How to manage a cold so you don't lower your seizure threshold? I know
my doctor told me not to take cold medications. So what do the rest of
you do when you get a cold?
This is something I did not know. Why does the doctor say that you can't
take cold medications and are we here talking about simple asperine or
something stronger? Did he meant to say that cold medications can interfere
with anti epileptic medications? I guess that depends on the type of anti
epilpectic medications? My prescription did not tell me anything about that
(Depakine Cr / Depakote Cr / Depakene Cr).
Pehaps you can answer my questions -it is good to know prior having a cold
then during the cold itself!

Hi Marco, several years ago I tried taking something like sudafed, I think. I
felt really out of it. When I went to the doctor later he told me not to take
cold pills like that because it could lower my seizure threshold. Or it could
be the combination of the drugs makes me wacky ;-) I can use my allergy nasal
sprays, I use ibuprofen (advil) for the pain, and I have to be careful about
the cough medicine. I looked to see what they say at the Epilepsy Foundation.
See this link, the next to the last statement.

I would discuss it with your pharmacist or doctor. Yes, I agree it is good to
know prior to getting the cold/flu.
Take care,
Julie

Thanks Jullie for link and your message. I will certainly discuss this with
the two you mentioned.

Your right Satch, the only way I found out was because I had to literally
beg my GP for years to give me a painkiller for my headaches. She kept
telling me that medication such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and codeine were
far too strong to take with my own medication, and also couldn't be taken
for my nose allergy, which I've had for nearly 20 years though.
I did finally get her to agree to let me have paracetamol though, but
she said that I should never take anything stronger. They really should
tell us more about these things beforehand though so we'll know in case we
take something we shouldn't.

My doctors have never said anything about cold medicines. I've never had
problems with just a cold or plain old sore throat, but if I have
something more serious and run a prolonged temperature even if it is
low, I'm likely to have at least some seizure symptoms. Usually I don't
take anything for colds or sore throats, but sometimes find it necessary
to use allergy medications because sometimes colds seem to make the
allergies worse. Have never had problems with the allergy meds, and it
usually helps relieve the cold symptoms. My daughter told me zinc might
help, and I did try it a few times, and it seemed to work too. Don't
know if that was just coincidence though.
Was your doctor talking about all cold medications or just those in
liquid form (maybe because they contain alcohol?).

Good to know that as well. I am reluctant or actually I do not want to take
any alcohol kind of stuff -even if it is in the medication.

I was told that antihistamines can lower the seizure threshold, so I just
sniffle and suffer. Hot ginger tea with lemon and honey can help too.

Yes, the hot tea really helped. While we were traveling home I stopped and
bought a hot cup of tea with honey. That helped clear my throat.
Take care,
Julie

Suffer - and blame my kids!
Occasionally I reach for painkillers.
