Gabapentin Withdrawal

Hello
I posted on here a few weeks back after being prescribed Gabapentin.
I am a Type 1 Diabetic and have been for 21 years, so the complications of
this are setting in. 1 of these is Neuropathy which is affecting my hands
,arms and legs. My doctor at Hope Hospital has prescribed me a dose of
1200mg three times a day, which was great until they ran out and they are
not on a repeat prescription.

Upshot is after 3 days without this drug I was taken into hospital, and told
that my high blood sugars which caused me pain and loss of movement was
probably down to the fact that my body was crying out for the Gabapentin.

Question is: I know that this drug is given to help treat Epilepsy and
wondered if any of you had been through the same experience when you stopped
taking this drug for any reason?

Any response to this would be really helpful for my next trip to the
Hospital.

Thanks
Carl Wood

I guess a silly question would be why you stopped taking an AntiEp drug
abruptly?  Did your Dr. know you were planning to do that?   (I haven't used
it btw.)
Many of the Anti-Ep Drugs can produce strong side effects if stopped
abruptly, there's a warning like that on my Tegretrol CR (like Retard in
UK).  A Warning to that effect, if it applied to Gabapentin = Neurontin,
should have come with the
***********************************
Prescription.  (Website listed at bottom I used)

Out of interest, question 2-- Did the Doctors at the UK Hospital you ended
at *know you had stopped taking an AED abruptly? or did you just show up --
conscious or not?

Do they have Medic Alert Bracelets in the UK?  Perhaps you could ask your
Dr. if you should get one.   Those list your Medical Conditions (all of
them) plus Medications are kept on their computer file (without doses as
those change),  but the central file also keeps up to 3 Doctors they can
contact, and up to 3 relatives if you show up unconscious.   Mine paid for
itself in 1993-6 in peace of mind and ease of Drs. accessing my Files plus
Family.

Site I went to to look up Gabapentin vs. possible side effects, was the
U.S. Ep. Foundation of America Medications Glossary.   http://efa.org    <--
within that site there's a link to Medications, or just key in Gabapentin at
top and click Search, and it picks up about 20 articles (bottom click 'more'
or whatever to get no. 21-40, etc.).
That was where I found that Gabapentin was also Neurontin.

There may be a UK site (like the Ep. Foundation of America), but I don't
know of one.   The uk dot people dot support dot epilepsy site was all but
destroyed in 1999 by a fellow who used all the UK support sites as a Culling
ground for addresses to resell.    From 20-40 posts a day, like this site,
it fell to less than 10 a week, when I last subscribed about then.   It
might have recovered now, if you want to look.

countries around the world here.    My unbiased option.  ...

**Or your Chemist might have a www site for the Manufacturer or
Distributor of the Medication if you call them, if it's not on the
Prescription Script you got.

A *guess -- subject to someone posting the correct address -- Google
search might pull something up if you try http://google.com  ??   Search on
e.g. Gabapentin&withdrawal ,  OR  Just 'Gabapentin', or 'Neurontin', and see
what comes up.    Google if you haven't used it, you can reduce getting e.g.
30,000 articles by using the '&' in the Search so that you will only get
articles which contain *both words.  You can use Multiple &s if e.g. you got
a Rash and Green Hair, you could have added &rash&greenhair  to the search
above I listed.  Luckily you didn't get either of those, usually a Rash for
e.g. means a med. might be causing an allergic reaction.  Green Hair might
keep people from bothering you while you're reading on a Bus... *maybe

Hi Carl,  (I like you already.....Carl's my middle name)

I'm on Gabapentin (Neurontin) also, along with a cocktail of other
anti-epileptic drugs.
When I started taking it the doctor prescribed 1800mg a day, but the way he
prescribed it, the level was increased too quickly and I started getting
dizzy and couldn't see straight and ended up collapsing. I had to reduce it
again and then bring it up more slowly for my body to adjust to it.
I imagine it's the same coming off it. Once your body has become accustomed
to it the levels need to be reduced very slowly, as with all other anti-ep
medications, to prevent withdrawal effects. Sudden withdrawal of ANY anti-ep
medication is likely to produce profound effects. With epileptics the first
effect tends to be an increase in seizures, but there are bound to be other
effects as well.
I can't understand why they would prescribe it for you with no repeats.
That's not good medical practice with a drug like gabapentin. If you are to
be on that, then it needs to be monitored and taken regularly - you
definitely can't afford to just stop taking it without careful, slow
reduction. (As you're no doubt aware after your unfortunate experience).

Cheers from New Zealand.

Darryl.

I had to stop taking a drug real fast once.  Two days later I was in
hospital coz of having a seizure.

Don't know what Gabapentin is though.

I take Rivotril and I had to cut down on it once coz I was running out
of my prescription.  I only take 1.5mg a day but my body so missed it.
I went sorta cold turkey.  I'm trying real hard not to go through that
again.

Can't understand why your doc didn't talk to you about it, or give you
repeats.
