I have been using Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) for about half
a year - rookie into epilepsy ;-) - with good results.
But...........my skins smells.
There has also been an incresement in my perspiration throughout my sleep,
and it gives my blanket, pillow and sheet an ugly smell after some nights
with this (extra perspiration happens every 4 or 5 nights)
It?s difficult to describe the smell, but there seems to be a slightly
ammoniack scent.
Have any of you experienced this ?
Can it be cured or minimized (I?m a daily showerist...) ?
Kind regards
Pete

I experienced something similar when I was taking Topamax (topiramate). I
didn't find any way to reduce it besides more frequent showering & stronger
antiperspirant. The neuro scoffed at the idea that the drugs were
responsible, but I found out for sure when I went off Topamax and the
perspiration went back to normal.

Howdy!
I haven't noticed it with Trileptal but I definately noticed it when I was
taking something else (might have been Depakote.)
In that case it was due to the fact that the drug was excreted from the body
through the skin. Showering was the only solution that I ever came up with.

Sorry...
That was Tegretol (carbomazapine) that did that.
The names (oxcarbazepine & carbomazapine) are very similar so maybe
Trileptal gets excreted through the skin the same way that Tegretol is.

Like the others, I get increased persperation during my sleep from
different drugs that the ones you're on.
It started when I was on tegretol and topiramate, but now I'm on tegretol
and keppra and am still getting it.
It seems to be some kind of an effect in general, to do with
anti-convulsive drugs.

I thought the increased perspiration was just me. Dunno if it happens in my
sleep tho. But... is this just a symptom of some other reaction the drug
causes in the body?
tegretol and lamictal (tegretol and keppra for several years until
recently)

I am on topiramate and dilantin (plus just starting gabapentin)and am
noticing that I get a personal bodily smell for a while (real or not?)
"aura" as it is called, before I have a simple seizure for what it's worth.
I probably stink anyways :)

I am using Valproate Acid (Depakene / Depakote) and my prescription states
that if I smell ammoniack in my urine, then I should call the doctor because
of potential damage to my liver. The skin was not really mentioned
specifically. Doesn't the prescription state something about this as well?

Hmm... I could say something about urine, but afterwards I think it would
leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Not my words though: I typed it over as it was written in the prescription
note :-)

You could ask the Pharmacist where you fill the prescription if there's
anything in the scripts they have about that.
Or (may help) the Ep. Foundation of America has a Medications Glossary,
where you can enter the Generic or Pill name and get a one page printable
(readable) description of a medication and possible side effects. It's not
necessarily complete but I found it accurate for all of the 3 medications I
had used (Dilantin, Tegretol CR and Frisium). U.S. Ep. Foundation is at
http://efa.org go to medications, type in the name and click on 'search'?
or 'go'? that's on the line where you type.
Both Dave's site and Julie's Idaho website also have links to above
within their sites (www at end of their posts). G./
