Strange experience

Good day all,

It is me again :-)

My boss has some troubles. He falls down once per two years. According to
him, there is no logical explanation for this and he never told his
employees that this sometimes happens to him untill it happened at work. The
event takes no more then 60 seconds and they only happened once per two
years. These events however seems to be come more severe and appear more
often now. Once which is actually a couple of months ago, just before I came
into the office, I learned that two colleagues were trying to hold him still
as he was kicking with this foot -actually they were on top of him to make
him stop shaking which is not good.

So, I told him to see a doctor to find out if this is caused by epilepsy. He
however did not like the word "epilepsy" because he only knew the well known
seizure and this was something different and he had done a EEG test six
years ago and nothing was found at that time. I shut my mouth because he is
still my boss and it is still his life as you can imagine.

Last Monday, he was asking some specific questions how he could get in
contact with a neurologist and I explained it to him (GP / referal, etc.).
This was because two days ago, he had another event in front of all his
family at a reception. Now today, he described to me the whole event and he
described to me his personal feelings, his complete panic attacks, his
worries, his fear, etc. I advised him as best as I could though I was a
little bit uncomfortable as he is still my boss and I know he does not like
to talk about his events (but this appears to be changed now). I redirected
him to http://www.epilepsy.com and then he explained to me what really
happend while his events starts. His last events happend with all his family
around so I think they might push him a little bit harder then I could do so
far to see a neurologist:

    1. he feels something strange in his head
    2. he knows how to deal with it as he knows what might happen, so he sits
down for a while (he calls this a panic attack)
    3. he passes out
    4. he start stiffening his legs
    5. he wakes up, exhausted, panicked, fear, and the room is twisting a bit

I told him that this looks like an aura, a simple partial, a well defined
pre-ictal state, ictal state, post-ictal state, etc.

Though this is a strange experience for him right now as he only knows about
the seizure type that is well known to the general public (primary
generalized), it is a strange experience for me as well as I am telling my
boss what to do next! Of course, thanks to this newsgroup that share all
kinds of experiences which do not come directly out of a text book, I am
able to tell my boss that what he experiences looks like epilepsy and that
it is possible that events only happen once or twice a year, etc.

As I always say: with knowledge comes power. Hopefully, my boss will now
really start fighting the events / seizures as well and hopefully he will
survive. I know that it must be very frustrating for him right now. I did
not tell him about the drivers license as I know he used to drive a Porsche
to his work and believe me, he lives a long way from the office; he is not
really that type of guy that takes the public transport.

Hiya Marco

If you can manage to gently talk him around, get him to go back on-line
and do a search on 'epilepsy drop attacks'.

That's surely what it sounds like but naturally he will need a
professional neurological examination to confirm.

Cheers

It doesn't sound anything like a drop attack to me Fran, I should know, I
get them, with the several other types I get.

Despite I don't get any kind of warning before my seizures, my specialist
told me that the majority of people do, which is probably your boss's
way of telling his body he's going to have one.

We all also know that stress can be one of the major factors in causing
a seizure to occur, and as your boss, a stressful job could be what's
doing this to him. Though we can't actually say without a proper diagnosis
of epilepsy -  even my EEG proved negative a couple of months ago, and
I've been having seizures for almost thirty years now.

And as for his age, we arnen't all born with epilepsy, or doesn't he
know that? In fact, more recently we've been told that even Danny Glubber
has just been diagnose with it as well as all those others in history,
such as Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar.

Anyway keep up the good support Marco, and for god sake try and teach your
colleagues the correct recovery position as well.

I'm glad you encouraged him to see a doctor and gave him the link.  It sounds like
seizures, but it could be another medical condition (other than epilepsy) that is
causing those symptoms.  You did all the right things (advising him to see a GP first
was appropriate), and I think just offering support and showing him this is not the
end of life is good for your boss.  Good work Marco!
