.I have a 5 year old daughter named Avery.  She has seizures and a problem

with sensory.  She cannot wear pants or panties.  She also has a problem

with music and with loud sounds.  Her doctor told me she has a spot on the

left side of her brain.  He said that it was not a tumor.  Avery also has

a hard time telling me what she wants at times.  The doctor said that it was

because of the Topamax that she takes.  Has anyone heard of seizures and

a problem with sensory? If so is there any info?

Thank you

Kim

Howdy Kim!

Could you be a little bit more explicit about what you mean by "sensory"?

As I understand the word, sensory pertains to ALL of the senses: touch,
taste, sight, sound and smell.

Hello Kim,

What type of epilepsy is your daughter diagnosed with? Is it for example
"reflex" epilepsy? Reflex epilepsy can be triggered by load music, flashing
lights, etc. I never heard of reflex epilepsy in combination with pants or
panties but that just maybe that did not catch that combination. If you can
do a quick search on http://www.epilepsy.com you may find the information
you are looking for? E.g.:

Hopefully this helps?

Avery has complex partial seizures.  That is what the doctor says.  He said
he has no idea why she is having a problem with panties and pants, she can't
stand to wear a seat belt in the car.  None of the medications that they have
tried have helped her so far.  Avery has been having seizures for three years
now.  She goes to the doctor today and I am going to ask to meet with a
surgen.  I want to know what the best thing is for Avery.  I can't get anyone
to understand that something more than just the seizures are going on.  Avery
is having at least 2 to 3 seizures a week.  I am having a hard time holding
on to my job, they have already stopped my insurance at work because I can't
work the hours needed for it.  I have been paying for cobra and this will be
the last month I can afford that payment.    On 12/29/2004 3:31 AM,

The lack of tolerance to music/loud sounds I can understand.  I can't tolerate
certain music or television shows, particularly cartoons, even though I'm not in
the same room (so it has to be sound).  This doesn't bother me when my seizures
are controlled.

The sensory thing with her garments and the seat belt might or might not be
related to the seizures. Has this happened since she started medications or was
that dislike of panties and seat belts there before she started medications?

There are a couple of things to remember: the fear component and the possibility
that her stomach may be a little upset because of the seizures or in-between
symptoms (thus the dislike of having anything bound about the waist area).  The
fear component that accompanies this kind of seizure (which is a symptom that
can remain between seizures) may not be outright fear.  It can be paranoia,
mistrust, leariness at just about anything, feeling uncomfortable, and so on.  I
don't know if this is contributing to her garment problem, but it is a
possibility.  The fear component is not something that seems to make sense
sometimes, and that symptom can hang on between seizures (in my experience), but
can go away after the seizures are controlled (again, in my experience).

I've addressed your daughter's problem from a seizure viewpoint, but now I want
to look at the possibility that the garment fabric, particularly if there is
nylon or exposed elastic, is irritating her skin (not enough to produce a rash
though).  The other thing is that you might have to run her clothes through an
extra rinse cycle to remove leftover detergent.  Probably should avoid fabric
softener on her garments too.  My youngest daughter had problems with bubble
baths causing irritation on the tenderest parts of her body, and her doctor told
us to stop the bubble baths (she could take baths but without the bubble
solution).
