I think I've asked this before but I can't remember. I'm sure you all
understand. I had a couple eeg's that showed I had seizure activity in the
left temporal lobe. I went to see another Dr. who put me in the hospital for
a week long eeg. It came up with nothing. The Dr. made me feel like a freak.
He claimed it was all in my head, isn't that funny. I guess it was one way
or the other. I still take my meds and I see a different Dr. He wants me to
go for another eeg but I'm afraid it will just show nothing. I've had
seizures since I was 11 but wasn't diagnosed until 19. It is possible to
have normal eeg's with epilepsy isn't it?

Oh, sure.  I'm living proof of it.  Have had several EEGs (with different
numbers of electrodes at various times) which came up normal (of course, I
didn't have seizure activity during those EEGs).  Then they put me on the
portable monitor after I felt I was going into seizure activity and found lots
of seizures during 24 hours.

Some others here have had a longer type test where they're 'wired but
mobile' for several days, and the equipment monitors their activity during a
longer period.  I don't remember if that was Just an EEG or other things
being measured.
Your Dr. should be able to tell what this test showed, and you could ask
what they meant by 'we'll see what the next test shows'...  MY Guess
(without having an MD licence) was that there was something *visible, and if
they put you on meds. or other treatment, they might do a Followup EEG in 3?
months to compare how the Electrical activity compares Then, with what they
measured this time.
I was pretty much 'out of it' when I had mine.  I just remember the
'crazy glue' or whatever they used to put the electrodes into place... That
stuff seemed to be still coming off several days later... it wasn't Grey
Matter at least!! :-<  G.R.

(The EEG has to actually See something happening while it happens.  If
you're lucky you had some activity will you were 'wired'.   On your note
below you mention activity in the Left T.Lobe -- mine is Right T.Lobe -- so
depending on the strength of any activity, they might have seen something.
The Dr. would have to interpret what they get from the Tech. people. I hope
they find some clues.) /

Yes it is.

But I was confused by this subject line. I'd just left a poultry ng and read
it as "normal egg's"

:-)

sorry about the eggs. I thought of that after I saw it.

If memory serves me, about 70% of persons with
epilepsy have normal EEGs.

You mentioned that your neurologist diagnosed you
with absence seizures, yet your EEG showed a temporal
lobe focus??

I'm not a huge fan of EEG's.  I guess it depends on what situation
you're in and who you're seeing though.  I knew a neuro who relied too
heavily on the results of an EEG and I suffered as a result.  Instead of
listening to me and realizing that I was describing auras and complex
partials to him and the sling on my arm that I was wearing for a broken
elbow was caused by a Grand Mal he decided instead to send me for an
EEG.  He never expressed concern to me that I may be having seizures so
I went on my merry way for the next 2 weeks and I never got the results
back.  I had a grand mal while I drove home from work and totaled my
car. I never knew it was coming, I had no clue. Now that I'm educated
more about siezures I can't believe that a neuro allowed me to walk out
of his office after I explained to him, in detail, everything I was
experiencing when it's obvious to me now I was having seizures.  To this
day I hold that neuro responsible for my accident.
This is proof that relying on an EEG in every case isn't always the way
to go, I didn't even have the results back yet and the ignorance of
relying on it almost killed me.

A few years ago I spent 4 months tapering off of just 400 MG of tegretol. Over
the course of several years, I tapered down to just 400 mg and I hadn't had a
seizure for 10 years With doctor's supervision, I tapered down to 100. I took
that for a couple months and then had imaging and an EEG. The EEG was "normal".
The first normal one I ever remember having. I was stoked! I went off the last
measly 100 MG and 2 weeks later I had a grand mal.
