I was having a
lot of seizure symptoms back then as I was not being treated. That
smell stopped after I started medication.

Howdy!
Some epilepsy meds are excreted through the skin and can cause a person to
stink.
I was taking a med that worked that way.
(Depakote maybe?)
As for the "stinking and then the smell goes away"... maybe you still stink
but you've just gotten used to it so you don't notice it anymore. (Just a
possibility!!)

I have been searching for answers and on a Canadian Epileptic info site
I found the following quote which seems to partially answer my question.
The quote makes it seem as if though as I am having a "partial seizure"
WHEN having these aromas.
And you're right Dave, I probably stink anyways :)
"Simple partial seizures which arise in or near the temporal lobes often
take the form of an odd experience. One may see or hear things that are
not there. One feels emotions, often fear, but sometimes sadness, anger,
or joy. There may be a bad smell or a bad taste, a funny feeling in the
pit of the stomach or a choking sensation. These seizures are sometimes
called simple partial seizures of temporal lobe origin or temporal lobe
auras."
So maybe it is a seizure of a form I am having at the time I smell the
strange odor "seemingly" coming from me????
(Plus now with this below quote, I can blame my bad breath on a
seizure!!) Again, thanks for the reply.......
:)

If you try under Auras under http://efa.org ?? With respect to the Temporal
Lobe auras, a putrid, foul or eggy type aura is associated with the *left
temporal lobe (if that's where your seizure focus is). The Left side can
also have a Jamais Vu (never seen) feeling, where your own place might seem
like a stranger's.
The Right side T.lobe aura is usually a sour, lemon taste or aroma, and
this one can have a Deja vu feeling.
( Those sensations might also be described under Julie's Idaho First Aid for
seizures chart, referring to Complex Partial = Temporal lobe based seizures.
I found the taste and aroma under multiple locations several years ago.
Google might also pull in references under e.g partialseizures&aroma ? )G. /

Hi there Owlvee -I too have these smells sometimes(always
bad-bodily-odours)like puke, piss, sh.t, sweat...-You name it -But then
I discovered that it only derived from my left nostril (I had a
right-hemisphere hemmoraghe)and if I closed my left and breath only
through my left nostril I could not smell these "unpleasantries" - and
so I concluded it was just my "mind-playing-tricks-on-me" -it never had
anything to do with my seizures, it was just an unpleasant side-effect
of the hemmoraghe (Kind of a smell-hallucination)
Hope you find the solution on your part -just a few tips...

Kind regards

I know this is a little off-topic, but I'd just like to say thanks to
Sim1, for assuring me that I ain't the only person in the world who gets
these "mind-playing-tricks-on-me" games/attacks.
I'd just like to say, that in my experience of this warped, twisted
feeling, as maybe with yours, and many other people out there who just
haven't mentioned it yet, it comes in many more colours than one.
This has meant that sometimes I've smelt it as an awful toilet odour just
after a shower, other times I've heard loud blasting music in a silent
hospital waiting room, I've seen ordinary gangs of men on the street and
ran kissing them all, asking for their autographs and telling my hubby
standing next to me that they were all famous actors, but in my case, the
worst for me is always when my co-ordination completely goes for several
days, which leaves me bursting into tears about how I'll never walk again.
I suppose it's just a shame that there hasn't been much - if any education
or medication to treat our more severe after effects though, and a lot of
us are still treated as if we've lost our marbles just by mentioning them.
