Hi everyone

This is the first time I have written to the newsgroup but do read the posts
regularly.  I have a query.  I've had epilepsy for 46yrs and at present take
Tegretol Retard CR 800mg, Lamitcal (Lamotrigine) 300mg and phenobarbitone
90mg daily.  My blood tests are done by my doctor as I don't see a
specialist and the last blood test was approx 2003.  My doctor says you can
only have blood tests for phenobaritone. I am going through the menopause
and would like to know how they check you have the right dosage of Tegretol
and Latramgine.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi. If your Tegretol is a solid tablet, it's like Tegretol CR (Controlled
Release) in Canada or U.S. but is same essentially.   If it's a hollow
'plastic tube' with powder inside? it's listed as Tegretol XR (Extended
Release) here.  That's just for information if you find anything of use on
the Ep. Foundation Website in the U.S. or some other site.
The U.S. Ep. Foundation of America has a medications glossary somewhere
inside their site.  They're at http://efa.org .   (Perhaps someone else will
post the Med. Direct link, or if I find it in my bookmarks I'll add it
shortly.)    You type in the name of the pill and click 'Go' or 'Search' and
it brings up a 1 page printable document.
Alternatively your Chemist might have a printout they can give you for
each of your pills (mine did at first Prescription filling years ago).

Perhaps someone else can post about Lamictal.
As I was going onto Dilantin (Phenytoin), then Off Dilantin and onto
Tegretol CR *I has blood tests done.   I don't know what they were looking
for, but assume there was some level in my blood they were testing, as my
Neuro (Doctor) phoned once or twice 2 days later, to have me add or remove a
half tablet of the solid tablet either in Morning or Night dose until we got
to my target dose he was seeking.
When I was first diagnosed and over first ~2-3 years I say my Neuro about
each 2-3 months and had bloodwork done each time for about the first 3 years
after diagnosis.  Later as we were adjusting some of the dose (down) and
adding another 2nd pill, I didn't have any further work done as we were
going mostly by my seizure frequency and symptoms at that point.
There were people around here who were using Lamictal or had used it, so
perhaps they'll post shortly about whether they had any Bloodwork that
checked levels of that too. Some of them might even know what they were
testing for!
We're an International group, so you should get some responses over next
2-3 days as various timezones see your note.  Keep reading us and if you
need any clarifications, feel free to ask away.   That's why we're all here.

Jeudi, my daughter has been on Lamictal for years and we get levels on a
regular basis.  the theraputic level is between 4 and 15.  We've been
told that anything over 21 may constitute a toxic level.  I would ask
your doctor to research what your taking and the levels that are safe
for you.  My daughter was taking 500mg of Lamictal daily and has been
reduced to 300.  Some medications increase the toxicity of Lamictal but
I don't know if the other meds you're taking do that.

If you "google" for the drugs above, you can find the manufacturers'
fact sheet (PDF format) on each drug, and other web-page info on each.
There can be interactions (Depakote increases the effect of Lamictal,
requiring the reduction of Lamictal when Depakote is also taken,
for instance). Your local druggist may also give you useful information.
There are blood-level tests for Lamictal and Depakote, and, I assume,
for the other drugs.
Good luck!

Howdy Pat!

Tegretol reduces the effect of  Lamictal. (When they took me off of Tegretol
my Lamictal went toxic on me.)

Maybe the lab that your doctor USES can only test for phenobarbitone. I have
had my levels tested for every AED that I've ever taken.

I would suggest that you talk to your chemist (pharmacist) and contact
either:

British Epilepsy Association
http://www.epilepsy.org.uk/

or

National Society for Epilepsy
http://www.epilepsynse.org.uk/

One of them should be able to tell you where you can have your other levels
tested.

I would STRONGLY suggest that you get them tested for 2 reasons:

*You are taking at least 2 drugs that interact with each other.
*You have reached a stage where your own biochemical changes might have an
effect on drug levels.

All you have to do is find a lab that can perform the tests.

Pat,
I would go and get a blood test for tegratol also. The effects of
Tegratol can hurt your liver. Yes, they can get a level for Tegratol
also.
