G. - 17 Dec 2004 03:45 GMT I had a computer store install this xp2 'upgrade' which may have lost all my bookmarks I had before. :-o I can look for those later. Does anyone have a 'clean' way to subscribe via Windows XP/2 and not Google? You can try reply to sender if you want to keep the O.Topic police away, but *I may not be able to receive mail yet either -- an Email from me to me 5 hours ago hasn't arrived yet! (Probably forgot a stamp.. ) Golly technology is wunderful, I wonder if Bill ever tried this stuff as tho'he didn't have a werking memory.. :-< / One benefit I guess is the trolls can't find me until I find out what this spare (double clip-end) 'cord' is for... I'm sure it plugged in somewhere this morning... I don't remember having any Spares ! :-< I should have bought some Chocolate.. G./
G.Ross - 20 Dec 2004 19:19 GMT Fixed, I think. No thanks to 'expert at computer store' who might have lost all my 40+ bookmarks.--> $108 to lose all my bookmarks and last 4 year's history folders. // Now I can get back to shopping... /

Your bookmarks should be stored in "Documents and Settings\UserName\Favorites", so why not regular taking a backup of it. Oh well, I regularly am dealing with a crashing harddisk causing me to loose and my data and my backup. You however should never leave the "My Documents" folder under the default profiles folder Windows creates. Once you have to reinstall the OS, most likely you will just format the drive and then foetsie gone is your "My Documents" folder (I know we can just reinstall the OS and you then you do not have to format the drive, but when I am reinstalling I always start from scratch which includes deleting the partion + formatting the drive).
Right now, I have two disks in my WinXP computer. One for data storage, one for the OS. I regularly (what is regularly as I just noticed I haven't been backing up for months now!) backup the data disk to the OS disk using NTBackup. I then include the Favorites folder manually as I think this is part of the data and not part of the OS.

No thanks to 'expert at computer store' who might have >> lost >> all my 40+ bookmarks.--> $108 to lose all my bookmarks and last 4 year's >> history folders. // Now I can get back to shopping.. *** Thanks for below. I'll look through it and see if I can sort out where they went (some of my folders and bookmarks). I had so many older mails, Ep. news sites etc. on bookmarks and my 'form letter' I used to post each few weeks for new people, plus I had Olde addresses of people who used to post here 3-4 years ago. While I likely have some 'non-faded' printouts from back then, I was hoping to recover or search out any pieces that might be left from the 'help store' who 'firebombed' my disk, while he loaded xp2. And many of the 'older' people who used to post here, either don't any longer, or just read the group intermittently, but a few of the fellows 'overseas' I used to write from time to time about how to fix 'the world' etc. -- unrelated to living with E. were in those address books too.
As Bob (sps) said earlier, it's getting close Cost-wise to where it would have been Cheaper to **throw out This computer, and buy a **new one Preloaded 'on sale' at Christmas or just after then, and copy (if they haven't been destroyed) the 2-3 year's worth of older stuff I had assembled during that time.. I could have used the Hard Disk for a Frisbee.. With XP2 so far not (seeming) to support my HP Printer, the software 'Bill' charged me for is just as much USE as a Frisbee. Thanks for replying. This older stuff I used gave me ALL I NEEDED wrt. alt.support.epilepsy access, etc. on Windows 95. There was nothing on XP1 or 2 that I've *needed. It's like Buying a BMW when I really just wanted a Bike ! :-< .G./ (One more below)

That might also be a handy way to copy off pieces of one Hard Drive if you didn't trust (like me now) the NEXT Level of Win.XP, and wanted to keep the Olde Level so if XP Version1323 doesn't fix the Bugs in 1322, you can just move Back without so much 'stuff' I went through this past 2 weeks. And it's a Time of Year where *I have lots of spare time to be Doing this !! Christmas/New Year's :-< I should have waited to April 1 (April fool's day) Maybe m.soft would give me a discount for doing it then.
Several of the 'new things' that xp2 does, when it's not saving stuff properly at power off, my Cable Provider haven't been **Trained on or found Fixes for Yet. /G.

Most of the times the "geeks" in a computerstore just load an image they created which means that everything will be wiped out of your hard disk. It is so frustrating that they won't tell you prior of doing that. You might want to search google and type in alt.support.epilepsy + your name and generate the "templates" for newbees, etc. and regenerate them in a new one which you can store again.
Most people use fake addresses, so you won't find them in google or when they use "username@_hotmail.com". Then you know: get rid of "_", etc.

Hehe...but that is not really the case here. I do trust WinXP and most problems I encountered are fixed with XP2. I can understand your frustration but I regular buy myself a new computer which means I have latest hardware and software drivers as well. Actually, I am anxious to get a new copy of the next verion of Windows called Longhorn. My second disk just does not contain WinXp though it does contain "My Documents" and some other non important geek stuff. My first disk contains WinXP, Program Files, Favorites folders in Proffiles folders plus a "my backup at date time.bkf" file generated by running NTBackup which is now approximately 16 GB :-)

XP SP2 has been out now for a couple of months, so they should be able to provide support for it. It is always the same with those ISP. You pay them a hell lot of money and you are happy unless something does break :-(

I'll look through it and see if I can sort out >> where [quoted text clipped - 16 lines] > one > which you can store again. ** I'm worried that's what he did, although I *told him it had 2+ years of Bookmarks and folders, and if I was supposed to copy or save those (takes an extra 2-3 days before he could 'fix the problem with links' ) I asked him if I needed to DO That. Separate but I suspect the same areas to search, like you suggested already below, Win.XP2 can't find the Driver for my HP 697c Printer, so I haven't had the Memory Aid (for me) of Hardcopies of something I wanted to scribble onto either from Here or a UK Astronomy Group I read. Some of the mails from my Family who are 3 timezones away, and a Daughter in Law who's in Australia shortly, I won't be able to print for our Son until I get the hardcopy fixed also... Like Bob (sps) said before, if I can't find all the bookmarks with a Disk search utility, I might be as well off turning this system into a Flower Pot holder, and getting a Whole New *3rd system since 1997. (That's more than $1000 a year plus 550 per yeat for Cable internet access, plus any Anti Virus software, ink paper etc. to keep a 'simple system' in service. If it wasn't for Family above (I could phone) and this group, I don't need to be able to Email Redmond (Washington). I could write 'Bill' by Postcard. G./

A significant no. here (alt.ep) don't, but there were a couple of fellows in UK, and a couple of women in West U.S. who had similar Seizure types to mine (C.P. = Temporal Lobe), so for a period we'd write in more detail Off the Group about our particular experiences. Those are the ones who could be 'gone' if They've changed their addresses, and my 'searches' didn't bring them up. Another CD to buy or a Google (free) to see if they are still in a History file for this group on my H.disk. They'd Have to be in hidden Folders ('deleted' vut not erased) since they're not on the Visible stuff, and I wasn't away from his Store long enough for the owner to have done a Full Hard Drive compression. /

(I haven't heard from them much since the 'stolen software' mail/ exchanges. But on late Win.95 and Early XP-1 their Robot picked me as a 'typical user' to do surveys (about 3 before they went away) for them. I told them about the Flashing Icons and Fragmented Windows that disrupt someone with Light Sensitivity and Poor Memory (screen 1 to 3) that is made worse by not having easier to link Screen Images. On '95 and lesser apparently XP, once a screen moved on about 2-3 levels, the older ones dropped off so if I needed to go back that far, the content was gone. About that time I went to Netscape for ~3 years.) /
I do trust WinXP and most

Try OnSave which can sometimes recover deleted data: http://apps5.oingo.com/apps/domainpark/results.cgi?client=SMAR8224&domain_name=o nsave.com&sid=000ed5d4e4530000&pid=12224&hl=en&ac=r&s=Recover%20Formatted%20Data
I know there is one pitfall, when data that is stored on a particular place on your harddrive gets overwritten, then that data is lost. You may want to try it, you may be in luck. I however have never used it myself but know some guys having used it.
You can of course use the "disk search" util as well -anything might help at this point.

That driver can be downloaded from the Internet: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?docname=bpd09005&lc=en&produ ct=61014&lang=en&cc=us&dlc=en&

If your hard disk originally had full hard drive compression, then OnSave may fail and you probably have lost all your data.

Quality of support is always dependent on the left overs of "this years budget" I guess?
Good luck with OnSave Gaross if you decide to go that route or regarding the printer driver thingie -the printer driver should work on XP though! You just have to get it from HP's website.

G.Ross - 23 Dec 2004 00:53 GMT Thanks-- I thought someone must know where to get those links. There wasn't anything listed with the CD or documentation that came w. the printer etc., although I was able to move from Windows 95 (!) to XP-1 Clean -- it saw the hardware attached, asked if I wanted the driver, went and got it, said 'I'm printing a test page -- does it look like this?' and that time it DID, so it was done. THIS 'new improved' xp2 is like going back to square one, and starting to learn a bunch of New stuff I shouldn't need to know to use this 'appliance'. ALL I want is a Printer, to copy off either something here I want to remember or read offline, OR if there's something in Email (my Daughter writing me) that I want to print and keep to scribble notes for when I reply. This is Not a Nuclear Power plant or a Rocket Engine I'm designing, it's a Hardcopy of what is put into the Editor or from the Screen. /G.

I however have never used it myself but know > some guys having used it. **G* I KNOW about above, that's why I know that the 'help store' didn't have enough time to do a DISK COMPRESS and *I haven't so if there were Hooks to e.g. Dave's Website, Cyber's Posts or Julie's, that I'd be able to search out Some of them to add to new folders (XP2) so long as the Normal system power-up or shutdown had no reason to copy trash over my Good stuff on disk. When (if) I find it TOO, this Old System has a CD Writer Drive-- if I can figure out how to activate that, then some of the Longer Text and Newsgroups stuff I assembled from 2001? to now, I could Mass copy to CDs and then unload those onto a New Computer without needing to Retype all that stuff.
I was lucky and took 'typing' in High School (1860 ! :-< ) as an Option in Grade 10, 11 and 12, so if I remember to put my hands in the Right Place, I expect I can do between 30 and 40+? Words per minute or quicker. Soon, newer machines will have Voice Activated typing, that will be sensitive to different voices and accents (on the same computer) and we may not need to know typing as much. Since I listen to the Radio more than 10 hours a day, I don't know *What that might look like on the screens !! I expect if it would recognize your voice or mine, it would know that the Radio News was a different person and not type his news here-- 10 to 15 cm Snow tonight (first Major snowfall that will stay, this winter) for Toronto and Southern Ontario, Canada. That's wet air either heading North from Florida or West from the Atlantic Ocean area. 1x ***s at end. /
> You can of course use the "disk search" util as well -anything might help > at [quoted text clipped - 44 lines] > Quality of support is always dependent on the left overs of "this years > budget" I guess? *G* The 2x I called I got the impression for the first time in 6 years, that *Some of the 'new improved xp2' is stuff they haven't made a lot of use of yet. Some of my settings would get removed or 'reset' when I shut my computer off at end of a session. After calling them 2-3 times to get "type this, check that, type that, enter this, double click that, etc." I asked the latest fellow why this gets 'Reset' each time I shut off the computer-- and he didn't know Why or how to *Permanently set the changes he made (I wrote down now) for the Next time I turn on the computer. THOSE are the things that are keeping me, for now, from bothering to get a New Improved Computer, since they look like they're getting WORSE to use rather than easier.
Thank you for the links --> I'll try the 2 searches you listed above, AFTER trying the HP Driver look up-- This printer shouldn't be obsolete yet, and I'd rather have a paper copy of what to do (like you just posted and I copied off by hand), for when I go off to try fix other things. I can see that about 3 line long www stuff would have been something I would have *guessed* in about 2018AD !! I wonder if it's Job Security that keeps some of the Languages the computers use and coding of instructions, so unusual. You'd think, now that the **New computers are up to Billions of Bytes in Memory and 100s of Billions of Disk, that some English or other Languages would be programmable, by Now, if the manufacturers **REALLY Wanted them to be. /G.
